Subject: RE: Summer's Here!! From: Margo Date: 11 Jul 99 - 07:10 PM Ah yes, Andreas. That reminds me of my favorite quote from a "Star Trek" episode, where an alien calls humans "Ugly bags of mostly water"! Llanfair, we have a heat pump, which is a system for either heating or cooling. It works well. And even for us here in Vancouver Washington (a three hour drive south of Seattle) it has gotten plenty hot. The Pacific northwest gets lots of moisture, which accounts for our lush surroundings. But I'll tell you, as welcome as the warm weather is, we would be complaining had we no air conditioning. (Fickle, aren't we?) Margarita |
Subject: RE: Summer's Here!! From: The Shambles Date: 11 Jul 99 - 05:28 PM I like the summer. It makes the plain, attractive. The attractive, beautiful. And the beautiful, absolutly stunning! |
Subject: RE: Summer's Here!! From: MudGuard Date: 11 Jul 99 - 02:27 AM Joe, when I remember my biology lessons correctly, you are more than 75% water. |
Subject: RE: Summer's Here!! From: Barbara Date: 11 Jul 99 - 02:21 AM A swamp cooler is an air conditioner where the cooling power is provided by water, rather than a refrigerant. Around here at festivals and outdoor events in the summer people sometimes sell these necktie things that are a tube of fabric filled with the little beads that they put in disposable diapers (there's an official name for them, but I don't remember it) You soak the neck thing in cold water till the beads have all soaked up, and then tie it around your neck. Instant cooling. Blessings, Barbara, and sure, Alison, take as much heat as you want, we've got extra. |
Subject: RE: Summer's Here!! From: alison Date: 11 Jul 99 - 01:08 AM this isn't fair... send me some heat..... it's winter here and it's COLD..... admittedly in this sort of temperature in Ireland I would have been sunbathing.. but in Australia.. it's cold!!!!! slainte alison |
Subject: RE: Summer's Here!! From: Dave Swan Date: 10 Jul 99 - 06:26 PM I don't know who said it first, but it is true that the temperature of a room can be estimated by the length of a sleeping cat. This time of year we're seeing cats in the 1.5 to 2 cat range. |
Subject: RE: Summer's Here!! From: Penny S. Date: 10 Jul 99 - 06:23 PM Barbara, what is a swamp cooler? I think I need one. And thanks for mentioning the mist sprayer. I used on in the last heatwave, and had forgotten about it. One of the problems over here - methods of dealing with extreme weather can never become a habit. Penny |

Subject: RE: Summer's Here!! From: Barbara Date: 10 Jul 99 - 12:01 PM Having passed the RV place on my way out of town yesterday, I can tell you that at 5:30 last night it was 103F or 39C there, and hot it was, too. This is unusually warm for us here in western Oregon. Before air conditioning, folks here used a fan or more in every room, and sat in front of them with little or nothing on drinking cold drinks of choice. One of my college days cheap tricks (before car air conditioning) was to take along a spray mist bottle and squirt myself down every so often. This works particularly well in a breeze. One of the variants of a swamp cooler involves setting up sprinklers on the roof to keep the house cool. Blessings, Barbara |
Subject: RE: Summer's Here!! From: Llanfair Date: 10 Jul 99 - 10:44 AM I'm always getting confused with farenheit and celsius(whatever) I'm afraid us wrinklies still think in old money.(This is a British reference to 1971 when we went decimal).....Yards and Metres are still a problem, too. It's still bloody hot!!!!!! My garden is up a hillside, so I do catch the breezes when I'm out there, but only mad dogs and English people go out in the midday sun!!!! I shall spend the evening hosing the garden, the dogs, the geese and me with delicious cold water. Bliss. Bron. |
Subject: RE: Summer's Here!! From: annamill Date: 10 Jul 99 - 08:59 AM That's a good one, Harpgirl. Yesterday, though warm, we had some good winds. I keep my bedroom windows open at night to hear the river and our bed is right by the windows. Yesterday the sound of the wind woke me and I lifted my head to see. There up in the wind was a poor little tern beating it's wings madly and going nowhere. Just sitting there in the air, in one spot. I think if he stopped beating his wings he would have been blown backward toward NY. Reminded me of the white queen in "Through the Looking Glass". Had to keep running just to stay where she was. It's a wonderful morning, but I think we're in for a storm. I just put on coffee and Glenn has gone to weed the garden of an older friend of ours. So here I am at the Mudcat. HAWD. Love, annap |
Subject: RE: Summer's Here!! From: harpgirl Date: 10 Jul 99 - 07:39 AM ...I can take the heat in Florida...it's the wind that gets me...in fact during the last hurricane season the wind was so strong my chickens laid the same eggs six times in a row! harpy |
Subject: RE: Summer's Here!! From: Joe Offer Date: 10 Jul 99 - 04:13 AM Well, Andreas, I have to say that from the standpoint of human comfort (or lack thereof), the Fahrenheit scale makes some sense. 100 degrees Fahrenheit is miserable. So is Zero. From the standpoint of water, Celsius makes more sense because freezing and boiling are very important events in the life of a drop of water - but I'm not water, so why should I care?? (grin) -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Summer's Here!! From: MudGuard Date: 10 Jul 99 - 04:00 AM 100 degrees?!?!? So water is boiling everywhere?!?!?! (as water boils at about 99 degrees Celsius) Or do you mean degrees Kelvin?!?!? Then everything would be deeply frozen (except Helium). Or do you mean these old, nonmetic degrees Fahrenheit that nobody is using anymore??? |
Subject: RE: Summer's Here!! From: Peter T. Date: 09 Jul 99 - 05:52 PM Bron, another alternative to beating the heat in Britain is to do something ghastly. The cold looks freeze you faster than anything else (I spent many years in England as a colonial. Brrrrrrr). (joke) yours, Peter T. |
Subject: RE: Summer's Here!! From: Bert Date: 09 Jul 99 - 05:38 PM Llanfair: In Bahrain, when it gets too hot, the locals sleep on the roof in wet sheets. Of course they have flat roofs ou there. I guess you'd slide off the slates in Wales. Ah well, nemmind, 'twas just a thought. Bert. |
Subject: RE: Summer's Here!! From: Llanfair Date: 09 Jul 99 - 05:26 PM Oh, Matthew B, your notion sounds really cool, but my days of larking about in my birthday suit are well and truly numbered. Tony, I like the song, isn't it frustrating when we can't hear the tune. Bron. |
Subject: RE: Summer's Here!! From: Bill D Date: 09 Jul 99 - 05:25 PM well, some over here cope just fine...and some don't.(and in Philadelphia, there have been many deaths due to heat!)...and in Seattle, it has been cool and damp a lot...this is a BIG place...(We in Wash. D.C. have been pretty hot, but we expect it, and the A.C. runs most of the day...) and as to beer...*grin*...good beer is meant to be just cool...cheap stuff has to be ice cold to be tolerable at all...much good English ale is wasted if you ice it too much... |
Subject: RE: Summer's Here!! From: Tony Burns Date: 09 Jul 99 - 04:30 PM With all this talk of beer I just have to post this song. If the chords don't seem to line up properly try copying to your favourite word processor and using a fixed font like courier 10.
I Like Beer E A E
My wife often frowns when we're out on the town Chorus...

Subject: RE: Summer's Here!! From: Llanfair Date: 09 Jul 99 - 04:30 PM Oh, Annap, I wish!!!!!!!I'm really envious about your gathering as well!!. The beer solution is OK, but I'm not very good with alcohol. And have you any idea what air conditioning costs over here!!, specially when you only need it for two weeks every four years!!! Any more ideas. Oh yes, the coast is only 30 miles away, but on a Friday evening, the entire population of Birmingham and the West Midlands is heading that way, and travel nose to tail all the way......we don't go out of the town on Fridays, we can't!!!!!! Bron..hot and sweaty, but smiling now. |
Subject: RE: Summer's Here!! From: Matthew B. Date: 09 Jul 99 - 04:22 PM Aaak! Those typos. Please read: My favorite way of beating the heat is mutually feeding each other watermeon in the nude. |

Subject: RE: Summer's Here!! From: annamill Date: 09 Jul 99 - 04:19 PM Hey Bron, Hop on a plane and come spend some time here. I'll show you how we cope! I'll have the Pina~ Colodas waiting. annap |
Subject: RE: Summer's Here!! From: SeanM Date: 09 Jul 99 - 04:17 PM Hey Bert! You forgot that it's also a cure for the Spring Fever and Autumn Dolldrums... Beer, the other, other, other white meat... M |
Subject: RE: Summer's Here!! From: annamill Date: 09 Jul 99 - 04:16 PM AIR CONDITIONING, PINA COLODAS, THE BEACH, and beer. annap, who's about to go home and enjoy all those things for the weekend. Hey, guess what. I have every Monday off for the rest of the summer, plus two weeks in August. Isn't that great? Love, annap |
Subject: RE: Summer's Here!! From: Bert Date: 09 Jul 99 - 04:06 PM Yes Joe has it right. BEER is the answer. As an Ex-Limey I can tell you that it doesn't matter whether it's ice cold or at cellar temperature. It's the quantity that counts. Bert. PS. The same remedy works in winter as well. |
Subject: RE: Summer's Here!! From: Joe Offer Date: 09 Jul 99 - 03:58 PM Well, if you folks over there would learn to drink your beer cold, you might learn to enjoy hot weather....(grin) -Joe Offer- |
Subject: Summer's Here!! From: Llanfair Date: 09 Jul 99 - 03:55 PM Annap mentioned in her thread that they are basking in temperatures of 100 degrees. I've mentioned before that in Britain, we don't have a climate, we have weather, and it always catches us out. Right now it is hot, very hot, and most of us can't cope with it. I'm very fair skinned, so I have to lie down in a darkened room till it goes away. The tar is melting on the roads, and the TV is subject to atmospherics, whatever they are. How do you people in the USA cope. When it snows here, everything grinds to a halt, and now it's hot, we're all complaining. What are we doing wrong? Hot and Sweaty Bron. |
