I was asked last night who wrote the song ,sung by Norma Waterson which includes the line

'no sweet man is worth the salt of my tears'

and its not the Dolly Parton one

The enquiry came from a lady with no accesss to this.

she thought it could possibly be Bessie Smith, - no dumbo - not the one that makes Yorkshire puddings.

Over to the catters.

"Cats and Jammers" does a good performance of this song, also.

The Paul Whiteman recording had terrific vocal by The Rhythm Boys (Bing Crosby, Harry Barris, Al Rinka). Has it ever been reissued? Should be.

THERE AIN'T NO SWEET MAN THAT'S WORTH THE SALT OF MY TEARS
(Fred Fisher)
Shakin' like a leaf on a tree,
That's coming loose from the stem;
Shakin' like a leaf on a tree,
Because I'm coming loose from my man!

I'm like a weeping willow,
Weeping on my pillow,
For years and years,
There ain't no sweet man (that's) worth the salt of my tears
Ba-ba-da-doo, wah da da da do, wah da da ba do, wha da-oh!

Down and down he dragged me,
Like a fiend he nagged me,
For years and years,
There ain't no sweet man (that's) worth the salt of my tears
Ba da da da da da do!

Although I may be blue,
Still, I'm true.
I must tell him good-bye!
Rather than have that man,
Gonna (see me) lay me down and (just) die!
Da-oh!

Broken-hearted sisters,
Aggravating misters, lend me your ears!
There ain't no sweet man (that's) worth the salt of my tears
Ba-ba-da-doo, wah da da da do, wah da da ba do, wha da-oh!
Ba-da wah da-oh! Shh!

The Rhythm Boys recording is on a CD called Bix n' Bing ASV Living Era AJA2005. The CD has 20 tracks recorded by Crosby with the Whiteman Band from 1927 to 1929. Good stuff if, like me, you prefer living in the past!

The Red Hot Jazz Archive has the downloadable recording:

THERE AIN'T NO SWEET MAN THAT'S WORTH THE SALT OF MY TEARS
Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra, featuring Bix Beiderbecke, Bing Crosby and The Rhythm Boys, recorded in 1928.

Thank you Dave for sticking the blue clicky thingy on there and for finding this link. I LOVED this song from the minute I first heard it and knew that one day I'd find a band to play if for me!!

I was lucky enough to chat to Norma Waterson last summer about the song and how much we both liked it!
Did I name drop then? Sorry!

My band is Dr Bob Stamp and Keith Haynes for this particular version. We'll play it live with our double bassist Adrian Thompson for a few bob and some beer!!

Thanks for looking do leave us a message if you like it!
