The Fender Can Amp is perfect for power and portability. Shaped like a paint can, it is all battery and speaker. I don't know if they still make them.

Small mains, ext 12V in, internal D cells (could put in 2 6V lantern cells I suppose), high & low input, phones out, a few twiddly things, not a great deal of power, but clean sound and gives my Symphonia a bit of a boost.

AER - Compact, great but as said Very expensive (the rechargable Battery version is about £700)

Crate Taxi 15/30 rechargeable are very good and a 5th of the price (15watt) likewise the Pignose is good but smaller speaker than the Crate (unless you pick up the Pignose 30watt which is a lot bigger and aimed at bass players but performs well for vocals and other instruments). Crate Taxi Info


Get the AER if you can justify the expense.

looking for a portable battery operated p.a. system with a decent sound for vocals.....they all seem to be geared towards guitarists........nothing against good guitarists!

One of my activities is that I work for a major regional rummage sale. We often get amps in, usually needing 110. My job in the presale is checking out electrical and electronic equipment. I have found that most of the basic amps have sufficient quality for vocals when working on the street.

Beware if using amplifiers on the street. You may be breaking the law if you don't get permission from the local authority. Some authority by laws make it illegal to broadcast amplified music without a permit (in UK).

Vox DA5 - I've tried most and this is in a league of its own.

I've adapted a small radio headset mic so that it doesn't need radio. That goes into the main socket. Volume and tone controls are fine at default.

I also use a small dynamic mic which clamps onto my stool for instruments, and that goes into the second channel. No tone control but this is not necessary at the 'reinforcement' levels I require.

Both channels are only set to double, at best, the natural sound of voice an instruments.

Set at the lowest power rating (0.5 watts), max volumes are about right. The 1.5 gives a bit more poke with no distortion, and if you need a bit more and don't mind hearing the amp over you the 5 watt setting is acceptable.

Digital effects with a tap-timer for delays could come in handy, and there are guitar effects which I don;t use but sound ok.

Digital volume controls mean you don't want to vary the sound while playing (it goes in steps) but this is otherwise the perfect small amp.

Batteries last for weeks if you only turn it on during the actual gig (1.5 hours per night?)

Choice of colours too.

Bit bigger than the Roland Microcube, but nicer tone plus the second channel, of course - which most don't have.

The crate Taxi comes in 15 and 30 watt versions but neither can hold a candle to the top of Crate's battery operated line, the Crate Limo. The Limo is 50 watts and includes onboard effects and two channels. One channel can be used for a low impedence mic while the other can handle your guitar. It has the highest wattage level of any battery powered amp currently available. That makes this amp the best option if you hope to be heard over the traffic noise on most sidewalks. It runs about $300 and slightly more at some outlets. It's a good investment for the serious player hoping to compete in environments where ambient noises can be an issue and an outlet to plug in your AC amp isn't around to use.

I second the Vox DA5 I got 2

I use it constantly, batteries last over 50 hours at low 0.5

The range of effects can be overwhelming but certainly add variety

2 in puts, one for guitar and 2nd for a head mic but this does not have tone or reverb available, but I dont need it generally

Useful for subtle sound reinforcement at an acoustic venue

I tend to mic it up into my main P A for larger/pub gigs

Fits into rucksack for transportation on back

Chris Flegg introduced me to them

Very good value at £75 they're giving them away, might even buy a 3rd
