Sorry to make light, Mr Happy.

My doctor told me to stop everything. I quit some stuff and not other stuff. As of this morning I feel OK, but the day is young.

A friend of mine went to a Well Man clinic, whihc found he had the very early stages of prostate cancer, which was succesfully treated and he is now fine. If he hadn't gone to the clinic it may have been well advanced before they found out about it

I make sure I get a yearly check, after all if something is wrong, it is best to find out early.
Best wishes, Mike.

I had a well man check, they found I'd got everything but health.

Seriously though, it can pick up things like diabetes, blood pressure etc.

Do be careful not to read too many medical books though.....I read through quite a thick one and realised that the only thing I hadn't got was Hypochondria!

my grandad went blind from cider/diabetes

..and my dad went impotent from the side effects of medication
used to control his blood pressure and diabetes..

For you guys over fifty, get yer prostate checked. A combo of the rubber glove and PSA test is best. And that should be done EVERY year. Prostate cancer is a killer.

Update of consequences of WMC:

Referred to dietician.

Advised 'u r o'bese' so got to lose weight [4 stone] via diet.

High cholesterol= diet.

Stop smoking- referred to No soking counsellor- will see next Friday.

Anyway I've started the diet & its not too painful.

Consists having baked beans on toast for brekky instead of bacon & egg sandwich.

Oily fish butties with olive spread for lunch instead of pie &chips.

breakfast cereals for snacks instead of crisps.

evening meal lean meat/fish + lots fresh veg or pasta.

instead of fattie foods- no burgers, sausages, roasters etc.

+ lots fresh fri3ut & yoghurt.

I lost something over 40 pounds a couple of years ago. don't know for sure how much over because i'd quit weighing myself out of terror, but likely 10 pounds over, anyway.

I didn't change what I ate much, just ate less of about the same stuff. I'd tried it before, but this time I concentrated on eating less instead of losing weight. Doesn't exactly make sense, but it seemed to work.

See how much you can cut down without feeling empty. Wait a bit before you have second helpings; promise yourself you can have a snack in half an hour if you need it. Keep a hard candy in your mouth to fool your stomach; it'll think you're eating. Don't weigh yourself until your pants start falling down. Cunning and trickery at all times.

Anyone else doing diet?

If this is a slimming/healthy-eating diet then yes, all the time.

The only way to stay a size 12!

That's not to say food can't be enjoyed and that you must feel hungry all the time but the amounts and types of food that could be eaten without any problems in the more active 20s or 30s now go straight to the hips (never the tits - why is that??).

I think, as we age, we develop a fast-lane channel that bypasses the stomach, gut, etc and deposits fat directly in all those areas that show up in tight fitting skirts and pants.

Bad news is that you really do have to think twice or three times before consuming that chocolate bar or burger.

Good news is that after a while you won't want to eat them anyway because after a while on low fat diets the 'taste' for them goes away.

Happy eating, Mr Happy!!

Mr. Happy, as each person is unique, finding the diet that works for your health at your stage in life may take some fine tuning. You may have to try different strategies before you find the one that works for you. Cutting down on fat may not work. You may just need to be eating the right kinds of fat and cutting out sugar instead. When I went through menopause, everything about my body seemed to change. In the past, I was either normal weight or too thin for most of my life. Menopause changed that. Men's bodies have changes too, just not as obvious as it is for us women. I have been trying for five years to find the right type of diet to make me healthy. In the process, I finally have come to treatment for insulin resistance. If your cells develop insulin resistance, (you don't have the insulin receoptors that you had when younger) then the glucose in your food will become fat rather than fuel. I exercise and eat a diet rich in green leafy vegetables. I eat only lean meats (turkey and chicken) and avoid processed carbohydrate foods like soda, cookies, etc. It is still a struggle. I take supplements that are supposed to help change the insulin resistance to increase the number of insulin receptors.

Just cutting down on calories may cause more harm than good, as fasting or crash dieting can make your ability to burn fuel less efficient. I hope your doctor can help you find what your particular body needs to eat and to avoid. You need good fats. Don't cut all fats out of your diet.
