There's an excellent history of the Carter Family that you can currently listen to for a few more days on the BBC Radio 2 Website. It's narrated by Dolly Parton, from a script written by Sid Griffin, an Appalachian expatriate who currently lives in the UK, and has lots of notable voice contributing.

   Thanks for the link! I just listened & enjoyed it very much. I play Autoharp as well as Guitar, & appreciate the tremendous contribution the Original Carter family gave to Music.
By the way, The Autoharp is played widely across these United States of America, not just in the Appalachian region. In fact, here in California, there is an annual Autoharp Gathering which attracts players from all over the USA & many other parts of the world.

It's a pleasure, Kalea. The autoharp is a growing instrument in the UK as well. A very keen bunch of people get to our Sore Fingers workshop every Easter to learn from people like Karen Mueller and Mike Fenton. Yes the Carter Family did us all a great service.

I have a question about the Carter family. The book "Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone," about the Carter family presents the story differently from the BBC show. The latter givese a much more positive and sympathetic view of AP. What are people's opinions on this? It would be interesting to know what Maybelle and AP's descendants had to say.

Thanks for reminding me. I'd forgotten all about it and just managed to catch the Listen Again before it goes off the Internet. There's also a 16 minute interview on the Radio 2 site, with the programme's scriptwriter, Sid Griffin. Click the More info about this show button. Then click the interview button.

I've just listened to said interview. It stops, it honest to God stops in mid breath just as the interviewer asks Griffin to summarise the Carter Family's musical legacy. Thanks a million, BBC.

Please. We are talking about real people's music, not the sanctimonious piffle he used out come out with. Unless of course you mean Mrs. Sidney Carter, whom Alan Lomax recorded during his field trip of the Southern United States in 1959.
