Barbara & I are coming to Australia for a visit from 6 April to 27 April to visit friends in Canberra and to attend the National Folk Festival. We expect to be in Sydney from the 6th to the 12th and will be going down to Melbourne / Victoria after the festival and departing on the 27th.

We've been long time sea music enthusiasts and participants in New York's South Street Seaport chanteysing activities since their inception in 1995. We would appreciate any help in connection with activities in the sea music / folk world in Sydney & Victoria during our visit.

We had planned this trip last year but had to cancel at the last minute for an absolulutely unexpected bout with pneumonia. Everybody 's healthy now and we are very enthusiastic about this trip. We lived in Canberra back in the early '80s

Anything happening on the beautifully restored sailing barque James Craig? Are the shanty sings still alive and well?

Hi Al & Barbara
Have a great time
Keep an ear open for Sheldon (Shell) Leon. He used to play guitar & sing (25+yrs ago), might be found among sea music or tall ship activities. Give him a big "HI" from me if you see him.

Here's the most recent email I have from the James Craig shanty gang in Sydney.
Bottom line is, they got together last night, and won't again until May, but at least
you'll have some contact numbers.

Date: Sat, 18 Mar 2006 20:18:04 +1100

The Shanty singalong sessions will get off to a rollicking start this year -
Sydney's own traditional Shanty group - the Roaring Forties - have agreed to
lead the next session !

The following session may not be until May, because the fourth Wednesday in
April is the day after Anzac Day and St Albans Folk Festival. A week earlier
is too close to Easter and the National Folk festival and a week later is
the day before North by Northwest ! ! !

PARKING is now only available in front of the National Maritime Museum and
has been cleared with their management. Turn into the driveway opposite the
big white building and then turn immediately left - press the button on the
Intercom at the right of the gate and tell you are there for the Shanty
Session on the James Craig.

James Craig Shanty Sessions are held on the 4th Wednesday of the month. If
you have any ideas for future sessions please let us know.

Hi Al and Barbara. Glad you are going to make it this time. The bad news, as you can see, is that we had a session on the James Craig last night. It was a lovely session, added to by a very heavy downpour of rain which had us huddling on the hatchcover under a leaking tarp which regularly dumped huge torrents of water off its sides, while we sang "Hey Rain". Anyway, it was all good fun. Unfortunately, because of April being full of festivals, there won't be another Craig session till May.

The good news, however, is that things will be happening in Sydney between the 6th and the 12th. I'll have to check what else there is, but I know that on Sunday afternoon, the 9th April, my folk club, North by Northwest, is having a concert with El Greko and Cloudstreet! And as a few Mudcatters already know, us Sydneysiders are pretty good at putting on an impromptu session for visitors!

For one thing, I share my abode with a shanty singer - John Warner, of the Roaring Forties, and our Earlwood barbeques are legendary (just ask Charley Noble ;-)) I'm sure a session could be arranged, either at our place or at Margaret Walters' place.

I'm also thinking you could possibly be shown around The James Craig if we speak to the right people. She's a marvellous restored 1874 barque which actually goes out on day trips, and is well worth seeing! I'll talk to Mike Richter about it.

As well as that, some of the Sydney catters, including myself, will be at the National. Looking forward to meeting you!

Jenny

G'day spindrift,

The James Craig regular public sessions actually grew out of a visit by Melbourne shanty / sailing / concertina types involved with a similar arrangement (but a part-restored craft not cleared for sailing) down in Melbourne. I brokered a visit and a gathering of Sydney concertina enthusiasts on the James Craig ... and it had enough momentum to carry on in its own right.

I'm not sure of the details (and contacts) are on my home computer, since I lost a lot of data when a brand new hard disk ... newly loaded with the contents of my elderly previous machine ... kept failing when I tried to create a back up ... and then was returned (by the computer shop) to the manufacturer ... for their refund - without re-capturing all my data! If I have the details, I'll post from home (or if & when Mudcat is operational!). Otherwise it will take a bit longer chasing other leads, but there is certainly some shanty scene down south of the border!

Regards,

Bob

Mudcatter badges for Spindrift, Bob?

Spindrift, check out the 'Ozcatters Meet at the National' thread.
According to the program on the National's website, there is at least 1 shanty singalong with Southern Cross Trawlers, Jerry Epstein & Danny Spooner (Fri).

Sat Danny is presenting Songs of the Whaling Trade.

I understand from reliable sources that Danny Spooner is recording the famous "Yangtse River Shanty." That's also a favorite of Barbara's. Maybe they should compare notes on where they collected it.

Glad to see you are still out there. I sent an email a few weeks ago and when you didn't reply I thought that perhaps your situation had changed. Sorry that we won't be there for a sing on the James Craig but we'd be delighted at the chance to see her. I'm a volunteer at the Seaport Museum in New York and regularly run tours on Peking, Wavertree and Ambrose.
Any folk or sea music performances or sings around Sydney would be of great interest to us. Are the Roaring Forties performing any where? If not between the 6th & 12th then perhaps we could come up form Canberra or even rearrange our return flight from Sydney rather than Melbourne.
Are your phone number and email address still valid from last year? Thanks so much for your help.

Thanks for the tip on the "Ozcatters Meet" thread. I'll follow up on it.
Barbara & I know Jerry Epstein from Pinewoods Folk Music in New York and occasionally at our monthly chanteysings at the Seaport. We met Danny Spooner on several occasions last year on his tour in the US and we plan to follow any of his performances at the National. We hope to see Danny and Gael when we are in Victoria following the National

Hi Al and Barbara -

The James Craig is actually in Sydney (though I can see how that's not obvious from the posting above), and Charlie and I very much enjoyed our visit - in fact, I was afraid Charlie might try to stow away so he could go on their sail the next day!

And if you have a chance to get out to Jenny and John's place in Earlwood for a barbeque - that was another highlight of our last visit!

Gee, I'm getting envious here.... Maybe next year.

Jenny will use any excuse for a party & the Forties like singing, too, so no doubt something will happen when you visit us in Sydney

A few hours after the El Greko/Cloudstreet concert Sunday 9th Jerry Epstein will be doing a house concert at Margaret's place - maybe the rest of the Forties will be there that night.

I'll see you at Danny's concerts at the National, I wouldn't miss them for quids.

G'day Al (spindrift) & Barbara,

As I thought, all the details of the August 2003 visit to Sydney by two concertina-weilding shantyer from Melbourne was lost in the Great Data Crash ... but I've dug back in the ConcertinaDownUnder Yahoo group files and sent off a message to one of them: Robert Brooks "onetime Mate" of the Polly Woodside - the restored, but permanently moored craft in question.

I haven't been involved with, or even visited, the Melbourne craft ... but I hope to scare up some details for you - if Robert is still on the ConcertinaDownUnder group.

I'll undoubtedly get to see you, at some point, in the (Australian) National Folk Festival this Easter ... and I'll make sure I get out a new batch of Mudcat badges ... including one for "spindrift"!

G'day spindrift (Al [... & Barbara?]),

I have not heard back from Robert Brooks (to be dead right "one-time second mate of the Polly Woodside") so I did a bit of searching: Polly Woodside .

Address: Melbourne Martime Museum
South Wharf Rd
Southbank VIC 3006
Phone: 03 9699 9760
Fax: 03 9699 6117
Email: polly@nattrust.com.au
Web: http://www.nattrust.com.au

Discover the sights, sounds and sensations of Victoria's fascinating maritime heritage.

Visit the restored 1885 tall ship Polly Woodside, once described as the 'prettiest barque ever built in Belfast'. Walk the deck marvelling at the complexity of the rigging and imagine the great square sails drawing aloft.

Polly Woodside is afloat in Melbourne's original wooden walled dry dock. Discover how the massive pumps emptied the dock and how ships were serviced and repaired here for almost a hundred years.
Historically listed cargo sheds house a rich collection of displays, artefacts, models as well a maritime library and photographic collection.

There is a focus on the development of the Port of Melbourne - its origins, importance to immigration and trade as well as its role in the continuing development of Victoria.

I would guess that the "www.nattrust.com.au" (National Trust) link indicates they are the body restoring the Polly Woodside - so they may have more info on their own site ... but probably not anything about shanty singing!

I'll pass on anything else that turns up.

BTW: Is that one ... or two ... "spindrift" badges ... and something else?

Regards,

Bob

Hi all, I have read through this thread with interest, what a great community mudcat is. (nearly tears in me eyes!)We (2BS&S) have met people and visited some great places either through mudcat or the web and I now have many "virtual" friends sharing "hard" information, some I have been priveledged to meet, Al, Barbara and Charley a very important trio of special people. So, as I see the trip unfold, I feel quite envious that Al and Barbara are about to meet more of those special people, well done mudcatters.

Since we expect to be in Sydney for about 6 days we've been wondering about the adviseability of renting a car or relying on taxis, buses etc. I expect we'll be staying in the downtown area. Any recommendations?

I live on the edge of the CBD & rely on public transport. I can get a direct train to Margaret's place (5 stations, about 10-12 minutes) or train & bus. I get train (2 stations to CBD) & bus (15 mins) to Jenny's club. I also have kind friends who take me home or part of the way home from concerts & sessions.

Depending on your plans for the 6 days, a car could make life easier if you want to go to distant places, like the Blue Mountains.

Hi again Al and Barbara. I have booked you into the concert on the 9th. I've also been talking to Margaret Walters, and she is working towards the Roaring Forties doing a bracket in the Jerry Epstein concert. I'm sure between us all, we can get you from my folk club to Margaret's place quite easily. I'll have my car for a start and can offer lifts. Depending on where you are staying, we can work out how you can get to my club. As Sandra said, it is easily reached by bus from the city.

Breakfast at Badde Manors would be a good thing to do if you are staying near Glebe. Their breakfast goes on well into the day - about 3pm I think, and a stroll up and down Glebe Point Road is interesting.

I haven't had a chance to find out any more yet about the James Craig, but would like to fit in a session/BBQ at Earlwood while you are here, and the only available date seems to be the evening of Friday the 7th. Would you be up for that? The weather seems to have been very pleasant lately - it's only early autumn - the best time of the year here I think - not too hot, and not as changeable as spring. The coloured lights are still up from Christmas, the barbie's ready to be fired up, and we'd love to have you here!

Al and Barb-

I believe you are experienced drivers for alternative sides of the road but Sydney is still a challenging experience. We favored walking, light rail, buses, and sharing cars driven by natives. For trips into the country (we never reached the outback) we rented cars, but I'll never forget when we rented a car for the first time at Sydney's International Airport, expecting to circle the city and head to the Blue Mountains, only to find outselves channeled back into deepest darkest Sydney...What a wonderful experience! My knuckles still ache! Judy's voice has never regained its even tenor... But we survived. Next time we take the train to the Blue Mountains and rent a car once we get there.

Glad to hear that Bad Manors is still doing its thing.

Do take the habour ferry to Manly, a lovely cruise though the harbour.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

getting rides for us.

There was marinated chicken,
Beef, lamb and kangaroo.

G'day,

Charley: "... expecting to circle the city and head to the Blue Mountains, only to find outselves channeled back into deepest darkest Sydney ..."

Ah well ... there is a fairly direct route - but you need to know that you do a half-circle of the Airport - before heading west (through the part of Sydney where I was born).

Spindrift (Al): I got a bounce on my email to Robert Brooks, of the Polly Woodside, so I have to presume he has changed ISPs ... or otherwise fallen off my connections. I'll chase up Mike Richter, to see if he has direct connections to the Polly Woodside crowd. (BTW: I couldn't find any reference to active shantying aboard Polly ... unlike the James Craig ... but I'm sure there will be some stalwart band of shanty-singers in a place as large and musical as Melbourne.

Bob

"All hands on deck!" John he cried,
Charley looked bemused -
"There's only grass," he replied
And poured out some more booze;
"Man the halyards, with a will, lads,
Woolloomooloo-belay!
Sheet 'er home, 'fore she's gone,
The tarp will blow away!"

Oops! I don't think I've sent you the details of where my place is, yet - assuming you are still coming to the BBQ on Friday?

I have your email address and the details of where you are staying, so I'll contact you one way or the other!

Jenny

JennyO-

Shouldn't really be a problem if they just follow the fire trucks west!

Woolloomooloo-belay!

Well, Al and Barbara are safely ensconced in their hotel, and I talked to them this afternoon. Bob Bolton is bringing them to the BBQ tomorrow night, so everything is under control - except of course the weather, although fine weather is forecast.

Last night, quite a stiff wind blew in, and the newly erected tarp held fast. That's a good sign!

...But it's haul upon the halyards,
Lash down that plate of roo -
I tell you, mates,
We had a time
At John and Jenny's BBQ!

Oh, good!!!

We'll get a blow by blow account of the BBQ. I'm hungry all over again.

That was kind of Bob Bolton to ferry Al and Barb over to Earlwood. The uncertainty of parachuting into a foreign city can be stressful. It all brings back such wonderful memories:

I was on the docks the other night, and eve-ry-thing was still;
I dreamed I saw them Pyrmont girls, they was dressed up fit to kill;
They wore Helly Hansen ca-mi-soles, and oil-skin lin-ge-rie,
Since ol' Frederick's of Woolloomooloo had decked 'em out that day.

Well, I loves a gal in wellies, and an old Bikini top,
But lately I's been wondering just where all this will stop;
For the girls all down on Kent Street, they's just puttin' on the dog,
Since ol' Frederick's of Woolloomooloo shipped out his catalog.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Well, we've been seeing quite a bit of Al and Barbara. Some of the goings on have been mentioned in this thread and this thread.

Friday night's BBQ went off smoothly, with much enthusiastic song-swapping and camaraderie. Food and drink went down well, and the weather was perfect!

Today's concert with El Greko and Cloudstreet was excellent - then we moved on to Margaret Walters place for Jerry Epstein, the Roaring Forties and more sessioning. I get the impression they are having a pretty good time.

Tomorrow I'm meeting them for breakfast at Badde Manors, and then in a few days it's the National - the usual mad social whirl for around these parts :-)

Jenny-

Thanks for the update. I also got a short note this morning from Al and Barb and they certainly have been having a wonderful time.

Sounds like the National is going to be a blast.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Yes Charlie, it shows every sign of being one of the best! If you can manage to come to our part of the world again some time, this definitely is the best time of the year, both festival-wise and weather-wise.

Now I'd better get to bed - otherwise I might sleep in and miss getting to Badde Manors, and that would never do!
