For Mrrzy, whose need is especially urgent:
here is That Song again, with the link
to the video of the live performance.

By the way, Charley Noble, the words on the page would indeed fall flat by themselves. Donald Swann's Gilbert-and-Sullivan patter-song-paced musical setting keeps the words moving at a very brisk pace indeed. The sight of the words in print gives far greater pleasure to those of us who have the sound of the singing in our ear, and who can hear the rhythms and the sheer frantic speed of the musical tempo.

Leon Berger has posted a YouTube video of a live performance, black-and-white film, of Flanders and Swann singing The Wompom (not the Atomic Fish-and-Chips version). The duo pretend to be broadcasting a commercial advertisement from a gen-u-ine WomPom Factory, complete with non-verbal mechanical assembly-line noises vocalized by both men in between verses. The audience, as one can hear, finds it all hilarious.

"Hat-Trick," the four-compact-disc set of recordings of Flanders and Swann issued in the past ten years, includes a re-visit of The Wompom. The music is identical; this is just a revised set of lyrics. This version was not taped before an audience in concert; it is a private recording by the duo, and appears on the fourth CD called "Hats Off."
The title of this version is:

INTERIM REPORT

copyright, The Estate of Michael Flanders, who is the author

You can do such a lot with the Atom,
You can use every part of it too,
For work or for pleasure
It's a triumph, it's a treasure
Oh there's nothing that an Atom cannot do!

We have recently been to Geneva
Where we found it was perfectly true
At our meetings in Convention
Not a speaker failed to mention
There is nothing that an Atom cannot do!

Now the power you release from the Atom
Can perform any task that you like
And the joy of automation
When applied throughout the nation
Is that everyone can always be on strike.

Hail to thee blithe Atom!
Chain reactor Plant!
All providing Atom!
Universal Aunt!

We should all raise our hats to the Atom
Though it's small, it is game, through and through;
For ignoring the abuses
When it comes to peaceful uses
There is nothing that an Atom cannot do!
Nothing that an Atom cannot do!
Nothing that an Atom cannot do!

Now the breeding of fuel from the Atom
Is of utmost importance to man
And the interesting fact A-
-bout a nuclear reactor
Is you finish up with more than you began.

Let us take some Plutonium Atoms,
Let us freeze them and then make them hot;

FLANDERS: Now we add some heavy water --
SWANN:                   What will happen?
FLANDERS:                Something oughter --
BOTH, to resume:
But we none of us are very certain what!

Gaudeamus Atom!
Ave Gamma Ray!
Vademecum Atom!
Atque vale me!

All the poisonous waste from the Atom
Can be loaded on barges and chips
We can dump it in the ocean,
With the minimum commotion
Though, perhaps, you'll get Atomic Fission Chips.

You can do such a lot with the Atom,
You can use every part of it too,
For work or for pleasure,
It's a triumph, it's a treasure,
Oh, there's nothing that an Atom cannot do!

To the problems of life as we live it
The Atom's the key, and it fits!
We shall learn how to mutate a
Better rabbit or potato --
If we've not already blown the world to bits!

Pro - ton! Neu - tron !
Let your voices ring!
Neut - tron! Pro - ton!
Evermore we sing!

To record what is what in the Atom
Needs a book twice as big as Who's Who;
You can shoot it into space or
You can use it as a tracer
You can shape it, you can square it,
You can drape it, you can wear it,
You can ice it, you can dice it,
You can pare it, you can slice it --
Oh there's nothing that an Atom cannot do!
Nothing that an Atom cannot do!
Nothing that an Atom cannot do!

Anyone know what the tune is? I've heard it in an older context.

The idea of the song derives from Rabelais - the chapter in Pantagruel describing the wondrous plant "Pantagruelion" (which seems to be cannabis).

By the way, and at risk of setting off the pedant alarm, the spelling on the CD is WOMPOM.

Not that any one would really care, except perhaps another wompom...

There is a 3 CD boxed set of Flanders & Swann released by EMI some years ago as The Complete Flanders & Swann. May still be available. I found my set in a charity shop recently for $5. (Now I can eBay the vinyl!)
I'm sure many readers will be familiar with the Hippopotamus Song(Mud, Mud, Glorious Mud), for which they were also responsible.
And I still get a laugh from The Gas-Man Cometh, that great ode in praise of the British worker.

Hi leeneia, yes, definitely Tulle! English humour hadn't descended to it's present level in the days of F & S. They did have a comment on that subject though, Bernard Levin had just used 'the' four letter word on live television for the first time. F & S produced a song which goes:-

Mum's gone out , let's say rude words,
Pee, po, belly, bum, drawers!

Thanks for posting that.

Just a little thought here. "tool" was probably "tulle," the fine fabric that bridal veils are made of.

There's a level of humor in this song that just doesn't seem to translate across the Great Waters. Maybe I just haven't had enough coffee.

Hi all
Yes indeedy THE WOMPOM was written and performed by that august duo, Flanders and Swann, and I have great pleasure in providing the lyrics below. They made a speciality of this type of song, so, if this appeals it would be worth looking for other material by them.
PS: apologies for one missing word at the end.
Regards, John

THE WOMPOM
As recorded by Flanders and Swann.

You can do such a lot with a wompom.
You can use every part of it, too.
For work or for pleasure, it's a triumph; it's a treasure.
Oh, there's nothing that a wompom cannot do.

Now the thread from the coat of a wompom
Has the warmth and the resilience of wool.
You need never wash or brush it; it's impossible to crush it,
And it shimmers like the finest sort of tool.

So our clothes are all made from the wompom:
Modern gowns, sportswear, lingerie.
They are waterproof and plastic. Where it's needed, they're elastic,
And they emphasise the figure, as you see.

Hail to thee, blithe wompom,
Hail to thee, O plant!
All-providing wompom,
Universal Aunt.

You can shave with the rind of a wompom,
And it acts as a soapless shampoo,
And the root in little doses keeps you free from halitosis.
Oh, there's nothing that a wompom cannot do.
Nothing that a wompom cannot do.
Nothing that a wompom cannot do.

Now the thick inner shell of a wompom
You can mould with a finger and thumb.
Though soft when you began it, it will set as hard as granite
And it's quite as light as aluminium.

So we make what we like from the wompom,
And that proves very useful indeed.
From streets full of houses, to the buttons on your trousers,
With the wompom, you have everything you need.

Gaudeamus wompom!
Gladly we salute
Vademecum wompom!
Philanthropic fruit.

Oh, the thin outer leaf of a wompom
Makes the finest Havana cigar.
And its bottom simply bristles with unusual looking thistles,
But we haven't yet discovered what they are.

You can do such a lot with a wompom.
You can use every part of it, too.
For work or for pleasure, it's a triumph; it's a treasure.
Oh, there's nothing that a wompom cannot do.

Oh, the flesh in the heart of a wompom
Has the flavour of porterhouse steak;
And the juice is a liquor that will get you higher quicker
And you're still lit up next morning when you wake.

Wompom, wompom!
Let your voices ring.
Wompom, wompom!
Ever more we sing.

To record what is what in a wompom
Needs a book twice as big as Who's Who.
I could tell you more and more about this fascinating flora.
You can shape it; you can square it.
You can drape it; you can wear it.
You can ice it; you can dice it.
You can pare it; you can slice it.
Oh, there's nothing that a wompom cannot do.
Nothing that a wompom cannot do.
Nothing that a wompom cannot do.

Flanders and Swann did indeed do a song called the Wompon - a quick search reveals that it is included as an encore on their best of album, A Transport of Delight

From your brief description of the duo I would suggest they are likely to be Flanders & Swann. I don't know if they did The Wampum Song, I believe they wrote their own material

Hi, I heard this on a radio station that I got onto by mistake, so I can't check their website to see who these guys are, but they are a riot. They are kind a cross between Tom Lehrer and Gilbert & Sullivan. Can't recall any of the words right now, but the Wampum song was a howl. Anybody?
