And then when the trolls attack, they squeal like a stuck pig. Jack does it, CarolC does it, Ron Davies does it, and so does dianavan - and many others. I have only ever requested TWO attacks against me be deleted (in five years of posting to the Mudcat). I did so after Joe announced his policy of 100 percent review of "Martin Gibson's" posts. On both occassions, I did it for one reason, and one reason only... to find out if the 100 percent review was going to appy to "Martin's" personal attacks against me. Joe Offer, in posting this accusation to the open forum has breached an important bit of Mudcat ettiquette, because in doing so, he has discussed the contents of Personal Messages and private e-mails in the open forum (and he gave the names of the people whose messages he was discussing). The only way to refute his accusations is to post the exact contents of one of the PMs I sent him in order to request deletion of a personal attack. This is the kind of language Joe has described as "squeal(ing) like a stuck pig"... If this past months/year was a ruse, it was a joke that had a life of it's own. The stridency with which some of the insults came through were such that whether real or play-acting, the voice behind them was unhealthy. The schoolyard bully in hyperspace. I once asked MG why he bothered, and he responded back (PM) that it was all a joke, and a way to stir people up. But who would have the time or interest in such a sustained experiment? An author I know of once created a persona on a discussion list and kept it going for several months before confessing who he was. There was some alter ego stuff going on, but there was also a chance to offensively yank people's chains without accountablity. He could write it and think "this isn't really me," when of course it was exactly he who was writing that stuff. The alter ego has been quoted in essays since then (this is all American Indian literature stuff, so I won't go into more details or I'd bore the thread stiff). Those posts still come back to bite the original author on occasion, but in the way of computers, unless they were printed out at the time they're probably gone by now. We can keep our eyes open for a thesis or dissertation by some warped academic in which he describes and analyzes anti-social behavior as forced upon an open society. If it was an experiment, it was in extremely poor taste, and I hope his committee pans the work. Beyond the above conjecture, I'm glad to see that the individual who called himself "Martin Gibson" is gone, because he was extremely insulting to several of my loved ones. I don't, however, trust that he will stay away. If/when he returns, the form he chooses may be different, but those leopard's spots don't change. SRS |

(Akenaton) So early in this thread a good prediction hid in a question. One cannot but hope this person is gone for good. I cannot understand how anyone can lament his goodbye. Even if I were a conservative as mg claimed to be I would have been embarrassed by the style. I would have blocked his access long ago. On the other hand, I've never understood the 'take-a-stand' position when it became repetitive. Once or twice it is understandable, but quickly mg has made clear he would never react in a decent way to that approach. Good Mudcatters have lowered sometimes their style and argumentation for a fight with mg. Even if you can win a fight of words with mg in his style would you really want to win such a fight? The let's-play-with-Martin game has become boring (perhaps even for him). There has been more than one political thread in which mg has been 'invoked' ("soon, Martin will come and tell us..."etc.) before even showing up for the first time. There have been threads in which mg only needed to post a link with a few harmless words and soon some reacted to this link as if mg had already insulted them in that very thread. A reactive anticipation of future abuse which of course invariably did come. Wolfgang |

He still needs to get a few bugs out, but right now, he is catching up on some well-deserved sleep. Give the guy a break! I think we are very lucky to have got this much back, considering the problem. I'm happy anyway. Whatever we missed on this thread, maybe it's just as well, and if anything is important enough, people can always post again. Personally, I think the break could be a blessing in disguise, as far as this thread is concerned. It might have given some people a chance to cool down a bit. One can always hope anyway. Jenny |
