Hey-- it sounds like you have gotten some good news! this is great and I am really happy for you and your mother! I hope you will forgive me in advance for proceeding to specific advice based on one person's experience with MY mother; she was 83 when diagnosed with lung cancer had smoked for 50 years, and the bill came due. She took radiation only, which knocked it back, and had about 2 good years, went downhill very quickly at the end and died 2 years 2 months after original diagnosis, when tumor was originally 3 cm diamter squamous cell carcinoma.
I assume your mother to be somewhat younger than Mom was when seh found out and able to tolerate surgery, based on all those strenuous years as a dancer.
Go for the surgery. There is NO good chemo for lung cancers, and radiation only knocks it back for a time. Those are delaying actions only. Go fot the cure, and accept the quality of life willbe compromised (you won't have as much energy with only one lung working instead of two and less oxygen intake)
There may be very good reasons why this would not be the right decision for your mother-- but if she is 60 and in good health, it's worth discomfort and cutting your chest open to buy what could be another 20 good years. HMMV. For what it's worth, we are (obviously) thinking about you and your mother and hoping this story has a good outcome. Please tell her it's not hopeless unless she gives up!

We will contiunue to hold you all in the Light and give thanks for the successful outcome of the chemo and radiation.

Just re-read my last post. 2nd paragraph, "That is want," should read "That is what I want."

Also, I just got a call from my Mom and her doctor called her to tell her that her CAT scan had been officially declared clean. She said that tomorrow she goes in to be "marked" for her radiation. She starts chemo & radiation next Thursday.

Thanks for all of the prayers!

Hey MudCatters!

More good news from Hamburger Hill. I went home Sunday to visit my Mom (with a girl I have been seeing for a while. First time meeting the parent. Always a touch & go operation, but they like each other, so all is well.)

My Mom happened to casually mention that her tumors were encapsulated, which anyone who has been thru this struggle knows is a very good thing. Sadly, due to their location, they are still not "resectable," in other words they can't just take out the tumors. They would have to remove the whole lung. That is want, but she still wants to go the chemo/radiation route. But it is her battle, so she must fight it as she see fit. She is open to the idea of removing the lung, but she doesn't want to stop working or dancing. I can't say as I blame her.

The other good news is that she went for a CAT scan of her head this AM. She told me Sunday that this kind of cancer moves readily into the brain. So she wanted to get it checked out. They still want to have a neurologist give the scan the once over to be 100% sure, but the unofficial word is that her head is clear. Which is good, because at this point, as I told her, she needs a brain tumor like she needs a hole in the head. In case you are wondering, she laughed heartily at that, so her sense of humor is intact, too!

Peace & Vibes,

BeauD

BeauD, My prayers go out to you. There is nothing that makes one feel more helpless than to have a sick loved one that you can't (physically) do anything about. I remember being told my mother was dying and declaring, "No God, you can't take my mother away and that's all there is to it." And shortly after that, being at the funeral home and saying "Well I guess you can if you want to." Prayer is a powerful tool. If it's God's will, I hope you r mother recovers fully. If not, I hope your family can bear it. Please remember that it's your loss, not hers that you're grieving. It's the last thing you want to hear now, but when she's in God's hands, her suffering will be over. I hate giving unsolicited advice, but I would use however much time you have left with her to the fullest. Visit with her as often as your life will allow. Don't leave anything to regret. I had had a good relationship with mymother for about the last 6 months of her life, but before that, I wasn't exactly the ideal son. I put her thru hell, and if I hadn't had the opportunity to make things right , I don't know if I could have taken her loss.

Slán agat,
Rich

Well, guys, today I feel as if a load has been lifted from my shoulders. I got a call from my Mom last night. She got the results of her tests back and she was downgraded from a Stage III to a Stage II. Her actual designation is T-II-O. The "O" means that her lymphatic system has not been compromised. She told me last night that the doctor had bet her his paycheck that it HAD been affected. It looks like they caught it early enough to have a fighting chance of keeping it from spreading.

The only slightly bad news was that her lung function was not as good as they hoped. They were hoping that her clean lung had been doing the lion's share of the breathing, but it looks like she's getting about 50% of her total capacity from each lung. So if they took out the affected lung, her lung capacity would be significantly reduced. Since she is a dancer, she really doesn't want to go that route anyways.

So we still have an uphill battle ahead of us, but at least it's not Hamburger Hill. This mountain feels more surmountable than it did last Sunday.

Thank you guys!

BeauDangles

I just wanted to thank all of you 'Catters for all of your support & prayers. I know they have made a difference for me. I have felt buoyed up, and whenever I have felt the tendency to get depressed there has been this insistent voice inside me saying, "No! Don't you mourn your mother before her time! Shake yourself out of this and get on with your day!"

I also wanted to report that I have found several clinical trials in the maryland area, which is fairly close as such things go. I have faxed them to my Mom and she is very interested.

We will find out today if the cancer has metasticized. We should also find out today if her lung function is such that she could live with just the one lung. Please keep your collective fingers crossed for us on this one. If we could be done with this with one surgical procedure, I would be very relieved.

Again, thanks for being there for me and my family.

Now, take the advice you've already been given, look into more information, etc. If nothing else, it will give you something to focus on. Fgawdssakes, do cry - you can't keep that stuff bottled up or you'll get sick from the stress, but cry privately. There's no need to prove how strong you are when there are no witnesses. Believe me, I speak from experience. (Get sick when this is over, and you have the time *g*). And maybe you'd like to print out some of this thread for your mom to see; I bet she'd like that. Mary.

Beau--

Hypatia lost her mom to lung cancer ~12.5 years ago, about six month before we were married. Her mom had already had a 2-3 year struggle with it when I met Hyp, and I was with her the night she got the call that the cancer had metastacized to her mother's brain. So we know the fear and pain you're going through.

But with hope, prayer, luck, modern science, and sheer determination, it's doesn't have to end that way for you mom. Not by a long ways. And you have the heartfelt prayers of some very good people here, some of them among the finest I've known, going out with the hope that your mother makes it through this--especially from those of us who have lost someone to cancer.

Add mine to them, for whatever it's worth. At tomorrow night's Taize service, every note I sing and my every moment of silent contemplation will be dedicated to you and your family.

Christopher Hoover

Beau- I really empathize. I also lost my Dad about ten years ago. My Mom's in fairly good shape for being 80, but not a day goes by that I don't worry. Even with my Mom doing well, it's hard for me to deal with the idea of my parents mortality.

Help your brother to continue the healing in his relationship with your Mom. This would be a tremendous help to her, I'm sure, as well as to him. The treatment of cancer often has amazing results these days. It sounds as though the tumors were found early, which often dramatically improves the outcome.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Maybe let your Mom know that you have this tremendous resource of people from around the world pulling for her. That thought would be a big comfort to me. Please, keep us informed, we'll be thinking of you all. Jay

Beau, I'm sending my prayers and thoughts of light as well. It's hard to go through this time, yet you have an opportunity to love your mom through it whatever the outcome, and sharing that love will bring you closer together. I can tell she loves you and I know that love will never die. I've been touched by loved ones who have passed on, and I don't think death is the end, even if the physical bond is broken. Especially when the bond is as strong as yours. Feeling the pain is tough, but never knowing love is way worse. What a blessing and a gift you have given each other, to choose to love.

Beau, Beau, Beau--

Tears are one way we get our flexible thinking back on track. Have my lap, anytime. Or Jesus'.

In fact....

IN JESUS' LAP
(Susan Hinton, on her birthday)

1.
In Jesus' lap is always Truth
And truth in love is told.
In Jesus' lap is peace and life,
No story is too old.

CHORUS:
In Jesus' lap I love to lie
And lie there when I can.
In Jesus' lap where I was born
When to His lap I ran.

2.
To Jesus' lap will I return
When buffeted by storm.
To Jesus' lap my soul does fly
When cold heart I would warm.

3.
From Jesus' lap I'll pray for you,
And bless you in your way.
From Jesus' lap, love, I can see
You, clearer every day.

4.
In Jesus' lap, His loving arms
Encircle what He's won.
In Jesus' lap, oh! lay me down
When I my race have run.

I will be praying for you, your brother and your mother. This is NOT an incurable and inevitably fatal problem. On a practical level, the first thing you will need to do is find out exacly what KIND of lung cancer you are dealing with-- this will be done with a bronchoscopy under local anesthesia-- once they ahve that information, then you learn about treatment options.
there was a Confederate general with the improbable name of Roberdeau Wheat. Shot through the lung at the first battle of Manassas, what us Northerners call Bull Run. The doctors told him that he was going to die. But I don't FEELL like dying right yet, he said. I'm sorry, said the doctors, there is no case of anybody recovering from your kind of wound. Well (said the lawyer turned general), I will put my case on record.
He made a full recovery.
The second time he was hit, (which I think was Sharpsburg) he was shot through the heart. Nevertheless. . .
Never give up. Never give up. Never, never, never give up. (Sir Winston Churchill) please let us all know what's going on as you learn more. You have LOTS of friends (and a few curmudgeons) wanting good things for your family, and Asking for them.

Beau -

Having lost people close to me from cancer, and being a cancer survivor myself, you have my thoughts and deepest sympathy. As SINSULL pointed out - every case is different. You might want to consider contacting the John Wayne Cancer Center, located in Southern California, in Orange County. They have some of the most knowledgeable experts and state of the art treatments available. The latest wave in cancer treatment is called Radio Frequency Ablasion. It has been found that cancer cells cannot survive under extreme heat or cold temperatures. Through injection of a needle, extreme temperatures are sent to the cancer cells, and they begin to "commit suicide." It is a very new treatment, and for some cancers, the success rate currently is at about 20%, which is not very high. I don't know if this treatment is available for lung cancer, because my sister found out about it when looking for alternative treatments for my father, who had pancreatic cancer. It could be at least worth contacting them, though. PM me if you'd like, and I'll look for the contact info.

BeauD,

I am a minister of the Lord Jesus Christ and I would love the opportunity to pray with you... in person, online or through this message board... God is STILL the healing, powerful Savior He always has been... Be of good cheer... God hears and answers prayer according to His divine purpose. Allow me to pray this prayer for your mother now and please contact me and let me know how close we can get to one another so that we can pray together as soon and as much as possible. I live in PA and I can travel if the need is there. Please feel free to contact me...

Lord Jesus Christ, it is in Your precious Name that I pray now. I lift up the life and health of BeauD's mother. You O Lord know who these people are and know their needs. This woman has been diagnosed with cancer and her son is afraid. Be the Lord and Prince of Peace in his life right now, Lord Jesus. Comfort these people with the power of Your Holy Spirit. Lord, You alone can deliver this woman form her pain and suffering. Reach down Your mighty hand and touch her. Make her whole by your power and drive the cancer from her. We bow ourselves down and humble ourselves before You, Lord Jesus, and ask your healing for this woman. Strengthen her body and bring her and her son to a greater and closer knowledge of You and Your saving grace. We submit to Your Lordship in our lives and humbly ask for the healing touch that only You can give. Free this woman from cancer and heal the pain in their hearts. I ask all this as your poor and humble servant, and it is in Your Mighty and Powerful and Supreme Name I pray, O my Savior Jesus Christ... Amen and Amen.

Beau, go with the assurance that God has heard this prayer. God promised us in the Bible that whatever we pray for, if we pray with faith that we have already recieved our needs, we will recieve them from His hand.

If you need to talk or pray or you need to know more about the promises of healing God has given us in the Bible, or you want to know more about a relationship with Christ that will bring about these blessings,

Dear Beau,

Mary's words are very wise. I, too, will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. We will *see* the best possible outcome of all this, with you filled with relief and your mom glowing with health. Do as much as you can for her; let your brother sort things out with her; and, talk to someone, even one of us online, whenever you feel the need or reach that point where you just don't think you can handle anymore.

I lost my mom a year and a half ago, but there was nothing we could fight with chemo or surgery; she was almost 83 and all systems just went.

Sending Light and Love and Healing Energy,

kat

Beau,
You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers. You have a rough road ahead of you. Remember that all the feelings are normal and healthy even the anger.
Every case is different. A close friend of mine was given the same diagnosis five years ago. He had an entire lobe removed and despite a small spot on the other was advised against chemo. The doctors thought it best to let him have some "quality of life" rather than prolonging his illness. Five years later he is still with us, still healthy, occasionally anemic but leading a normal life. I can't explain it. He is not religious - no miracle cures here! In fact, he such a pain in the ass curmudgeon, I told him he is just too mean to die. He is in his 70s.
This is a frightening time for your mother. Stay strong. She is already better off than most because you really care.
Mary

MudCatters,

I really need your help. My brother & I went home yesterday (Sunday) to see our Mom. It was a belated birthday lunch for my brother. We both noted that she looked really great, and that the house didn't smell of smoke as it usually did. She said that she had decided to cut back. On the way to the restaurant, we were asking her what had promted this change, and she told us that she had wanted to wait until after lunch to tell us, but that she had been to the doctor because of a chronic cough, and that x-rays had revealed two plumb-sized patches on her right lung.

Subsequent tests have shown these to be malignant cancerous growths. They have not determined if they have metastisized yet, or what effect they have had on her lymph nodes. Those tests will be done today. They will also determine the health of her left lung, and what quality of life she would have if they removed the right one. The growths are located in such a way as to be inoperable. In other words, they cannot just remove the growths. They would have to remove the whole lung. My Mom does not want to have the surgery. She has a real strong feeling that the chemo & radiation will do the job.

My Mom has been so much more than just a mother to me. She has seen me thru the darkest times of my life, as well as the brightest. I want to be strong for her, but to be honest, I feel completely undone by this news. I am so scared. I don't know what I would do without her.

I am also worried for my brother because he & she have had a somewhat rocky relationship in the past, although they have mended many bridges here of late.

We lost our father to lung cancer some years ago. While I was not as close to hime as I might have wished (my parents were divorced), it was still painful. My Mom is all I have left. I would really appreciate any prayers you had to offer.

Thank you,

BeauD.
