Subject: ADD: Sindbad the Sailor (from Popeye) From: Joe Offer Date: 09 May 17 - 12:48 AM SINDBAD THE SAILOR [From the cartoon film "Popeye The Sailor Meets Sindbad The Sailor" (1936)] (Sammy Timberg / Bob Rothberg / Sammy Lerner) Jack Mercer as Popeye & Gus Wickie as Sindbad - 1936 SINDBAD: I'm Sindbad the Sailor, so hearty and hale I live on an island on the back of a whale It's a whale of an island, that's not a bad joke Its lord and its master is this handsome bloke Who's the most remarkable extraordinary fellow? Sindbad the Sailor! I scare all creation on land or on sea But talk about women, they all fall for me I take my adventures wherever they're found I don't wanta brag, folks, but I've been around Who's the most phenomenal extra-special kind of fellow? Sindbad the Sailor! From the Valley of Serpents these diamonds I took I cleaned out those serpents with one dirty look! Now look at this monster, so strong and so huge He'd frighten King Kong, but he's only my stooge The capture of Boola for me was just fun Whoever said two heads were better than one, hah-hah Who's the most phenomenal extraordinary fellow? (Youse! Sindbads the Sailor!) On one of my travels, I ran into this Now there was a thrill I'd be sorry to miss He spread out his wings, and the sunlight grew dim He took me in his feet, but I ran off with him Who's the most remarkable extraordinary fellow? Sindbad the Sailor! Who's the most phenomenal extra-special kind of fellow? Sindbad the Sailor! I'm afraid of nobody under the sun All I say is "Boo!" and my enemies run! Who's the most remarkable extraordinary fellow? POPEYE: It's Popeye the sailor man! SINDBAD: Who? POPEYE: Popeye the sailor man I'm strong to the finich 'Cause I eats me spinach I'm Popeye the sailor man I'm one tough gazookas Which hates all palookas What ain't on the up and square I biffs and I boffs 'em And always outroughs 'em But none of 'em gets nowhere If anyone dasses to risk me fisks It's 'Bop!' and it's 'Wham!', understand? So keep good behav'our That's your one lifesaver With Popeye the sailor man I'm Popeye the sailor man Popeye the sailor man I'm strong to the finich 'Cause I eats me spinach I'm Popeye the swag whaler man! Who's the most remarkable extraordinary fellah? (You, Popeye the Sailor!) Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Popeye The Sailor Man From: Senoufou Date: 08 May 17 - 10:04 AM I've been looking this up, and according to Wikipedia, the first animated Popeye cartoons were created in 1933!! I suppose his little song was to encourage children to eat up their spinach. However we always loved our spinach anyway, and never minded eating it. It didn't make us as strong as Popeye though. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Popeye The Sailor Man From: meself Date: 07 May 17 - 02:10 PM "on a screen about one foot square" We had a TV like that - even smaller, probably - till after I'd grown up and left home. It was bought in the '50s - they made'm to last, then. Anyway, one of the local children, from a bit of a rough home, was quoted as telling his parents that our TV was "so goddamn small, you have to have to stand in a line and take turns watching it!" |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Popeye The Sailor Man From: Senoufou Date: 07 May 17 - 01:36 PM My husband says Popeye was broadcast in Ivory Coast many, many years ago, dubbed in French. 'Popeye Le Matelot'. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Popeye The Sailor Man From: banjoman Date: 07 May 17 - 06:30 AM I'm Popeye the sailor man I come from the Isle of Man I bought a piana(o) for one & a tanner I'm Popeye the sailor man |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Popeye The Sailor Man From: Steve Gardham Date: 07 May 17 - 04:34 AM Talking about tempo of the song this could vary on the cartoon itself and in our versions. When Popeye was singing the verse it went at a steady pace and would even slow down to deliver the last few lines at the end of the cartoon, with the toot toot on his pipe. However the tune was also played very fast and in a staccato way when the exciting action was taking place, and it was at this pace that we often sang the parodies. Remember Bluto's and Olive's version of the bawdy song 'Abraham Brown', 'Barnacle Bill the Sailor'? What a pair of voices! Oh, and Olive's 'I want a clean shaven man'. Bluto and Popeye scrapping to get a decent shave because of Olive's song and at the end she walks away with a naval officer with a big bushy beard. Those were the days! Wimpy, Swee'pea, the Goonies, Abu Hassan..... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Popeye The Sailor Man From: Senoufou Date: 07 May 17 - 03:11 AM This thread is making me laugh! Gallus Moll, my Father would have given you a sharp slap too! Absolute scream!! We sang these in the early fifties Gargoyle, in W London. (It was called Middlesex then) Re the ice-cream vans, the tune always started off very fast, then got slower and slower until it was almost like a dirge. I suppose it was on some wind-up mechanism (no technology then!) Of course, we revelled in singing Popeye at breakneck speed, or extremely slowly, depending on where the ice-cream man was with his music box. The slap was always delivered at the same speed though - rapidly! We had no TV, but 'Auntie'-Poppy-down-the-road had bought one for the Coronation, and we used to go before tea-time to sit with her two horrible little boys to watch Children's Hour, and that's where we first watched Popeye the Sailor Man. (black-and-white of course, on a screen about one foot square) |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Popeye The Sailor Man From: Steve Gardham Date: 06 May 17 - 01:32 PM Surely there must already be a thread on this one. The earliest one I heard in the 50s was I'm Popeye... I live in a caravan I opened the door And I fell through the floor I'm P.... We also sang the 'I love to go swimmin with all the bare women' verse, probably others. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Popeye The Sailor Man From: Senoufou Date: 06 May 17 - 06:21 AM (Oh dear! Fond memories of being a Very Naughty Girl aged about nine!) I'm Popeye the sailor man. I live in a jar of jam. The jam is so sticky It sticks to my dicky. I'm Popeye the sailor man. I'm Popeye the sailor man. I live in a caravan. There's a hole in the middle for Popeye to piddle. I'm Popeye the sailor man. The ice-cream vans round our way always played this tune. Cue for my sister and I, in fits of giggles, to start up with rude parodies. (Followed by a sharp slap from Dad!) |

Who's that knocking at my door, etc... Open the door, you... whore, it's Barnacle Bill the Sailor. Will you take me to the dance, etc... To hell with the dance, and take off your pants, it's Barnacle Bill... and so on. I believe it was Dr. Dirty (John Valby) who recorded it. Geez, I hate knowing crap like that. |

Subject: RE: Lyrics for Popeye the Sailor From: Banjer Date: 21 Feb 99 - 08:44 PM My Lord!!! I thought at the beginning of this thread that I had some weird sites to share myself, BUT, after getting past Mike Billo's "Marshmallow Bunny Survival Tests" I'll just go back to my corner and sit down. How can one follow such an act? Go look, it's actually there, just like he says......Some folks just have toooooo much time on their hands....... |
Subject: RE: Lyrics for Popeye the Sailor From: Mike Billo Date: 21 Feb 99 - 05:55 PM Well, I've been holding off on contributing this for fear of being regarded as too weird, but I now see that that's not much of a consideration on the Mudcat(ha ha). The most bizarre site I've found on the web is the "Marshmallow Bunny Survival Tests" page where they subject marshmallow bunnies(the kind you buy at easter) to laser blasts, electrocutions, and flame throwers, then document the results under laboratory conditions its at http://www.pcola.gulf.net/~irving/bunnies/ You have to see this one to believe it! |
Subject: RE: Lyrics for Popeye the Sailor From: da da dum Date: 21 Feb 99 - 03:36 PM RS - He's a great composer, who inspired Beethoven's fifth Symphony with the immortal opening line: Da da da Dum And I think it was a descendant of his who composed the famous theme to TV's Dragnet: Dumm, da dum dum |
Subject: RE: Tune of Popeye the Sailor From: RS Date: 21 Feb 99 - 03:03 PM Well, after humming this over & over to see what we could come up with, my kids & I have decided that the original tune is definitely that of the famous & immortal song:
Da da da da da, da dum. Now if we could only figure out the composer, we'd be all set! - RS |

Intrigued, I tuned in and, yup, you guessed it: a website dedicated to those old flexible plastic, one color, six posed toy soldiers like you used to get in the Sears Christmas catalog! They even had photographs of mock battles around electric planes--all set up on kitchen tables and living room floors. Remember them, guys? I laugh at NO hobbies, but this one did bring a smile to my face. |
