Note regarding: "Folksongs and ballads popular in Ireland", published by Ossian; editor, Loesberg.

Indeed it can be confirmed that the page for "Eileen Aroon" supplies both the Gaelic verses (Felipa's post of 3 July 2016) and the English (Gerald Griffin, I believe). The tune is the old reliable "Robin Adair" melody, with a little rhythmic adjustment which favors the English words, I would have to say, over the Gaelic ones. (Thanks, Tattie Bogie, for post suggesting this edition)

the simpler version that I learned. And as there is mention of escaping or eloping, "oh secret love" would be okay for a translation of "a rún"

Shiúlfainn féin i gcónái leat, Eibhlín a Rún
Shiúlfainn féin i gcónái leat, Eibhlín a Rún
Shiúlfainn féin i gcónái leat, síos go Tír Amhlaoidh leat
Mar shúil go mbéinn i gcleamhnas leat, Eibhlín a Rúin

[nó]

Sheolfainn féin gamhna leat, Eibhlin a rún
Sheolfainn féin gamhna leat, Eibhlin a rún
Sheolfainn féin gamhna leat, síos go Tír Amhlaoidh leat
Mar shúil go mbéinn i gcleamhnas leat, Eibhlín a Rún

[your choice 1) I would travel together with you or 2) I would herd cattle with you
to Tirawley, for I hope to wed you, dearest Eibhlín - - I suspect sheolfainn féin gamhna leat is the older version]

An dtiocfaidh no'n bhfanfaidh tú, Eibhlín a Rún?
Tiocfaidh mé, 's ní fhanfaidh mé, Tiocfaidh mé, 's ní fhanfaidh mé
Tiocfaidh mé, 's ní fhanfaidh mé, 's éalóidh mé leat a stór

[will you come or will you stay, Eibhlín; I will come, I won't stay, I will escape/elope with you my treasure]

Céad míle fáílte rómhat, Eibhlín a Rún
Céad míle fáílte rómhat, fáílte 'gus fiche rómhat
Naoi gcéad míle fáílte rómhat, Eibhlín a Rún

[100.000 welcomes to you Eibhlín
a welcome and twenty to you, 900,000 thousand welcomes before you, Eibhlín a Rún]

[ http://www.lorcanmacmathuna.com and http://songsinirish.com/p/eleanor-a-run-lyrics.html - translation there is very erroneous ]

Mo ghrá den chéad fhéacaint thú,
Eileanóir a rún.
Is ortsa a bhímse ag smaoíneamh,
Tráth a bhím i mo shuain.
Mo ghrá den tsaol thú,
ó mo chéad searc,
is tú is deise ná ban Éireann,
'S a bhruinnillín deas óg,
is tú is deise, is milse póg,
Ach chúns a mhairfeadsa beo,
beidh gean a'm ort,
Mar is deas mar a sheolfainn
na gamhna leat,
'Eleanóir, a rún.

Bhí bua aici go mealfadh sí
na h-éanlaithe ón gcrann.
Bhí bua eile aici go dtógfadh sí
an suan-choirp ón mbás. // an corp fuair ón mbás
Bhí bua eile aici nach ndeirfeadh mé,mar
sí grá mo chroí is mo chéad searc.
A bhruinillín deas óg, is tú is deise milse póg,
Ach chúns a mhairfeadsa beo, beidh geann am ort.
Mar is deas mar a sheolfainn gamhna leat
Eileanóir a rún.

An dtiocfaidh tú nó a bhfanfaidh tú
Eileanóir a rún
Nó an aithneofá an té nach gcáinfeadh thú,
mo chuid den tsaoil is a stór.
Ó tiocfaidh mé, is ní fhanfaidh mé
Is maith d'aithneoin an té nach gcáinfeadh mé.
A bhruinillín deas óg, is tú is deise milse póg,
chúns a mhairfeadsa beo beidh geann agam ort.
Mar is deas mar a sheolfainn gamhna leat
Eileanóir a rún.

------
by the way, the Joe Einniú version has the words "na rún" and is translated as Eleanor of the secret/s
but usually we have "a rún", the "a" in this case indicating that someone is being addressed, and I wouldn't translate "rún" as secret in this case but as "dear" or "beloved" - [my] intended one
Similar to the the expression "tá rún ag.." (Tá rún agam an t-amhrán seo a fhoghlaim" = "I intend to learn this song"), though it could also imply a secret love.

Joe Heany

Keberoxu, you said you can't copy and paste, but if you want to make a clickable link you put an angle bracket (less than sign) then a href= followed by he url and a closing angle bracket (more than sign). Next you either repeat the url or write some words for your "blue clicky" followed by a/ enclosed in angle brackets.

You may enjoy the singing of Róisín Elsafty

If you are looking for "Eileanóir a rún," there is now a biography available of Joe Heaney. It contains both the melody, the Gaelic lyrics, and a translation.

"Bright Star of the West: Joe Heaney, Irish song man"
authors: Sean Williams, Lillis Ó Laoire
publication: New York: Oxford University Press, 2011
ISBN: 978-0-19-532118-0

From pages 120 to 124, you can find the lyrics, and in "Figure 5.2" is music notation for the sean-nós melody.

Try Eileen Aroon, or in Gaelic, Eibhlin a Run.
Both sets of words and the tune in "Folksongs and ballads popular in Ireland" Volume 1 (Ossian Publications - ISBN 0 946005 00 1) If you buy the book you get another 49 songs! You might find it in the DT wwith the correct spelling too.

I was wondering if anyone had lyrics for the sean nos song Ailinor (Eilinor?) a run. I have the tune and I'm not sure about the spelling, but I lost my lyric sheet. Any help would be great!
