Subject: Lyr Req: Songs About Feet From: Azizi Date: 12 Feb 07 - 10:46 PM Don't ask. I'm really not sure why, but it occurred to me to wonder what songs -folk and otherwise have been sung about feet... big feet, small feet, feet with shoes on or off, smelly feet, dirty feet, clean feet etc etc etc. Is a list of songs about feet an important matter? No. Could a list of songs about feet be interesting & fun? I think so. And so I step out in a new thread with the hope that these feet won't fail me now. Join in if you're boots are made for walkin! |

Here's two examples from Talley's "Negro Folk Songs"-one of them makes reference to being shoeless, and the other-well, I'm sharing because it's related to this subject, and I believe it merits inclusion in a Mudcat music thread: I'M A "ROUND-TOWN" GENTLEMAN I Hain't no wagon, han'nt no dray, Jes come to down wid a load o' hay. I believe that it is of African American origin, but I'm not sure of that. The leader is supposed to add other rhyming verses using the same formula. I've used this song in children's after-school and summer programming and added other verses such as "Well, you stop right still/cock a doodle doodle doo/and you turn around/cockadoodle doodle doo/ and you touch the ground etc; "Put your hands in the air cock a doodle doodle doo/and wave them them up there" and "Put your hand on your nose and touch your toes." etc. "Let your right foot slip" is performed to the beat by pointing your right toe in front of you one step and then pointing it in back. I've found this movement mentioned in some early 20th century Afrian American dance songs {none of which I can think of now}. |

She'd sit on a stool while she sang it, rub her feet, and wince with pain, giving the impression that her feet really did hurt. (In other words, she was acting as well as singing.) It must have really impressed me as a child to make me remember it after all these years. But I can't remember the title, or any of the words! I've looked at a list of songs that Pearl Bailey recorded at Allmusic.com, but nothing rings a bell. Does anyone else remember this? |
