Subject: RE: HAPPY Yorkshire Day From: Folkiedave Date: 01 Aug 06 - 06:13 PM No sure how to celebrate. Might have a pint I suppose. Which reminds me here is a test to seek if you are really "Yorkshire". Two blokes best of friends, share lots of things, meet every night for forty years, one calling at the other's house 9.00 pm on the dot. They go to the pub, have a few pints and come home. Every night. One night he knocks on the door and the wife comes to the door. "I am sorry" she says, "but he died this afternoon". "Did he say 'owt about a tin of paint" came the reply. |

Subject: RE: HAPPY Yorkshire Day From: Soldier boy Date: 01 Aug 06 - 08:36 PM Eeee hecky thump I've missed adding my "Hail Yorkshire" to this ere thread in time, but sod it; HAIL YORKSHIRE anyway. As a bone and bread Yorkshireman I have been very disappointed with the lack of celebration for this day and the lack of coverage and support in the press. The biggest and best support as a whole region and community I have come across has been in bonny SADDLEWORTH. At The Saddleworth Folk Festival last weekend the Yorkshire Day flags and banners were all over the place. People in this area ( previously in Yorkshire but now in Lancashire / Greater Manchester) refuse to accept boundary changes etc and still insist on calling themselves Yorkshire people. God bless 'em. Once a Yorkshire man/woman, always a Yorkshire man/woman and long may they reign ! |

Subject: RE: HAPPY Yorkshire Day From: Les from Hull Date: 02 Aug 06 - 07:48 AM I was hoping we might get some fraternal greetings from that county to the left of us (the name of which escapes me). But it did seem to be slightly falling down on its job of keeping the weather of us as some rain did actually fall on God's Chosen Acres during our National Day. |

Subject: RE: HAPPY Yorkshire Day From: Les from Hull Date: 02 Aug 06 - 08:29 AM Thanks, mate. It's good of you to confess it. We all have our cross to bear! Not all of those heavily-pregnant women herded over the Pennines made it successfully, I know. I know it's a bit early but let me be the first to wish you Happy Lancashire Day! |

Subject: RE: HAPPY Yorkshire Day From: Raggytash Date: 02 Aug 06 - 10:28 AM True Yorkshire only to the East of Hull eh? Is that why they're a bit wet, what with floppin' about in the North sea all day Greeting from one born in Gods county ..... The County Palatine of Lancashire |

Subject: RE: HAPPY Yorkshire Day From: Les from Hull Date: 02 Aug 06 - 10:47 AM Actually Nick there is another 'twice five miles of fertile ground' twixt us in Hull and the North Sea. And if you're claiming that God owns Lancashire you'll need an apostrophe in there. The way you've got it you've a multiplicity of gods (no more than we could expect - that's why our kid's over there doin' missionary work). |

Subject: RE: HAPPY Yorkshire Day From: GUEST,the Dewsbury Sage Date: 03 Aug 06 - 03:32 AM if global warming continues, Hull will soon be a tidal beach with high water mark near Leeds. Thinking Yorkies should mobilise and reposess the lost enclaves of Dent, Saddleworth, Barnoldswick, Kellbrook, Earby etc. As compensation the Lankies could take back their former posessions on the north side of Morecambe Bay and so on. |
|
Subject: RE: HAPPY Yorkshire Day From: Les from Hull Date: 03 Aug 06 - 09:04 AM Committed Yorkies have never given up those enclaves (actually they are border areas rather than enclaves). We still regard the traditional borders of the county as Yorkshire. Administrative Areas are different. Humberside was a County Council covering part of Yorkshire and part of Lincolnshire and was never going to change our proud traditions. Same for the Lancies - see the website clickies. There used to be a href="http://hullshire.quickseek.com/">Hullshire administrative area And, of course, the River Humber (too thick to drink, too thin to plough) provides us with lovely tidal beaches here in Hull. It's just that mud hasn't really caught on yet! |

Subject: RE: HAPPY Yorkshire Day From: Liz the Squeak Date: 03 Aug 06 - 03:49 PM I spent the day at work readdressing and transferring 104 files/computer records to Sunny Skipton... I could type the blasted address out blindfold and in my sleep. I even dreamed of 't Grange last night! All 104 had the same name, just a different number after it... oh joy. LTS |

Subject: RE: HAPPY Yorkshire Day From: Geoff the Duck Date: 04 Aug 06 - 02:55 PM Soldier Boy, I ouhgt to point out that Saddleworth is a part of Yorkshire. It was because of confusions caused during and by local government reorganisations that the Ridings Society was founded. Yorkshire day was then instituted to celebrate the true boundaries of this, England's largest county. It is in part explained in The Yorkshire Code (I think it translates as "Bugger Da Vinci!"). It is also explained by The Association of British Counties, who point out that other peoples' counties have been subjected to confusion over boundaries. Essentially Yorkshire (and all the other historic counties -insert name here.....) is still Yorkshire (or insert name....) and will continue to be despite any fleeting administration reorganisations. Quack! Geoff the Duck. |
