Britain recently banned a whole heap of things made in China, notably underwear.... many shops were forecasting that they would go out of business because they were not able to buy in the cheap Chinese products and sell it on.

I too, am spending less on clothes. I seem to have everything in my wardrobe that I need (and many more I don't), and if I need trousers, I make them. Somehow, they don't seem to make trousers in my shape.

LtS, LOL!

My biggest frustration shopping for clothes these days is that more and more retail outlets stock only over-priced clothing made and designed, very poorly, in China. I've always liked hip-hugging flares, and I do look ok in them, but I ask you - why put those stupid-looking useless tiny pockets/flaps/stitching/studs all over the butt of people's jeans?

Is it because most Chinese people don't have much butt to begin with, so they want to accent what they do have?

All I can say is that even though I wear a size 7/8 these days (what used to be called a size 9/10 or even 11/12 when I was a teen - why IS that????) the poor designs make my butt look HUGE.

Or at least I think so!

So I try to find stuff made in Canada. More pricey, but much more intelligently designed, with better quality materials and workmanship as well.

On the upside, I'm spending a lot less on clothes these days. It's getting harder and harder to find anything made in Canada, even from traditionally Canadian retailers - thanks to China, Walmart, 'free trade' etc etc etc. So I've learned to make do with less.

as Kim C said
...................
Size is a relative thing. A tall, well-built woman in a 12 or a 14 (US size) isn't necessarily overweight. Frame size has a lot to do with it too.

I believe women of any size can dress in flattering clothes; and what's flattering on one is not necessarily flattering on the other. That being said, though, it's true that most retailers aren't too savvy when it comes to clothes for plus-sized women. That's unfortunate, because they want to look good too.
..................

I once knew a very tall woman (6') who dressed in long flowing clothes (pants, vast, coat) & surprised us all by saying she was size 20 & 20 stone (14 pounds in a stone = 280lb). She looked magnificent, and wouldn't have made the same effect is she had worn many of the styles deemed "suitable" by the fashion industry for her size.

I have a colleague who is about 5'10" & wears size 16 (same as me) unbelievable as it may seem, I guess it's her extra 3" of height cos she's certainly not carrying any extra weight.

"hurtful to people who just wanna be happy in their own skin"
If you ARE happy in your own skin, you won't CARE what I think about it... If you do care, then you probably aren't, no matter how much you think you are...
I've found that no matter how 'together' people are, including me, we are all connected to each other and internalise lots of stuff that impacts. In other words, in my humble opinion, we all do care because humanity has a gentleness and a fragility to it as well as a toughness and an 'I don't care-ness'. What would one call it - 'family of man (woman)'? 'tree of life'? 'no-one be an island'? Silly things like clothing does matter - it's our face to the world. Woman cop it worse I think because there are such stereotypes going on, but men also get it nowadays with the 'bee-oo-diful pecs and buns' crap. In the most good-humoured of ways I am simply saying leave people to be what they wanna be and celebrate the diversity and silliness of all of us. As a great(!!) Australian boxer said, "I luv yoos all". And ain't we all marvelous, particularly Giok and Sandra 'cos they flatter me and I will in return - "Yoos is gorgeous". I remember seeing Sandra at St. Albans festival and hadda tell her how grand and stately and just glorious she looked. For what she was wearing but also 'cos she was being 'her'. xx all (it's Saturday, sunny and I'm going to town so feeling damn good and in love with the world)

As far as jeans go, nowadays they all pretty much look like they've been run over by a truck. I prefer jeans that aren't all beat up when I buy them, but there aren't too many choices.

Anyhow, I'm over 30. I have a pair of hip-huggers. I don't spill out over the top. :-P

Dangerous ground this, I once made the mistake of starting a similar thread about Why do women wear high heels with denims , one of the replies I got was from Hilda Fish. Since this thread I've met said lady, and I will not be starting any more derogatory threads about heels and pants, Sandra in Sydney said it for me!

Here I am, fashion victim all my life, also rabid feminist. Much as I'm aware of image manipulation of women and changing sizes etc, I love colour, textiles, shape, and I'll wear what I bloody well like!!! I am also surrounded by women, many of them my dear friends and glorious and beautiful women, who have muffins hanging over, cracky pants, massive cleavage, and they don't care either. They wear what they bloody like!! I hate it when people snigger and laugh at older women as a consequence of THEIR OWN narrow minded insecurity (if you'll pardon me) because it is so hurtful to people who just wanna be happy in their own skin. Women (and men) of a certain age, have probably been through enough stuff to have a bit of wisdom and are intelligent enough to make choices. Ah, fashions both fun and a problem but people, whoever they are, have the right to be who they wanna be with a bit of fun or with a bit of love. Aren't we all a bit fragile as humans, and many of us can be completely destroyed by a look or a snigger at particular times because we aren't fitting into the (male) stereotype of size 8 and 20. Good on you size 8's and 20 - look as gorgeous as you can and be happy with it, but also good on you all of us older ladies who also look gorgeous for who we are and how we are. Wear those crop tops and low rises and let everything hang out if that's what you need to do. Stick your butts, your cracks, your cleavage and your muffin tops into everyone's faces and let them cope. You're gorgeous and I for one luv ya for it! With a big kissXXX

During the last couple of years that I have worked on a college campus, I have seen more butt cleavage than breast cleavage.

Etiquette demands that I pretend I don't notice, of course.

Today's fashion casualty, spotted in the Rideau Centre (downtown Ottawa shopping arcade) on my way to work at 0830 hr:

Black girl with a gorgeous buxom figure, arrayed in (from the top):
- a US Army-style camouflage cap;
- an incredibly teeny-tiny tank top in US Army camouflage print edged with (get this) baby pink piping;
- pink lace bra straps showing under said teeny-tiny tank top;
- skin-tight Lycra-assisted capri pants in sparkling white; and
- winkle-picker ankle-strap sandals with four-inch heels.

The outfit was obviously styled carefully and intended knock the eye out at 10 metres. Worked on me -- and I'm a stodgy old lady editor!

Up the West Port there's a young girl dancing
She's flaunting everything and turning men to stone
Down through Lauriston an old hag stumbles
She's roaring drunk and roaring home alone

GUEST, Hip Kid: Save your posts. Put in an envelope marked, "Read on my birthday, 2058."

You might be pleasantly surprised by how much fun life can still be even after gravity has had its way with your epidermis. Still, society rewards you now when it's all standing high and mighty, and that has some advantages. Enjoy 'em while they last, 'cause, hard as it is to imagine, they don't.

One thing for certain, the fashion industry today isn't exactly innovative......they just keep resurrecting the same old stuff and those caught up in the old mindless meat market are still hoping to fit in and be hip, the same as they were Forty Years Ago.

Hip Kid

I'm sure dear boy (or is it girl)- what you REALLY meant to say in your delightfully inflamatory way is the FATTIES don't like it when they can't wear a style suited to the reed-thin.

Knock off knocking your elders!! Many of us have better figures than the current crop of McDonald's-fed-couch-potato youth who, we are given to understand, are the first generation likely not to live as long as their parents.

"Like any other group of people there are a very few who rise to the top, and the rest are left somewhere near the bottom... "

Actually, in a bell curve distribution ( which is what is commonly seen in most "rankings") a very few rise to the top, a very few fall to the bottom, and most are in the middle.

And, of course, beauty is a relative thing- Each of us have our own standards, based on culture, preference, and other factors. As I have stated before, I prefer women who have curves in places that models don't have places.
