Subject: BS: I'm bored From: John MacKenzie Date: 28 May 05 - 01:34 PM It's Saturday which is always a quiet day on Mudcat because all you youngsters got Saturday things to do. You see when you don't have a regular job you can go to the supermarket on a Tuesday, you can go argue with your bank about the shit service they provide at extortionate cost any day of the week, in fact you can do all the things you used to struggle to do on a weekend thus leaving said weekend free to be bored stiff in. That's because people take their kids out, visit their kids, visit their grandkids and stuff at weekends 'cos that's the only time the poor wage slaves have free. Me I live in the highlands of Scotland where there isn't too much to do anyway, my son, his partner and my one and only grandson Michael are way across the pond on Hanover NH so a weekend visit isn't on the cards. Yes it's lovely up here and the days are long, by next month the nights will be pale blue and never really dark, but what the f**k is the use of longer days when it pisses down of rain for 24 hours at a stretch. I got up this morning and turned the central heating on, 10 days ago we had 1" of ice in the birds drinking dish and I've lost so many plants in my garden that I may make the local garden centre rich replacing them! What the f**k has happened to spring? As for summer, well forget it I want to pack it all in and go tramping around warmer climes in my RV/Motorhome because I've just about had it with this crap weather we seem to get more and more regularly. Anyway like I said before I'm fucking bored!!! Just thought I'd share that with y'all friends. Giok |

Subject: RE: BS: I'm bored From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 28 May 05 - 02:53 PM Hey, I'm retired John, but Saturdays aren't boring. Yeah, I can go to the bank and to stores during the week that are jammed over the weekend. And, we don't go out to eat on the weekends for the same reason. I think the catch is that when you're living alone, it does seem like everybody else but you has plans for the weekend. I've lived alone for long stretches of my adult life, and I remember those times. Today, my wife an I are packing to go on a trip, and two of our sons are here putting a roof on a storage shed. I spent most of the morning putting together a family photo journal with related songs for my Mother's 98th birthday, and now it's time to clean the fish aquarium. Tomorrow night, my group will be performing, so that'll be a lot of fun. Weekends are a crazy mix of mowing the lawn, weeding, painting, music, watching old movies, spending time in here... not all equally enjoyable, but plenty to do. And then, there's the joy of having a loving wife to share things with. I've done it all three ways... living alone, being married to someone who made me yearn for the days that I lived alone, getting divorced and living alone again and then re-marrying and discovering how great life can be. All beats not living. Jerry |

Subject: RE: BS: I'm bored From: Azizi Date: 28 May 05 - 03:02 PM Amen, and I'm glad your life is good now Jerry. Yet for some reason, I don't think that what you said will make Griok feel better. As for me, I'm not bored, but I want to be happier. But I figure there are times we just have to tread water till better times come. Azizi |

Subject: RE: BS: I'm bored From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 28 May 05 - 03:23 PM You're right, Azizi: It's hard to say anything that will help someone when they're bored, or feeling a little down in the dumps. I've been there, as we all have, and it is just something you have to muddle your way through. I'm surprised somebody hasn't written a book How To Overcome Boredom For Dummies. :-) Like me. Jerry |

Subject: RE: BS: I'm bored From: My guru always said Date: 28 May 05 - 03:32 PM Hey 'Giok', get in that Motorhome & come down to Surrey for a visit! It's all good fun & hot too! Got sunburned over the past 2 days from some intensive gardening, putting a new border in. All dug now, just gotta decide how these puple & white plants are going to go in. Taking an enforced break from festivals as the caravan windows are out & waiting for replacement to be made. No ice on my bird-baths, had a 'heated bird-bath' installed for the cold times, but haven't switched it on for about 4 months now. Been watching the wild-life in my garden paradise, all the bird-babies are causing chaos for their parents. I've got great-spotted woodpeckers coming every day for fat-cakes, they're competing with all the squirrels (grey unfortunately). The fox has lost his winter fat but still comes for supper & has developed a taste for peanuts.... |

Subject: RE: BS: I'm bored From: GUEST Date: 28 May 05 - 03:50 PM Bit of spare time? Hey giok the National Trust needs you!!!!!!!!!! There are hundreds of jobs all over the UK that need people just like you. How about sorting out the rose garden in Morden Hall? Or cataloguing paintings in stately homes? Tidying up meadow pathways and woodland walks? Mending fences to protect wildlife? They would love to hear from you, whether you have an hour to spare or fancy a working holiday. This is the year of the volunteer. |

Subject: RE: BS: I'm bored From: gnu Date: 28 May 05 - 04:08 PM Yeeess b'y! I knows da feelin. The highlight of my day, just past, was reading the weekly grocery ads in the newspaper. Tomorrow, I'll have something exciting to do - go to a few grocery stores and fill up on the bargains, like the rest of the sheep. Though it doesn't matter much because cooking for one isn't all that costly, or much fun. I've got one and a half rugby games on tape and it's almost 5PM. So, if I can kill an hour here at the Café, I've got 3.5 hours of beer and rugby to take me to passing out on the couch. Sleep until dawn. Then, it's just five hours until I get to go for groceries. A real party weekend. Jerry... good on ya for being so lucky as to find a good woman. I just hope you didn't get the last one. And I'm not talking about a bargain so don't all you Mudcatettes get on my case. Ah, screw it. I'm cracking one as I write. A toast to ye, Johnny b'y! Jump in the RV and 'ave a wee toddy. It'll make ye feel like yer outta the four walls. |

Subject: RE: BS: I'm bored From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 28 May 05 - 04:17 PM Hey, gnu: As they say, "good things come to those who wait." I met Ruth when I had finally pretty much given up and stopped looking. When I first started seeing Ruth, it was to visit the sick and shut-ins together. Our first "date" we went to the hospital to visit patients neither of us even knew. When my friend Joe heard that we'd started seeing each other he made a classic statement about a classic woman: "She's a beautiful woman, and she's good-looking, too." That says it all.. Smiling Jerry |

Subject: RE: BS: I'm bored From: Azizi Date: 28 May 05 - 04:20 PM Gnu, I guess you know that your last sentence could have more than one meaning. I suppose that you meant it one way, but reading it another way made me smile. Thanks for that. Azizi |

Subject: RE: BS: I'm bored From: John MacKenzie Date: 28 May 05 - 04:26 PM Before you all start feeling too sorry for me I do have a partner so I'm not totally bereft of company, being bored is not a result of being alone, in my case it's due to being unable to do things I want to like go fishing or work in the garden. Anyway even if I didn't have 'the staff' Scotland is full of sheep { some of them very pretty } so no man need feel lonely in that respect. Giok. |

Subject: RE: BS: I'm bored From: gnu Date: 28 May 05 - 04:30 PM Ahhh, Jerry, ain't love grand? That's nice... a tear in my eye. Good on ya!!! And on her, too. Me, I not only stopped looking about a dozen years ago, I started AVOIDING about then. Pretty hard to 'find' someone that way I suppose. Not that I am complaining or bragging. I just find it much easier to not get involved, even though it's lonely. I just developed the approach, after about fourteen years in one of those loveless relationships you wrote of above, that it's better to be lonely alone than lonely with someone. Time fer anudder, Giok? My round. |

Subject: RE: BS: I'm bored From: gnu Date: 28 May 05 - 04:50 PM Cross pisssed there. Perhaps, nay, I did, speak too much, upon interpreting too much. You gonna melt in the rain? Stop yer weenin, git yer woolies on an' go troutin man! Shite! |

Subject: RE: BS: I'm bored From: Azizi Date: 28 May 05 - 06:18 PM Gnu, Well maybe not the last sentence by itself...more like the last paragraph. Maybe it's where the moon is {that's an astrology reference by the way}. Or maybe it has to do with me reading that current thread about English words having more than one meaning...plus reading the the thread on that roly poly dessert whatchamacallit. You know what I mean???? And with regards to your conclusion that "it's better to be lonely alone than lonely with someone"- True. But-speaking as a sister here [with no racial puns intended]-I hope that your spirit remains at least slightly open to the possibility that you might meet a kindred soul who can share your life. Sometimes it happens when you least expect it. Ask Jerry. |

Subject: RE: BS: I'm bored From: GUEST, puss Date: 28 May 05 - 07:08 PM I think gnu has the right approach. There's nothing more off-putting than someone who is obviously desperately searching for that special 'someone'. If you come across as emotionally self-sufficiant, and interested in whatever it is you are doing, you will find people eager to share it with you. You may then have to discourage some of them, but there is always the possibility that 'someone' may come along that you don't want to discourage. |

Subject: RE: BS: I'm bored From: gnu Date: 28 May 05 - 07:24 PM Azizi... nope. Went back and read it a bunch of times. Still don't get anything other than having a beer/drink. Unless you mean something sexual, which could be said about any sentence ever written. How about this: When I think of my ex, I get really excited and my blood pressure rises and it's all I can do to contain myself. As for open, sure, but the price of admission is one hell of a lot higher these days. Haven't had a sale in nearly ten years! |
|
Subject: RE: BS: I'm bored From: gnu Date: 28 May 05 - 07:38 PM Hmmm, puss. No, I think it's more simple that that in my case. I just don't want to be bothered any more. I was just unlucky, I guess. And now, it's too late to have children, so why bother with flirting with lady luck again? She's been a bitch so far. Why take another chance? |

Subject: RE: BS: I'm bored From: gnu Date: 28 May 05 - 07:57 PM Okay then... enough of that. Giok. What are ye up to now lad? Here! Try running in between the raindrops so you don't get wet. Your round... and hurry up about it. I'm gettin sober between drinks waitin on ye ta put in. And spillin me lunch while I'm at it, like a wee girl. Perhaps it's time ta ween and sober? Nah!!! Aye, ye'r gone ta bed aren't ye? I see by the clock on the wall it's nearly me bedtime and ye are past me by four hours. Screw it. I'll have a round by meself. Thank me very much. Oh, yer very welcome. gnight Johnboy |

Subject: RE: BS: I'm bored From: freda underhill Date: 29 May 05 - 01:11 AM Giok, I'm afraid its our fault here down under. we have had an extended summer which just went on and on and on, and which we greatly enjoyed. 8 months of sunshine is enough to make anyone smile! but, you know, you are entitled to be bored, and to be bored truly and in the most utterly boring way. Why should you move away from your family to a shit hole of a city to get enjoyment which is too expensive to get to? can you do voluntary work in the back of beyond? you may get the delightful company of Hyacinth Bucket if you choose to, and who wants that? why should you take up crochet or tap dancing if you don't bloody well feel like it? and why should you look at that endless grey sky and bleak view out the window, and not feel pretty bleak inside too. Now that winter has finally moved in here, I'm with you. freda |

Subject: RE: BS: I'm bored From: Azizi Date: 29 May 05 - 06:56 AM John, I wish you and all others an unboring, joyful day. **** Gnu {and others}, For what it's worth, take it or leave it, here's a saying that I say to myself since if I said it out loud to myself people would think I'm crazy: "The good I seek is seeking me". And if you refuse to seek good, in my neighbood we'd say you're "blocking your blessings." Also, there's an old African saying called "Sankofa" that says "It is never too late to go back and claim it {what you have lost in the past}." "Sankofa" comes from the Asante {Ashanti} people of Ghana and the Gyaman people of Côte d'Ivoire [The Ivory Coast], West Africa. The Asante and Gyaman people are also known for other adinkra proverbs that are represented by pictorial symbols. Adinkra symbols were stamped onto 'kente' cloth-a type of material which at one time was only worn by the royalty, and later was worn only during funerals and other special occasions. Since the late 1980s many African Americans have embraced the numerous colors and patterns of kente cloth {especially the orange & yellow colored kente cloth} and the adinkra symbols & proverbs {especially the Sankofa word, saying, and its pictorial representation of a bird with its neck facing backward} as symbols of our heritage. However,IMO, anyone can appreciate kente cloth and everyone can find some solace and wisdom in adinkra symbols. Click HERE for more information on adinkra symbols. Peace! Azizi Powell |
