Well... hard to come up with a top moment, it was all, really extrodinary... I'm going to put up a post about a Mucat Flicker page... took lots of video and will soon have screan grabs. I am nurcing rather bad tendonitis, as Skipjack (Greg) and I ran all over New York yesterday, great fellow... well met...
Oh the many wonderful faces and voice to put on these friends I knew so well for so long by their posts...
But, I think, one of the most magic moments with all the sound, wonderful sound, as a silent time when fellow Friends and friends of other faiths, had a moment to wait together, in a Quaker meeting, in a house that was a stop on the underground railroad,
love to all

WOW! It sounds like everybody had quite a time. I'm sorry that Ingrid and I couldn't be there with you. Our wedding, however, came off with out a(ny kind of normal) hitch. At some point I'll post the story of how we turned te church into a vaudeville theater.

Glad to hear that everyone enjoyed it. I'm focusing on getting there next year for sure.

Wonderful, wonderful weekend. Hear are a few of my favorite memories.

The wonderful times started Wednesday night when George and Vanessa (El Greko and La Inglessa) came to my home to stay with me before we went to the Getaway.

Thursday night there was a music party at the home of Fortunato and Suzette with musicians and singers from both sides of the pond. I didn't believe that the Getaway could be any better than that until we got there.

The musicians I heard and played with were so, so good. It was a humbling and exciting experience for me.

All the squeezebox players.

Meeting so many Mudcatters that I only knew through correspondence: Carol C, Skip Jack, Bat Goddess, Curmudgeon, Catsphiddle, Charlie Noble, Amos, Giok, Ebbie from Juneau, Leadfingers, Skarpi, and lots of others whose names escape me now.

Seeing and hearing Barry Finn. Barry, you've lost some weight, but your voice and your spirit were very strong. I'm so glad.

Seeing people I've seen at some Getaways, but not last year's, notably Claymore, Keith and some of the Shellbacks.

Warm, sunny weather.

Lots more wonderful people. I'll write about more of them later. I'm going to work on getting my photos online.

This was my first Getaway and, since I am not from anywhere near Washington, I thank all of FSGW for running such a wonderful event! I never felt like a stranger, though; everyone was so welcoming, from Charlie and Judy beforehand, right through the folks who encourage non-singers to sing and the guys who let me hang in their cabin to four a.m. sharing songs and the ones who invited me to share silent contemplation to start the day, to being bade safe home when I had to leave early. Of course it was great to see the folks I had already met and to meet in person folks I only knew online. (And a kick when Big Mick and company escorted Skarpi in to start introducing him to folks and we already knew each other.) Highlights? Way too many to sort yet.....

WE just got back after a sterling 600 mile drive straight through by the Cap'n. He's just retired to bed for a well deserved rest. Before the weekend I don't think that he would have contemplated doing that drive - the Getaway has a mighty powerful effect!

WE had a wonderful weekend, full of music and good friends old and new. The time was nowhere near long enough to really get to spend as much time as we would have liked with so many special people and it seems a mighty long time to wait for the next Getaway!

The high point of my weekend had to be watching Geoff the Duck's solo performance of Duelling Banjoes on mini banjo and kazoo. This has to be seen to be believed - the man's a flipping genius!

Thanks to the lovely ladies who put a crazy idea into practice on Saturday night and to Bruce for supplying the ginger again this year. Many thanks to the Getaway comitteee for giving us the opportunity to get together and here's to many more Getaways in the future!

Sayin' "see you next year" to Ebbie is worser than a thousand root canals...

Made me cry...

Sho nuff did...

There are folks who we meet that is just as real as real can be... NO, make that realer than real...

Sniff...

Ebbie is one of them rare folks... The only other person that I've met in recent years that lives up to her was Pete Seeger... An' he could learn a couple things from Ebbie...

Sniff...

Great God in heaven, Allan. Snorting whiskey through my nose HURTS!

Wait 'til they see the video....

Thank you, all, for the most wonderful and magical Getaway yet. It was good, if short, time with old friends, and so many new people to meet and sing with. Were there 3 times the number as last year? How did I miss time with so many people and STILL have a full weekend?

I especially want to thank you all for making my daughters feel welcome and comfy. They had a ball. Elena (the Elder) who HATES folk music, and is suspicious of folkies in general, said, "Mom, it's like Cheez-Wiz on sweet corn. I don't want to like it, but it likes me." Her favorite thing was Bobert's workshop: she was blown away. That's folk, too, honey!!

More later,

Dani

Home safe and sound....had to walk the dog down to the clinic to get on line to start reading about what a good time I had!

What magic! What music! What fun! And....not too terribly cold at night!

I couldn't pick a favorite moment, but I definitely have a favorite performance--Roger's Sat. Night concert song, which I assume is called something to the effect of "It Ain't No Armadillo!"

Once again, heartfelt thank you's to all who make this magic happen every year. All of you talented, scholarly, cheerful, hospitable (and did I say terrific) folks with FSGW who put this together every year and invite us to come and partake of your musical fellowship.

So many delightful people, and I'm sure I'll ramble on about many of them, but I gotta tell you, Ebbie has got the brightest, warmest look about her....like each moment is the first thing Christmas morning!

CORRECTION:

Yes, accordin' to the foxy and talented singer of chic 'n sea songs, KT, her career as a "Pedestrian" was closer to 10 minutes but I'll have to give her credit fir tryin'... Had she come to me and asked me if I wanted to be in her chick 'n sea band I'd said "Heck no" soon as I picked myself off the floor from laughin'...

(Ahhhh, heck, the laugh mighta lasted 11 minutes thereby eclipsin' KT's 10 minutes as a member of "Sidewalk Bob and the Pedestrains" as a member of KT's "Chick 'n Sea n' the Peeps" band by an entire 60 seconds!!!!)

I demand a recount!!!

(But, Bobert, you fool.... KT didn't ask you to join the "Chick 'n Sea n' the Peeps" band...)

Wel, heck, there's always next year... I'll start practicin' all my weepy chick songs right now... Like, ahhh,.....

(Well gol danged, son, you don't know no chick songs...)

Nevermind...

Got to do a bit of chaos control...

It was a fantastic weekend....even by our FSGW high standards! I will let Leadfingers give you his assessment in his own flowery terminology later..*grin*....("Leadfingers", indeed! No name has ever been less appropriate!)

Of the three I've attended, this was the first time I wasn't the only piano accordion player there (or at least the only one willing to admit to it), and it was the first time I was able to take a workshop that was relevant to the kind of music I make myself.

We had three piano accordionists, and quite a few concertina players this year. George Ward and Skipjack K8 (Greg Dunn) did a great job of leading a squeezebox workshop. Most of the attendees were concertina players, so that was the main focus of the workshop, but all of it was very interesting and informative, and everyone there got a chance to enjoy some very good concertina and piano accordion playing.

For the first time, I understand on a deep level what Jeri is talking about when she talks about her experiences with Rick Fielding as her teacher, and the special kind of relationship that a student can have with a very good teacher. At this Getaway, I was able to meet face to face, for the first time, the person I have regarded as my only accordion teacher for the last five years since I began learning how to play accordion. Of all the accordionists I've ever heard, my most favorite to listen to and learn from is Greg Dunn (Skipjack), and it was an incredible experience watching him do the things I've only heard him do prior to now, and to be able to learn from him in person rather than by just listening to tapes and communicating via internet.

It was wonderful having so many people from around the world this year. There was an incredible richness of experience hearing all of the different musical influences from so many different cultures. And it was also great to have an opportunity to add quite a few new people to my "have met in person" Mudcatter life list, and to see so many whom I've met previously once again.

Without a doubt, this Getaway was the best one I've attended so far, and I have to thank my husband, JtS, for making sure I would have the opportunity to attend this year and have these experiences.

Roger,

The weather was most cooperative this year. Friday evening was warm enough that people had song circles outside.

Workshops went very well. (Rita, the new 1 1/2 hour sessions went by quickly. I think the turnout was the largest I've seen.

Bobert's blues workshop was more like a jam than a song circle and that was great. I also enjoyed Jim Bunch and Dani's jug band workshop.

Met a new person, Mr. Schatz who is a wicked way of writing parodies.

Each year, I know more and more people and that adds to the enjoyment.

Barry Finn and his wife Justine were there. Barry is obviously still in recovery mode and he says his singing is not at 100%. However, 50% of Barry is better than many singers' 100% so it was great to hear his fine voice.

I represented Peter and Katrina Cady with two of their parodies, "Socks and a Gun" and "Momma Fried". They were much enjoyed. When are those Woodchucks coming to this.

There were many representatives from outside the US. More and more people coming from England. Leadfingers seemed to be in every workshop I attended. I think we must have very similar tastes.

I know I won't miss the hills of Ramblewood next year. Flat land sounds great to me.

Roger in Baltimore

From: Bobert

Well, well, well...

I have just gotten in after a quick 4 1/2 trip to find the P-Vine asleep and me livin' on "Getaway Time" meanin' that looks like a got a couple three hours hours 'til bed time... Ahhh, not that means sleep, 'er anythin'... Jus mean yer layin' in bed tryin' to be asleep with folks playin' music everywhere they can an' wonderin' jus' how much longer you gotta pretend the charade before ya' can legitimately venture oputta yer cabin widout bein' perceived as a party pooper who must turned in before midnight... Oh, one wouldn't want to fall into that category....

Well, I had a lotta fun an' din't want to leave tonight but the P-Vine has her anual respitory thing going and once I discovered that Ebbie and KT had a way back to D.C., I know I needed to be here to do the usual husbandly things to be syupportive, you know, like leavin' the toilet seat up....

But nuff of that hasbandly and toilet seat stuff...

Well, first of all, whilst it was good seein' everyone, especially Ebbie, KT, Amos, Kendall, Jackie, Janie, Sins, CarolC, MMario, Tinker, El Greco, Jacqui, OBU, Rita, Bill, Max, Leadfingure, JimmyT, Lonesome EJ, Dani, etc, etc., it was mighty hard leavin'... Sniff...

But heck with that husbandly, toilet seat, leavin' stuff....

First of all, CarolC ain't as big as those of you who haven't met her think... Yeah, she might whup on a few butts 'round this joint and those of you who have been on the recieving end might have a problems with this but the gal in like, ahhhhh, tiny... But sho nuff she is so get over yhe whuppin's...

Nevermind that...

Ahhhh, the higlight of the Getaway was my mini-concert...

(No,it wasn't, Bobert! Get some sleep, you poor fool...)

No, really the high point was/were:

1. Gettin' to pick up Ebbie and KT in D.C. and drive them to the Getaway inspite of turning the navigatin' over to them and endin' , yikes, in a danged long tunnel...

2. Seein' the Captain and his wife, Jacqui... They are a couple of the collest folks that I know... Okay, Kendall can be a pain in the butt... And sneaky... You all may see a piccure of me playin' his "Taylor"... Never happened... It's a photoshop fake... Ahhh, Martins rule...

3. Last night concert, while great, was capped off with a little berlisqu which was intended to bring Big Mick to his knees but seemed to have the opposite effect on the boy as he has volunteered to do another year as the "Be Very Afraid" man... Whew, I had a feeling that I was next in line... But, it would have been a wast with me since I don't unnerstand 'nuff 'bout womenz to be afraid of 'um....

5. "Most Improved Mudcatter', IMH, was El Grecko... Yeah, he has always beeen good but unemployement seems to fit him well as he delived a moving version of"________________________" a song he wrote about providin' (or not) fir his family... Very, very good...

6. BillD's lathe work are phenominal... He just keep gettin' better and better.... I bought the most beutiful piece I have evr seen him do fir the P-Vine... She is gonna love it...

7. BeardedBruce was quite the trooper this weekend as has came with enough nice dark beers to share with just about anyone who had forgotten ot just wanted to taste something better than the cheap stuff they brought...

8. Was nice seein' Max, who showed up today, lookin' fit and not all car-crashed... Actually the crash has been very becoming to him as he looked a lot better this year after the crash than last year...

9. Fir me, it was real nice to finally meet up with my "contract partner" (street term fir, "stick-man, ahhhh, street term fir, ahhhh...)here in Mudville... W@e got a few code things down so when the Bsuhites comin' messin' wid us' we can mess wid 'um even better...

10. Seriously, I was real happy with the blues workshop that I faciliatted... The mix of folks was real nice and I think, other than electric Chicago blues, the folks who came and contributed probalably did as nice a job of presenting a cross-swection of acoustic blues as could be found anywhere... A special thanks to Dick Greenhouse and Roger...

Now fir the bad parts:

1. Sargeant "BillY" Ballbuster, who is the manager of Camp Rumbleweed, din't seem like a happy camp leader... On Friday night he lectured us like we was school kids about this 'n that and my-inurance-company-don't-like-thi'n-that... And don't put no cigaratte butts in wrong place 'er our "undeerstaffed" staff will have to pick 'um up and "We don't like pickin' yer butts up"... Whoof, whoof, whoof... Guy gave me th4 creeps... Maybe he's mad cause we comin' back next year... I don't know... Think he could use a little couch time witha good theapist... Maybe a little of that polymorphorse perverse guilt??? I don't know??? Maybe just needs to get laid??? (Did you look at this guy, Bobert???) Yeah, that's prolly it...

2. Had to fire KT as a potential "Pedestrain" from my "Sidewalk Bob and the Pedestrains" band 4 minutes into the audtion.... Sniff... Felt real bad about that one since I hired on a harp player 2 mintues into thwe same audition...

3. There ain't Tastee Feeze in Harvey 'n Garce, Md...

That's 'bout wraps it up fir now...

Bobert
