About a year ago, I got up quite early at 0:darkthirty to go with a friend to hit the garage/yard sales. It went something like this:

Friend: Are you ready?
Kaleea: Where's my caffiene?!!
F: Let's take my car.
K: mmmph
F: Isn't it a glorious morning?
K: What the $%^*& is that %^&*()+*^$ thing?!!
F: It's the sun coming up-isn't it beautiful?
K: The ^&*%$#~ thing is burning my eyes!! My head is killing me, pull into that quick trip, I need more %$## caffiene!!

I think I'm a night owl.

I'm definitely a morning person, this time of year I can't stay in bed for long, there's too much I want to do outdoors. I can sometimes even manage a bit of gardening before I leave for work. (Unfortunately housework is inclined to take a back seat)

If I get up nice and early I can get on with the things I have to do and they seem to get done much more quickly. If, for some reason, I don't start work as soon as I get up, that's when the putting off comes in. I just can't get going later on in the morning.

Our problem is that I am an early morning, early to bed person and Ted is the opposite. If it weren't for the necessary daily routine, we'd only meet in the middle of the day for a little while!

I remember when I was about 14, my Mum telling me that I was old enough to decide what time I went to bed. For a week or two I stayed up watching television, went to bed and read. By the end of the fortnight I was back to going to bed and to sleep at about nine. If left to my own devices, I'd get up at about 6 and go to bed at 10.

Love Lynne

I am definately a night person. I tend to look at the morning sun and ask, "Who are you trying to kid?"

I like both ends of the day although do tend to be a nightime person, particularly if I'm reading a good book, get engrossed in some crochet or get involved in a song session. At a recent get together I was going to hit the sack at about 11.00pm but someone started doing sixties numbers and there were four of us trying to harmonise on all the old standards until about 2.00am.

I usually wake up after about 6-7 hours of sleep, except when I'm really tired. Sometimes an afternoon nap can bring me back up if I've had to get up early but I tend to try and go through without as than I know I will go to sleep when I put my head down at night.

We were in Cornwall a couple of weeks back and I loved taking my five year old grandson down to the beach at about 7.00am each morning. The light on the water was wonderful and the tide had washed the sand clean. We picked up interesting shells and stones, climbed over the rocks, paddled in the sea and just generally had fun before most people were up.

Three horses, a house, a family and a full time job - no choice it has to be morning.

Both for me too, Divis. Like you, I've just retired and it takes from 7am round to 2am to get done allthat I want to do.

How did I ever find time to work?

Late night is good for work if there's a job that needs doing, but early mornings are good for the opposite.

I agree Clinton, when you have all day to do something we tend to put it off until later. I get more done late on myself, less to distract you.

Love the topic and the postings!

I'm a morning person, doubt about that. I love the early morning, however right now with working two jobs and the school load I'm dealing with until December, I don't get up on days that I don't have a commitment as I need as much sleep as I can get.

With that said, nothing beats an early morning walk or hike, or getting up at about 4am for a road trip... Gotta do one real soon, thinking about it :)

There is something equally powerful to me about sunrises and sunsets. They remind me to be thankful and to be quiet- both are important for me to remember!

Thanks my friends!

I must agree with MMario. In my younger days I was a "Go to bed at 3am and sleep until 11am" person. Now I'm usually in bed by 10:30 and up at 6:30 because of my work schedule. Just don't speak to me until about 10am and we'll get along just fine!

I am a mid-afternoon person. "mornings" - no matter what time of day they occur are horrible. and I'm not a late night person. I have about 4 hours of "function" in me.

Night by nature, although I've learned to appreciate early mornings through being forced to do so by my work schedule. I still can't fall asleep before a certain hour, though, so I tend to be grouchy in the morning if I have to get up too early, especially if people try to talk to me too much. I can get up early just fine but I really just want to be left alone before about 11:00.

Walked the shoreline of the local Lough at 6.00 am this morning. Met a fox which looked to be as old as myself ! Met a couple on holiday here from Canada who said they arrived at this nature reserve at 4.30am to hear the Dawn Chorus.Played back the recording they made of it. Without doubt the best time of the day. I have a bit of a sleep when the soaps come on tv !

As Sandra and freda can confirm, I am most definitely a night person. I agree that early mornings and sunrises are delightful, and on the rare occasions I have seen one, I have vowed to get up and see them more often. Alas, I'm afraid that more of the early mornings I have been awake have been from staying up rather than getting up!

Being a night person comes in very handy at folk festivals - I can outstay just about anybody at late night sessions (these young'uns - no staying power :-)), and one year at the National, I walked out of the Session Bar at 7.30am, went back to my tent, was spotted by a poet friend of mine who was just getting up to go to a poet's breakfast, so I pretended I was just getting up too and went to the poet's breakfast with him. I couldn't do that 2 nights in a row tho - have to catch up on the sleep somewhere!

On a normal night, it's not unusual for me to stay up till 3 or even 4 in the morning, and fortunately my lifestyle allows me to do that. I can get by on 6 hours of sleep a night, but I'm happier with 7. I've tried to change gradually, but I tend to slip back into being late again. If I go to bed too early, I take longer to get to sleep anyway. This way, I go straight to sleep and feel well rested when I get up. I don't see any reason to fight it really. I enjoy having time to myself in the late night hours, and John enjoys his time to himself in the early morning hours, so it all works.

I did manage to get up for Mayday with the Sydney Morris Men one year at stupid o'clock, but have only managed it once so far.

Actually, my favourite time of day is sunset. I love it when I can be outside to enjoy one, and over the years I have taken some spectacular sunset pictures.

I'm a night person & when our bosses discoverd flexi-time in 1976 I found the perfect work hours, 10am - 7pm. I can't imagine what life would have been like if I had continued as a 9-5 person. I get to bed between 12.30 - 1.30 & wake sometime between 7-7.30, exept on the mornings when I have an 8.30 medical/physio appointment when I get up 6, but still go to bed at the proper hour!

For a few years I used to meet friends for brekkie at 7am one morning a week, which meant rising at 5.30 to get the 6.30 train (ya see an interesting class of folks on the early morning trains!). Then I always yawwwwnnnned over brekkie, however this stopped when my first Secret Santa pressie took forever to arrive & I took to obsessively going to the post office every working day until it arrived in Feb!

I take some time to get my eyes properly opened in the morning & one day discovered I wasn't wearing my glasses when I went to take them off so I could jump into the shower! So squinting horribly, back I went to my bedroom to collect them.

Morning, though these days, due to pressures of life and business, I stay in bed whenever I get the chance. Also something to do with HAVING to get up at 6.15 on weekdays. If I didn't have to, I probably would but since I do I don't like to if you see what I mean. Even when, at weekends, I get the chance to stay in bed, i'm still usually up by 8 and often earlier. Like Liz, I'm unbearably cheerful and awake in the morning...soon as I'm up I'm alert and alive. It drives mad all those who take an hour and six cups of coffee to wake up properly. But if you can get up at dawn, it's definitely the best time of day.

Love Lynne

This working in the morning and evening with a rest in the afternoon works pretty well for the cows too... My dairy farmer uncle does it every day. His summer days start at 4.00am whether he wants it to or not.... In winter he gets a lie in until 5.00am. Oh, and cows don't take the weekend off.

I'm a morning person, in that I'm unbearably cheerful first thing, and can often be found (like now) performing some quiet task or hobby before even the cats are up and crepuscing. I've been watching the dawn creep over the roof ridges here... the pearly pink clouds of aurora have given way to the misty, mazy light of what promises to be another scorching hot, sticky, muggy day.

And on that note, I'm going back to bed!

I'm with Peace too. :)

For sunrises, I love to sit on the deck (or dock depending where we are) in my jammies with a cup of coffee to greet the day...love the sound of the birds singing in the early morning too.

Late nights around here bring fireflies in the summer and an absolutely stunning view of the night sky in the winter (nice in the summer too but those crystal clear, bitter cold winter nights...nothing like them for viewing the stars).

And Rapaire....I think your Grandmother is on to something! I lived on a giant farm in Austria that was run by two older folks. We worked in the early morning, rested in the afternoon and back to work in the evening...it was a very pleasant way to get the day's work finished! :)

I'm with Peace. And the stars, seen from a vantage point without light pollution from cities, are, well, stellar!

Work in the cool of the day, morning and evening, my Grandmother used to say, and nap during the heat of the day.

I spent amny, many years punching other folks time-clocks at atrocious hours of the morning...then when I 'retired', I discovered that my natural rhythms are to go to bed at 1-2 or so, and sleep till 9-10.

I do like the cool of the morning in Summer...if I happen to stagger up in time...

Summer morning sunrises ... nothing like them. I usually make a habit of going out on Sunday mornings to watch the sunrise over the ocean ... always take a camera with me ... not all sunrises are the same.

LIke Divis, I am a both. I like the hours of darkness and by preference I don't go to bed until around 1 o'clock; on the other hand I like the freshness of day before the sun is fully engaged so I get up between 6:00 and 6:30.

That's not quite enough sleep to suit me so I am a happy napper around 8:00 for an hour or so. I couldn't do that before I retired but I enjoy it a lot now. Of course, there are many days when I don't get a nap- music nights tend to start around 8:00.

I don't get to see the early mornings much anymore, but the hour before dawn has always been my favourite, from when I was a surfer, and later when I was a factory worker.
As a surfer it was always a humbling experience to be next to the ocean alone at that hour, whatever the season, whatever the weather. Surf or no surf, to jump into the ocean alone, before sunrise, is both calming and terrifying if you can take that on board.
Arriving at the factory before sunrise as I recall was not quite as awe-inspiring, but I always rose early enough to enjoy the peace of the morning, at home, on the way to work, and in the factory I would have a cup of coffee with others of like mind before the machinery was started up.
Now I am a father, and my new favourite hour varies according to the moods of master and madam.

Isn't it great to see the summer months here at last and enjoy all they have to offer.I go for a walk around the shoreline of Lough Neagh at around 6.00 am each morning. It has to be the best time of the day. You get to meet the wildlife and the sight of a level mist over the water is a sight to behold. Sadly many people don't see this time of day, like the night owls among us. I go on five hours sleep a night so I qualify as both.

What's your Favourite time of day ?
