OK, I know it's sad but I was like a little kid on Christmas morning today. 8:30 am door bell rings - It's the postman with my special edition Return of the King extended DVD!

Can hardly wait till I get cahnce to see it. May have a Lord of the Ringsathon with all the extended versions this weekend:-)

Anyone seen it yet?

I've had the chance to DL some of the added bits for a while now, but I've chose to pass, and wait to lay hands on the DVD... And then sit and watch all 3, back to back, to back...

After that, it'll be well and truely over... and I donno what I'm gonna do with myself... Been following the development of the LOTR movies for so long now, I feel a little... umm... post-partum...

Already ordered a copy as present for my son -- of course, he and I will watch together (unless he cheats and starts while I'm at work.)

Clinton's right -- it'll feel very strange for this long process to finally be all over. When we watched the third and final theatrical release, we all knew that there would still be *much* more to come -- but now, this time, it's all finally coming to an end.

How can I say more.

Finished training 15 mins early so I could get home and settled to start watching at 8. Actualy got started about 1/4 past. 4 hours later I was still sat open mouthed. The big session is yet to come. May keep it as a treat over the hols. Remember there is now the 4 x DVD 'making of', the Gollum special, the Orchestral one that comes out with this one etc etc. Probably talking 20 hours or so?

The extended edition came out here in the UK today. I am one of the lucky ones who has had all 3 special editions as well with the free gift extras. Argonath bookends with FOTR, Gollum model with TTT and a Miras Tirith model come trinket box with ROTK. Always a sucker for marketing:-) Will probably buy the full boxed set with every conceivable extra, that I probably already have, when that comes out as well!

Get it now!

When you do, I'll buy the Argonath bookends off ya...   They're the only 'special' that I've been interested in... I thought the Gollum and the Minas Tirith modle looked goofy...

There's no solid evidence at this point that there ever will be a 'big box'... and even if there is, I'll bet you your book ends, that they won't be included... they were an 'exclusive to the first Ext. Ed. run' item...

I pounced. Watched the first disc tonight. Like the added scenes. Especially the confrontation of Saruman and the extra stuff with the ghosts.

I have seen a boxed DVD set of all 3 films and the special version of Return of the King. Is there extra footage of the film itself on this extended version - that is not on the boxed set. They both seem to refer to an extra 48 mins for ROTK?

There is always the 'Return of the Kong' to look forward to........

Yep, pre-ordered off Amazon. Arrived last Friday, so watched it over the weekend. Utterly brilliant. I really wish they'd released the extended versions at cinemas, instead of the emasculated versions they came up with. The extended versions fill in so much more of the characterisation and plot which was sadly missing in the cinema versions.

Ah well. Just hope our local cinema does a back-to-back screening of all 3 extended editions. They did it for TTT, so I'm just hoping they'll do it for the whole thing. Unfortunately all the DVD compression artifacts are going to be visible on a cinema-size screen, but I guess I can put up with that.

Shambles, the boxed DVD set doesn't have any extra footage in it apart from what's already in the extended versions. It's just all three extended versions in one box. I guess it might have some extra "making-of" stuff, but I doubt it.

Clinton, there's Argonath bookends on Ebay. A bit pricey though.

On the subject of extras, has anyone seen that bit on the RotK extras about Cameron Duncan? That kid showed some serious talent - such a waste for someone like that to go so young. And another tearjerker was the bit about the horses (another reason to love Viggo Mortensen).

They threw a lot of little comedic bits for Gimli into all the movies for entertainment value (and because JRD could handle them). Some of the lines were a bit cheesy (and potentially dated, like the "Nobody throws a Dwarf!" line) but still, a very different, wecome picture of the dwarf from the books for sure. More 3D and engaging than Tolkien's grumpy standoffish icons.

Has anyone seen the new 50th Anniversary edition of the book that just came out? All one volume - leather bound - lots of bells and whistles. With an entire book that's never been printed until now that has distressed pages - burn marks and stains by JRR himself. It retails for 100.00 American but I think you can get it on sale for around 75.00. I've been told I'm getting it for Christmas.

"Our" copy arrived from Amazon yesterday. Because it's technically a Christmas present for son Mike (but not a surprise -- he filled out the order form himself), Momma sez "Do Not Open Until Xmas." So far, it's still shrink-wrapped.

I don't wanna wait, and neither does the intended recipient, but we *may* be good boys and comply with The Boss's command to cool our heels. Christmas is so low-key with the kids grown up --it's probably worthwhile to observe a few niceties.
