Subject: RE: Happy St. George's Day. From: Senoufou Date: 24 Apr 22 - 02:29 AM Large flagpoles seem to be the latest fashion in my village. Several have been erected recently, mostly by ex-servicemen. But opposite my house, a workman arrived and put in place a giant pole, then proceeded to hoist a huge Union Flag, but upside down! I hurried across and pointed out that this was a distress signal, and showed him how to put the broad white stripe at the top nearest the pole. He then hoisted below it a flag of St George (red cross on a white background) according to his instructions from the owners, who were out. I nearly fell over when he asked me, "Is this the Polish flag?" He seemed never to have heard of St George. Honestly, I knew this at the age of seven when in the Brownies! Tut tut eh? |
Subject: RE: Happy St. George's Day. From: Steve Shaw Date: 23 Apr 22 - 05:31 PM I think I used to do pub crawls from Horwich to Bolton in the sixties. We never made it as far as Bolton town centre... St George's Day is the one day on which you pick dandelions to make dandelion wine. Be prepared to change the bedsheets at frequent intervals. |
