John McCain was booked to deliver his pre-candidacy stump speech at college commencement ceremonies in New York. One of the students who appeared on the podium before him gave a short address opposing McCain's support for the occupation of Iraq. She began with a beautiful a capella rendition of the song "Living Planet" by Jay Manquita. Read her remarks and link to the sound file at the following link.
We can change the universe by being who we are.

I was bemused to see that some wanker from McCain's office claimed that she showed him disrespect by behaving the way she did.

She gazumped his political game, and made him look a hypocritical fool, and that's just not Patriotic in America! (Who says the USA doesn't have a Royal Privileged Class!!!)

Which demonstrates what foreigners see as why America is totally fucked up!

:-)

Of course, we do have such wankers in Australia too - but they get openly told so pretty quickly!

Our idiots get elected, but usually form minority governments. That way they can't hurt the country too much. We hope.

"some wanker from McCain's office claimed that she showed him disrespect"

It was McCain's 'political minder' (to use the Aussie term) - or 'the power behind the throne string puller' who was so stupid as to think that doing the exact speech three times would be a smart thing when dealing with intelligent people! :-)

Thank you, Robin, for your kind words. Nice to know there are folks out there who can be global enough to keep everyone in line. Any words of wisdom about those darn Tibetians?

The US political system is still set in the 1800s... slow communication systems and all...

I listened to the whole recording and the gir's whole speech (I think it was a WONDERFUL speech) and I also have read several reports on it. What I haven't read is what McCain's reaction to her speech was. Does anyone know?

Mcain's favorite folk song has always been The Vicar of Bray.

Its autobiographical.

THE VICAR OF BRAY

In good King Charles' golden days, when loyalty no harm meant,
A zealous high churchman was I, and so I gained preferment.
To teach my flock, I never missed
Kings are by God appointed
And damned be he who dare resist or touch the Lord's annointed.

Chorus

And this be law, I shall maintain
Until my dying day, sir
That whatsoever king may reign,
Still I'll be the Vicar of Bray, sir.

When royal James usurped the throne, and popery came in fashion,
The penal laws I hooted down, and read the Declaration.
The Church of Rome, I found, did fit
Full well my constitution
And I had been a Jesuit, but for the Revolution.

When William was our King declared, to ease the nation's grievance,
With this new wind about I steered, and swore to him allegiance.
Old principles I did revoke
Set conscience at a distance,
Passive obedience was a joke, a jest was non-resistance.

When Royal Anne became our queen, the Church of England's glory,
Another face of things was seen, and I became a Tory.
Occasional conformists base
I blamed their moderation;
And thought the Church in danger was from such prevarication.

When George in pudding time came o'er, and moderate men looked big, sir
My principles I changed once more, and I became a Whig, sir.
And thus preferment I procured
From our new Faith's Defender,
And almost every day abjured the Pope and the Pretender.

The illustrious house of Hanover and Protestant succession
To these I do allegiance swear --- while they can hold possession.
For in my faith and loyalty
I never more will falter,
And George my lawful king shall be --- until the times do alter.

Wonderful song! It states clearly the politics of religion. it should be rewritten to include King George of the U.S.A. and Vicar of Foulwell.

As my memory serves me, McCain opposed Martlin Luther King's Holiday when he was in Arizona.

No one should be fooled by McCain.

Frank
