Also, thanks so much for, among other things, the Moonlight Sonata, which, when I play it, has the effect of stopping one of our cats from attacking legs of people and chairs--she jumps up on top of the piano to listen to it. This is definitely a huge step forward in the interests of domestic harmony (though it would be a lot better if Lucy - -the cat in question---also tolerated soprano voices better than she does.)

Danke, danke.

Ich haben ein helluva hangover, drinking one full glass of brandy for every year I've been dead. And hanging out with rowdies like Johnny Bach, Wolfy Mozart, Pops Haydn, and Johnny's son P doesn't make it easier. Ach, mein head!

And you should have heard what Felix and Gustav and John-Boy Brahms did to those polyphonic motets, you would have split a gut laughing! Only them guys would have re-wrote them in 9/8 and transposed them to C minor! What a bunch of chuckleheads!

Anyway, I'm glad you all still like my music. I really knocked my brains out on that Schiller thing.

It's hard to believe that I'm 234 years old.

Happy to be of service.

I put it below the line because it's not folk or blues. From prior experience, I've found Beethoven's Birthday threads to be unpredictable beasties.   I think this is the first Beethoven's birthday thread I've started since the BS section was created, and I had some difficulty deciding where to put it.

Also, how can this, of all subjects, be non-music?

Thanks so much, Carol. That link is great. Hard to believe it's not just a few miles away. Streaming is definitely one of the best things about the Net.

Mahler? He's the 7th of July, 1860. You're way early. He was born in Kaliste, which, in Greek at least, means 'beautiful'.

Let Ludwig have his day. Or the nadsats might get you.

When I was in college we celebrated one year with a cake in the shape of a piano, in the Student Union. People thought we were nuts. They were right.

Oh, Ludwig, it's your birthday
It's your birthday, Luddy dear
Only one birthday per person
And yours has come around this year.
There is nothing that can stop it
No matter what or how you try,
It's your birthday, Lud Beethoven --
We hate to see a grown man cry.

          - to some of the Choral Part of you-know-who's 9th Symphony

My brother's birthday occurs mid-December. When he was very young, I used to tell him that the whole world was getting ready to celebrate his birthday. When he was older and (a little) wiser, we used to drive to Waltham and visit the classical radio station WCRB, where they had a birthday cake for Ol' Ludwig. Good cake, free bumper stickers with corny classical puns, such as "You Can't Go Farandole", "Bach Is Beautiful", "I'm Yours Faure Song", "Oh Milhaud My", and my personal favorite: "Eschew Obfuscation". And a tour of the radio station.

So Up With Ludwig Von!

(robomatic what is trying to make Linux work but these fonts look muy strangito.............)

Ludwig, your music is still with us. And you are a household name. Your mom would be proud. You have shown people what courage in the face of adversity is; you defied the fates and didn't quit when your hearing went. Today, you are a giant amongst giants. Tomorrow will be your birthday. It must be humbling to be immortal.

Some of your tunes have become hits on the radio, and your name was put in great company by Chuck Berry. He's a rock guys you would have liked. Poor beginnings though he had, he knew about you. The world knows about you, Ludwig, and its a better place for having had you stop here--and stay.
