Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: John MacKenzie Date: 20 Nov 05 - 09:32 AM I too have added a few new Getaway piccies to the Flickr thread. HERE Only the first 3and a half pages are Getaway, the rest are other things and festivals. Just to say again how much I enjoyed the whole Getaway experience, even people putting $50 a bottle malt whisky in their coffee ☺ {I forgives ya mate!} So many lovely people and so much good music, I wish I had come over a few days earlier to acclimatise, as I couldn't stay up long enough to join in the late sessions. Poor old bugger!! I hear you cry; don't I?? Giok. |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Ebbie Date: 15 Nov 05 - 08:32 PM LOL In printing another batch of CD indexes just now, I found a HUGE mistake! Most sorry, Tone Deaf Dave, but in one song, here's what I listed: Four Nights Drunk (David Diamond (Tone Deaf Drunk) with Judy Cook. You just can't win, can you!! (Incidentally, I never heard a less appropriate moniker. Don't know about the 'drunk' part though. lol) Ebbie hahhahhahah |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Bobert Date: 15 Nov 05 - 08:30 PM Just got home from a long two day trip to North Carolina and found Ebbie's CD in the mail box... Listening to it now... The first song is one I asked Ken Shotz to record for me entitled "Country Blues" and I ain't too sure who wrote it but I heard him do it last year and knew I had to have it... The what I'm listenin' to now is my blues workshop and evrybody soundin' real good... Thanks "everybody" and thanks Ebbie... Oh, Leadfingers on now... Later... BObert |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Ebbie Date: 15 Nov 05 - 04:50 PM My pleasure, for sure. Which is why I came to the conclusion that this has been my treat. Allan C and I discussed it a bit - he did the same thing (and more than once) a few years ago - and he knows just what I mean when I say that doing it - and listening repeatedly to the recordings - lifted my spirits tremendously. So- you are very welcome. |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Ferrara Date: 15 Nov 05 - 01:26 PM Oh, the recordings are splendid! I love them! Well, I love the one I've listened to so far. KT, it is Disk #3, and starts with your concert. Oh, it is lovely music. The incredible thing from my point of view is that, except for the concerts, I missed every single workshop and mini that Ebbie recorded, either because it was too far to walk, I had a conflict, or I had to rest at that hour. Every year we set up all these sessions, and they all look so appealing. Well, if we didn't think they were good, we wouldn't schedule them, would we? So it is painful to miss so many things, as you all know. Somehow Ebbie managed to give me the experience of the "rest of the Getaway," the parts I really wanted to see but missed for one reason or another. Not all of it, of course! We needed an Ebbie clone or two :-) But I was on cloud 9 yesterday hearing all that grand music. Thank you, Ebbie. For all your work, and your generous sharing. I'm going to add a couple comments to the set lists threads if I can locate them. I believe Barry Finn sang "Working on a Building" in the Rousing Gospel. Hunter Jones led "Somebody Touched Me." He and his wife Peggy have been mainstays of the monthly FSGW Gospel Sing for many years, and Hunter has co-led the Getaway Gospel workshop in the past. It feels like Christmas morning, Ebbie, with a lot more presents still to be unwrapped. (9 CD's! Wow. Treasure trove.) |

Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: KT Date: 15 Nov 05 - 03:21 AM Nice pics, Jacqui! I've been listening to the Getaway recordings made by Ebbie. What a delight to once again, hear the voices of the Getaway goers! Today, as I was driving to work, Micca was entertaining me with his version of (I think it's called ) "Just the Way You look Tonight." I was in the car by myself laughing hysterically! I got more than a few odd looks from other drivers. Definitely one of those, "had to be there" times. Makes me so happy to hear it all again, and grateful to have been a part of it! Thanks so much Ebbie!! KT |

Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Charlie Baum Date: 10 Nov 05 - 12:14 AM We had about 170-175 attendees at this year's Getaway. Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Amos Date: 04 Nov 05 - 05:48 PM I get complacent about being enthusiastic and a bit wild around the edges. I like it that way and I intend to preserve the dynamic, volatile status quo!! LOL A |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Bill D Date: 04 Nov 05 - 05:32 PM "Songs from the Shower" was one of a number of titles for a series..(0h, 20 or so years) of workshops 'led' by our own Jonathan Eberhart, who loved to wheedle out of folks the songs they used to know and/or sing, in the shower, while washing dishes, as kids riding the back seat...etc. They ranged from kids playground songs to commercials to bits of ballads with strange twists...to silly parodies unique to YOUR family. Jon had a way of making this exercise a bit different every time it was done and it was always ummmmm...'interesting', if not exactly traditional in the purist sense. I went to a few of them, always had fun, and didn't ruin my status as a "purist snob" TOO badly! ☺ No doubt we could do something with the concept again, whether as part of "Do-wop" or as a general catch-all like Jon did it, though not with his panaché...it's an idea, and we have 11 months or so to ponder.... (remember, at the new camp we are promised hot showers, heated cabins, and shorter, level walks next year! I hope that doesn't lull everyone into dull, conservative complacency....fat chance, huh?) |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Charlie Baum Date: 04 Nov 05 - 04:37 PM Amos--We have a large wheelchair-accessible shower at home, and I've had six of us in there simultaneously (fully clothed) singing Balkan songs. |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Dani Date: 04 Nov 05 - 04:28 PM Last year when there was no hot water, I sang like a bird. Or screeched. This year, we had hot water. Does that have something to do with the fact that they finally segregated us by gender? No guys, now we got hot water and working shower curtains? Hmmmm.... Dani |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: MMario Date: 04 Nov 05 - 04:09 PM I had hot water and I showered - but when you shower approx two hours after the others in your cabin went to sleep - you don't sing if ou want to live. |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Ferrara Date: 04 Nov 05 - 04:04 PM That's "Songs From the Shower," not "Songs in the Shower, Amos! In about 1956, I was playing "oldies" for a friend's mother and we were singing duets. (The only one I specifically remember, because it was new to me, was "It's a Sin to Tell a Lie.") She said to me, "We think of these songs as classics, but I bet in 20 years or so, the rock and roll songs that you kids are dancing to will be considered classics." A wise lady. |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Amos Date: 04 Nov 05 - 03:55 PM I had hot water, and I took a shower. But there was no-one there to hear me sing, or to sing to me. I guess it was the weird hours, eh? A |

Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: kendall Date: 04 Nov 05 - 10:50 AM What will the kids of today be singing in 50 years? Can't you just picture them all arounf the old upright synthiser, trying to remember two words from Twisted Sister? |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: MMario Date: 04 Nov 05 - 10:40 AM well - look at the way TV theme songs and jingles have crept their way into campsongs etc. |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Ebbie Date: 04 Nov 05 - 10:29 AM I can admit that I listened to L.L.Cool once through one whole 'song'- and I liked the spirit of the guy. Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Amos Date: 04 Nov 05 - 08:36 AM How many people can you fit in one shower, though? Or do you have a bank of them lined up for this? Do the performers have to actually be showering while they sing? This is making me nervous... lol A |
