Art, it is my pleasure. Your work is something folks should know about. Thanks for keeping these great songs alive.
Hello Kat, aw I figured the best place to put a review would be where Art's CD would be sold. So a review is on the Waterbug and Folk Legacy websites. They turned out a far sight neater than they did on this thread! I'm still having to learn to navigate this forum.

Aye, Rex, thanks so much for the kind words. I am glad you found some parts of the CD to enjoy. It was fun putting it together. And I'm hoping a few Mudcatters have enjoyed it as well.

Roy and Elaine,
No need to wait until November. I'm sending you one even as we speak...

I put a review about this fine collection of Art's work, Chicago Town and Points West. It occurs to me that I might put it here too. So here goes. Thanks Art for a great bit of Americana! Rex
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Town and Points West

Art has been plying the waters of folk music longer than most of us.
In the course of this musical journey, some of his performances were
captured on tape. I am sure grateful that some folks got with Art and
put some of these gems on a CD. For those of you that know Art Thieme, this is Art at his best, to borrow his comment about one of his songs, warts, roses and all. There are 18 tracks of the songs of the coming up years of this great country. From the steel mills of the Great Lakes, the old South and the wild West. You'll find material here from Leadbelly, Bob Wills, Pete Seeger and Uncle Dave Macon. Art knows a good song when he finds it and how to bring it to life. Some of us understand a song's place in time. Art goes beyond that to a songs _place_. Where it is from. Where it grew up and frolicked in the meadows of its youth. All this from a man that still understands the good to be found in a Martin guitar and a voice as warm and comforting as my wood stove. Get yourself a copy of this CD and have another look at America. Warts, roses and all.

You people sure are something special!! Thanks so much for your friendship and support. And of course, for your music. I've been busy today with worry about Tom Dundee--and answering the phone and e-mails about this article -- all while looking for any hopeful glimmers in his situation. It's an emotional roller coaster, but that's cool. It's a lot like life. Glorious in all the dynamic complexities. Had a good talk with Utah Phillips today as well.

I do hope you who get this CD find some things there that are to your liking. Charlie Madigan only mentioned my banjo forays into two good old pop tunes---but REALLY folks, there are folk songs on it too!   ;-)

Thanks to Dennis Cook and Sandy and Caroline and Micah Solomon at Oasis CD --- for EVERYTHING !

Madigan's article opened a flowing fountain of love expressed for Art. Orders have been coming in all day, many by phone from people who tell Caroline they're old folkies, and she must be too young to remember Art's wonderful Chicago years. Hah! Caroline is 73, and we've been friends of Art's since 1959, and proud of it!
Keep 'em coming, kids. We've plenty more on the shelf.

Listening to Art Thieme

Published April 18, 2006

Do you remember the folk music era?

I have musician friends who believe they know roughly when it no longer served as a viable way to line up enough gigs to make enough bucks to make folk music your only thing. It shifted from being about music to being about entertainment and then along came the Beatles, the British invasion, changing tastes, and not many gigs.

Sure, we still have a local gem, Old Town School of Folk Music. You can go up on Lincoln Avenue right now and come out knowing OK guitar and songwriting technique in pretty short order, along with lots of other folk stuff.

But that's genre to me.

I'm talking about a time.

I got in on a little piece of the back end of it.

Where I came from, playing guitar was a hall pass to young man's paradise, even if you were not very lovely. I played some rock and some country, but mostly folk, dark and difficult songs about devils and seducers and lovely young women who made wrong choices, dying coal miners and, of course, train wrecks.

The era spawned an immense number of people who thought they were going to be folk musicians. They let their hair grow. They bought pretty good guitars. They plucked at mountain dulcimers. They invested in cotton shirts and jean jackets and smoked unfiltered cigarettes and tried to make their eyes as squinty and as big-city troubled as Bob Dylan's.

Tortured songs of love and loss were the sine qua non of the late 1960s, early 1970s folk performance.

"That's What You Get for Lovin' Me." Great song. Always wowed them.

Imagine that, we who had, as yet, neither loved nor lost, singing songs of love and loss.

There were some voices that were so honest and authentic that the minute you heard them, you knew they believed it. The Beers Family albums were always like that. The Golden Ring albums, too, were folk treasures.

That's how Art Thieme was.

He was a Chicago voice when folk music was an era.

I came to work one day awhile back and what did I find but an e-mail from Art Thieme, who now lives down in Peru, Ill. He wanted to know who could review a folk album at the Tribune because a collection of his live stuff was being issued by Folk Legacy Inc. and some press would help.

My sad thought is that no one could review a folk album anymore because it's just not the kind of thing big media pay much attention to. There are still lots of great folk musicians all over Chicago, but you have to seek them out. Many people have moved on to other things.

At this point, this must become a sad story with a golden nugget in the center of it.

You will not hear Art Thieme live again. You haven't been able to catch him live for years. He has multiple sclerosis, and even his treasured (unique too) nine-string Martin guitar cannot help him.

But I am looking just now at "Chicago Town & Points West," a collection of his best live stuff from Folk Legacy.

It is a lovingly assembled piece of work, full of singing, storytelling and some delightful banjo riffs on some great old songs, Hoagy Carmichael's "Lazy Bones" (from 1933) being one of them and Bob Wills' "San Antonio Rose" (1944) another.

I am suggesting, of course, that you find some way to get one of these for yourself, because what it represents is the best work of a man whose fate left him with no way to do any more best work.

That is very sad, but there is a legacy in this collection that remains as bright and as lively as those grand nights on stage back when folk music was an era, not a genre, and Art Thieme was one of its strong Chicago voices.

Folk Legacy is at 800-836-0901 (or http://www.folk-legacy.com/store/Scripts /default.asp), and they will be happy to hear from you and Art will be happy that you called too.

I have had a couple or three e-mails asking for a list of the songs on the "Chicago Town" CD.

They are:

"Chicago Town Blues" (my own--one of the very few that is)

"The Wreck Of The Tennessee Gravy Train"--Uncle Dave's old song that could easily be about modern huge budgets.

"Diamond Jo (Joe)" Duncan Emrich got this song for the Library of Congress' Archive Of American Folk Song from a prisoner at Angola Prison, a man named Charlie Butler in 1937.

"Jim Bridger And The Winter Of 1830" A tall tale about the 1820s mountain man---and great liar.

"Sioux Indians" A ballad of the American push westward.

"When I Was A Cowboy" From Leadbelly--making fun of Gene Autry.

"Stealin'" A song about the wonders of stealthy love from the Memphis Jug Band.

"Ridin' Down The Canyon" A fine song of Western beauty by Gene Autry and Smiley Burnett who wrote it in a car on the way to a gig near Chicago when both were with the WLS National Barn Dance in that city.

"A Scottish Soldier" Admittedly, this song from Andy Stewart came from Scotland, but I figure that if ya go west from Chicago, eventually you will get to Scotland!!

"Lazy Bones" I finger-pick this great Hoagy Carmichael song on a Vega Tubaphone banjo. It always seemed quite natural to me that we urban folksingers sometimes ruralized the popular songs our parents listened to.

"Groundhog With my jaws/jews/juice harp. It is rural song about folks securing necessary protein-and how to have fun doing that. Exhibits my 'different' style on this ancient instrument.

"The Hills Of Roane County" A true song with a great tale to tell. I learned it from one of the very first old-timey folk revival bands---The Philo Glee And Mandolin Society --- in Champaign, Illinois---1959 or '60.

"Molly Darling" John Hartford told me that this song was written by William Shakespeare Hayes. It's a wonderful love song.

"Mary Charlotte Ann McGhee" I learned this from Bill Chipman (Billy Chips) in Chicago in 1965. Bill was from Senath, Missouri in the Missouri panhandle--a.k.a. "swamp Eastern Missouri"--a.k.a. the land of the gumbo mud. Bill had a wonderful rural/country voice, and a unique flat-picking style I've never ever heard again. He made a great tape for me of his found folksongs.

"The Biggest Whatever" A creature feature song from the Dillards Wheatstraw Suite album. I had fun with this for a long time.

"San Antonio Rose" This is a right but ragged banjo instrumental of Bob Wills' classic song done by me during a song-swap with old friend, Cathy Fink, at Chicago's No Exit Coffeehouse And Gallery sometime in the 1970s or 1980s--but definitely not the 1990s. Listen carefully and you will hear Cathy's unabashed spontaneous outburst after a particularly ragged part of this tune.

"In Soho On Saturday Night" A song of a Pittsburgh, PA neighborhood when they tried to reform the denizens thereof.

"No More Booze" A song I learned from Canadian Ed McCurdy. These were the days before 6-packs. If you wanted to take it home you had to have a metal can filled up for you at the saloon.

"Hard Times In The Mill" A song from S. textile mills---before their sad and cruel employment realities were corrected here in America---so globalization could make way for those factories to easily be shipped to other countries where the inhuman human rights violations could, once again thrive. And the former workers in the USA could either choose to live homeless on the streets, or they could join the armed forces and be sent to Iraq or Afghanistan or whatever's next!

"A Dollar Ain't A Dollar Any More" A humorous take on the joys of run-away inflation from a 1940s 78 rpm record by The Union Boys. The Union Boys included Woody Guthrie and Burl Ives and Josh White--among others.

"I'm Gonna Leave Old Texas Now" A short Texas song about changing times and how one man dealt with it. It contains one of my two favorite lines in all of folk music: "I'm a better man for just the knowin' of you!" (One of my other favorite lines is on this CD too----in the song "Hard Times In The Mill" ------- To find out--give it a listen...

All the best,

Art Thieme

Kat, I got away with that story/jokelore on at least two records I can think of. It led off my first album---and it was the only thing on the album that got air play! Drove me nuts. Even Dr. Demento played it. To paraphrase ranger Gus in Lonesome Dove, "I never was one to let a good story go just because it had some age on it!"

People, Thanks for the kind words.

Kat,
I want it made extremely clear here that I, Arthur Thieme, was a complete gentleman when, as you said in your post above, went to bed with you and Rog!!! After dinner, when you, because of hard times there, took the cottage cheese off the table prematurely, I didn't say a word!!

Then, when it was time for bed, Roger slept between the two of us and I just scrunched up there on the edge of the bed.

When Roger had to use the john, you told me, "Well, now's your chance!" --- Again, I was a gentleman! I quickly got up, saw my chance, went to the fridge and ate the rest of the cottage cheese.

After that I was full, and slept better---but on the floor!

I just wanted to make that clear to all you Mudcatters!!

Love,

Art

G'day Art,

I just came back from Tasmania - 11 days ago. Patricia and I probably holiday in Tasmania more than anywhere else. Admittedly Pat is a Tasmanian ... but I went down there on a hiking trip in 1964/65 - and moved down there late 1965, to work on Dams / buildings / ... briefly worked as fish-gutter! ... / as well as more dams in the Snowy Mts of NSW and Aust. Capital Territory.

This trip was more a matter of catching up with (Pat's) family and our friends as well as a few "tourist" spots we had not yet visited - but it was hard coming back to steamy Sydney!

where would I be without Mudcat - to the left of my screen is about half a metre of Mudcatter CDs, a few from folks I've met (Charley Noble, Joybell, Crane Driver & Sussex Carol, El Greko, Tradsinger, Bob Zentz) the rest from folks I'm unlikely to ever meet, some I've corresponded with, others I've I've only seen in threads. Mudcat is a treasure almost beyond belief

Sandy,

I am told I'm signed in here at Mudcat and have tons of P.M.s waiting to be read by me. THEN, as I've mentioned in numerous threads, when I try to read all those P.M.s going back over a year or two, I'm told I "must be a member to see them"---so I remain in limbo, and even though I'm a member, I'm not a member, but I AM a member, but NO!

I've signed out and tried to re-up my membership a bunch of times----and that might be the problem: I may have jammed up the cyber black hole and got stuck sideways so that getting "born again" as a Mudcatter cannot happen without a digital Cesarean section of some kind. I have followed all of Mr. Offer's directions to no avail. Such is life...

Barbara, lets meet for coffee after class!? Thanks for being here...

Art

Sandra in Sydney:
We processed and shipped your order today. I figured it had to be from a Mudcatter, but realized I referred to the "comment' line as a "message" line in my above e-missive. Hope that didn't discourage any of you from identifying your Mudcat status when ordering. I think Art would appreciate knowing how well his CD is doing among his Mudcat friends.
Get your cookie replaced soon, Art!

Ah, I've started listening to the cd, Art. What a pleasure to hear more songs & stories in your smooth voice & with your gentle humor! I haven't written on the "when I first came to Mudcat" thread, but one of the biggest gifts to me has been the friends I've made & the music I've discovered. You & I have never met in person, but I count you as a dear friend--one I never would have met, except through the Mudcat. I came to my friendship w/ Sandy & Caroline the same way, as well as Rick Fielding & others too numerous to name, but dear to my heart. I have grown in my knowledge & appreciation of folk music & count it one of the great blessings of my life. Thank you & thanks to Dennis (who I've known in 2 lifetimes!) for this new gift of music!

much love,

barbara

Sandra,

I cannot recieve P.M. messages now, but if you could have Bob Bolton e-mail me your actual mailing address I can send you just about EVERYTHING on an MP3. Old friend, Joe D'Angelo, who made this MP3 CD of my stuff, failed to include side two of my first album for Kicking Mule---but the Songs Of The Heartland LP is there, and even some live and ragged shows of mine at the No Exit Coffeehouse are there as well. I could put that first LP on a cassette for you.---- Even a cassette of mine called "A.T.--LIVE AT WINFIELD" is on the MP3. I do have Bob's Leichhardt N.S.W. address.

Next, at Folk Legacy, Sandy will be doing a CD of my "A.T.--ON THE RIVER" cassette plus tracks from the WINFIELD cassette. Since Kicking Mule Records was sold to Fantasy Records and those albums are in limbo, I've tried to re-record my favorite songs from those LPs on more recent CDs etc. The cowboy song, "Billy Vanero" from the first album, and also "Blue Mountain" that I learned from Frank Hamilton, are ones I wished I'd re-recorded before I couldn't pick any more.

All the best to you, and B.B. too.

Art Thieme

oops, sorry Sandy, I started to write a message, but deleted it, my order also included 2 shanty CDs - Johnson Girls & Boarding Party.

eek, imagine what might have happened if you had told Art to 'get a real job'

Bob Bolton & I were comparing our Fine Art holdings & all we need is the first 2 & the 6th on Art's discography - one day!

I'm looking forward to my parcel.

The orders are coming in, but i do wish all you Mudcatters would identify yourselves in the message line provided. I don't know many of you by your real names, and I'd like to be able to tell Art how many of you are being so supportive of this venture. I was delighted to get an early order from the wonderful Sam Hinton out in La Jolla, for example. Just put your 'Cat name in the provided line, please.
I trust that all of you realize that the profits from this production go into a fund for Art and his wife, Carol. We who provide the CD deduct only our costs, and the rest goes to one of the finest friends a fellow could have. Forty-six years ago, Art told me he wanted to be a folksinger. I said, "Go for it!" and, by golly, he DID! One of the best things I ever did.

All of your comments here are very much appreciated by me. I do hope there will be some few tracks on this that you enjoy. --- I did just get a wonderful e-mail from Gordon Bok saying he enjoys it a lot. (Seems he got his direct from Dennis Cook at his (Gordon's) concert in Maryland right before Dennis & Judy left for England.) But Mr. Bok has ALWAYS been a real and incandescent favorite singer and performer of ours. It seems to me that it is always totally the best kinds of possible feelings I can have when the people I enjoy and respect enjoy what I've done musically. What an exhilarating treat to hear those sentiments from Gordon--!!

All of you folks are something else! Thanks, again...

Art

From: GUEST,Art Thieme

Yep, it's out!! www.folklegacy.com

I am exhilarated and happy to announce that ART THIEME--CHICAGO TOWN AND POINTS WEST, my first CD since 1998, is up on the Folk Legacy Records website for all who would like to secure their very own copy or copies of it for themselves or for their store's CD bins.

These songs and tales, folklore and jokelore, puns and fun, are all taken from 15 hours of never-before issued songs from my repertory--over the years. They are some of my favorites!

DENNIS COOK (yes, Judy's hubby) has done some real sound engineering magic to produce this album, and I heartily wish to thank him, and all the other good folks involved in this project for ALL that he, and they, have done to make it come to fruition. SANDY AND CAROLINE PATON, as always, have made room for this and my other two CDs for Folk Legacy in their fine catalogue---and all I can say is, once again, "Thank You." It has been a fun ride!!

Love to you all,

Art Thieme
