Subject: what is 'concert sound'?? From: GUEST,chantal Date: 18 Jun 05 - 01:38 PM Reading a posting on this board, I saw a CD described as being, not mono or stereo, but in "concert sound." Anyone know what this is?? |

Subject: RE: what is 'concert sound'?? From: michaelr Date: 18 Jun 05 - 04:39 PM Might mean 5.1 surround sound, perhaps? |

Subject: RE: what is 'concert sound'?? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 19 Jun 05 - 03:46 AM Does it perhaps come with additional track of rustling crisp packets, sweetie papers, drink cans being popped, coughs, sneezes, farts and belches, babies yelling and idiots giggling like manic bats? If not, I'm sure I could rustle you up one! LTS |

Subject: RE: what is 'concert sound'?? From: Blowzabella Date: 19 Jun 05 - 04:17 AM It might also be something made on a mini-disc or similar, carried by someone in the audience and then produced as a CD |

Subject: RE: what is 'concert sound'?? From: Kaleea Date: 20 Jun 05 - 03:25 AM Perhaps the sound of classical Pianist performing in a large hall with a bit of echo? Who knows what the person meant? Concerts vary enormously from the genre of Music to the site of the performance. It could also mean: the eardrum blasting screaming & drinking/doping so much you can't really hear, nor are you aware enough to care kind of "concert sound." |

Subject: RE: what is 'concert sound'?? From: Le Scaramouche Date: 20 Jun 05 - 03:50 AM Maybe it's more dynamic than stereo. |
|
Subject: RE: what is 'concert sound'?? From: EagleWing Date: 20 Jun 05 - 12:02 PM Might mean 5.1 surround sound, perhaps? You'd only call that "Concert Sound" if you were right in the middle of the performers, surely? Frank |

Subject: RE: what is 'concert sound'?? From: DaveA Date: 21 Jun 05 - 03:58 AM Alternatively, it may be referring to "Concert Pitch", that hubbub of sound created by Orchestras as they all tune their "A" above middle C to 440Hz. Perhaps the musicians took particular trouble to tune their instruments to this (supposedly) universal standard rather than to what their leader considered to be an in tune guitar (or whatever he/she was playing). Subject: RE: what is 'concert sound'?? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 21 Jun 05 - 04:18 AM Orchestral instruments are tuned to the A produced by an oboe - it being the most difficult instrument to adjust. It's so the instruments are all in tune with each other and make a sensible sound, rather than a tuneless cacophony. It's been done that way since before 440Hz or whatever was discovered. Orchestras can be tuned to baroque pitch as well, which is a different Hz rating. It's got nothing to do with concert sound, which I suspect is the effect of actually being at the concert, a sort of surround sound but without taking the eardrums out like the THX thingy at the cinema. Subject: RE: what is 'concert sound'?? From: Kaleea Date: 21 Jun 05 - 04:26 AM LTS--& all THX has a special meaning for my family. My oldest nephew invested in a better home theater a few years back. I went over for the grand premier, & he proudly seated me in the "hot spot" and proceeded to play a variety of tracks from CD's & action videos. When they asked me what I thought of it, I told the simple truth, "I can feel it in my butt!" Now you all know the true test of a high quality stereophonic sound system. |

Subject: RE: what is 'concert sound'?? From: GUEST,Concert Sound Date: 21 Jun 05 - 05:06 AM It sounds like something dreamt up by an advertising guy. |

Subject: RE: what is 'concert sound'?? From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 21 Jun 05 - 09:18 AM Thanks for your list of extraneous sounds, LTS. I can add three more sounds after attending a festival in Scotland some time ago: clacking heels on a child's party shoes, kids bursting balloons, and men engaging in political argument mixed with beer. Never let political types get mixed up with a musical event. It's "Bambi vs Godzilla," and the music is always Bambi. |

Subject: RE: what is 'concert sound'?? From: Torctgyd Date: 21 Jun 05 - 09:32 AM Perhaps they mean it's recorded in a studio but as if it was in a concert. By which I mean they stood in front of microphones and played, the result was recorded and released; as opposed to each part being individually recorded, recorded, over-dubbed and mixed, and then put out. |

Subject: RE: what is 'concert sound'?? From: chantal Date: 21 Jun 05 - 04:35 PM Thanks for all the suggestions. It did sound like some kind of advertising thing, especially when the contributor said "not stereo or mono." |
|
Subject: RE: what is 'concert sound'?? From: michaelr Date: 21 Jun 05 - 06:55 PM Right -- if it's not stereo or mono, it would have to be multi-channel, such as 5.1 surround (I think we can rule out quad as a failed experiment). Therefore I don't think Torctgyd has it right. Cheers, Michael |

Subject: RE: what is 'concert sound'?? From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 23 Jun 05 - 01:37 AM I still have an old pair of high quality 4 channel headphones. They are a brilliant device for monitoring - the rear channels have a fader pot on the ear muff, and there are 4 separate speakers, 2 in each earmuff - so you can use it for cueing while still listening to the output, etc, without any worry about electrical connections. There are 2 separate stereo plugs, one for front pair, one for back pair. I found it wonderful rather than trying to juggle two sets of headphones. |

Subject: RE: what is 'concert sound'?? From: wishwillow Date: 25 Jun 05 - 04:12 PM I just might know what you're talking about. But it was from way back. Saw a posting touting a folk concert CD they said wasn't in mono or stereo but concert sound. I had a battered old LP of it in stereo, and jumped at the chance to get a CD remaster, especially with what proposed to be some extra sound enhancements. In fact, it was the worst sort of a dub from an LP with pops, clicks and surface noise. Not only that, this CONCERT SOUND proved to be plain old mono. Title and label withheld to protect the guilty!
