You'll do better to play A7 instead of Am, and, instead of the Fm, play F#diminished, or play a B7 with your index finger on the low E string, second fret(which is essetially the same).

First section of Keep on trucking
CG7/A7/D7G7/C
CG7/A7/D7/C
C/C7
F/then you have a choice here either D7 or move the f shape up three frets to Aflat, or cover the first 4 strings, which may be construed Fminor of Aflat
CG7/A7/D7G/C

middle section

E-E7 by means of little finger on third fret of 3nd string whlist still holding down E chord/Am-Am(with little finger flipped on to 3rd fret of 6th string)
D7/D7
G/G

repeat first section

also see Ralph McTells My Baby keeps staying out all night long for same Keep on trucking chord sequence, for variation on how to pick.

Keep on trucking!

The original version of this song is Blind Boy Fuller's--he called it "Truckin' My Blues Away", and recorded again as "What's that Smell Like Fish?" check his version(s) out if you want to know how to play it--failing that, listen to "Alice's Restaurant"--Arlo's famous guitar part was...well...used by Fuller first:-)

Everyone is saying the song starts in C....only with a capo perhaps. but if you're playing with the guitar open its

E-B-C#-C#-B-E    for the main part of the song then it goes E-E7-A-A7, then back again.

then the "break down" is E7-C#m-F#m-B

Well obviously all songs can be played in all keys. The thing about the C and G key in standard tuning with the keep on trucking sequence - you get that funky alternating bass - plus the chance to do hammer ons with your fingers of the right and the thumb of the left hand. And that wonderful slur on the D on the 2nd string whilst playing the F chord!

If you want that open string sound that you can get with E. Look also at playing with an open D or E tuning. It harmonises nicely with someone playing the key of C standard tuning capo-ed at the fourth.
