Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: GUEST Date: 14 Jan 07 - 04:04 AM Apart from his obvious ability which has made him one of our best ever, the great thing about Beckham is that he puts everything into his game. His new bosses can look forward to 110% commitment on and off the field, all done in an understated, almost self-effacing way which I think does him credit. Many people try to put him down as being thick, well; 1) He's done pretty well for a thicko 2) Since when was being thick a crime? 3) What do you suggest he does about his thickness? Or is it just a bit of jealousy perhaps. cheers, Terry |
Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 13 Jan 07 - 03:59 PM Thanks Jeff. There are often errors in the press and it is very easy to accept what they tell us. I appreciate your note. Strollin Johnny' - as I said, I do agree with you that it is a lifelong disease and no one is every truly "cured" - but it is a disease that people CAN live with provided they get the right help and that they want to help themselves. It is an extremely difficult disease to battle, but it can. I feel that the true heroes are the people who overcome their dependance and live productive lifes. Therefore, I find it repulsive when I hear people simply write things off as "it is just the disease". Tell that to the person whose lives have been forever ruined by a drunk driver. Help is available and people can overcome it. The disease cannot be treated as an excuse for behavior. In this country we can point to outstanding sports figures such as Joe Namath, Dwight Gooden and Darryl Strawberry. Promise unfullfilled because they weren't strong enough to fight the demons and disease. I find it heard to pity them. While their fame and fortune exposed them to more temptation than the rest of us, the same fame and fortune could have bought them help that they needed. |

Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 13 Jan 07 - 03:39 PM Thanks Ron, I appreciate your last post. BUT - an alcoholic (or any other kind of addict for that matter) can never be cured, once an addict always an addict, it's a lifetime illness. There's no cure for addiction, only treatment for the physical effects and education on how to control and live with it. That's the nature of the beast. You're right that George displayed his many problems in public too many times, but I'd bet my pension that they all were the result of his personal demon, alcohol. He was loved and admired by those who knew him, despite his alcohol-fuelled periods of madness, because he was, at heart, a genuinely nice guy - charming and full of humour and bonhomie - and quite simply the greatest player these islands have ever produced. If anyone ever doubted it, the huge crowds who lined the roads at his funeral bore testament. George Bush won't get as many when they put him under the sod! S:0) |

Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 13 Jan 07 - 11:54 AM Let's try some math Guest. David Beckham was born on May 2, 1975. You feel that makes him 34? My calendar says January 2007. Is there some odd sort of math being used in Europe that we do not know about? Den & Strollin Johnny, I apologize for calling Best a drunk. That was uncalled for and I should never have used that word. I never put Beckham in the same catagory as Best or Pele. The point I was replying to was that someone said Pele came to the United States and failed. They also mentioned Best, and it was true - Best had no impact on the U.S. game. He was an alcholic and he had no interest in pursuing soccer. While alcoholism is a disease, it can be cured. Perhaps cured is the wrong word too since you are always going to be an alcholic. I do not feel that writing it off to "disease" says enough. There are many people who have been helped because they have the fortitude and support system to recover. Best had more problems than just alcohol. |
Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: alanabit Date: 13 Jan 07 - 06:29 AM I wish Beckham well. He muffed a couple of penalties for England. He also put a few important ones away. In the game against Ecuador in the last World Cup, he literally played his guts out - and his goal saved England. That was not the only time it happened. None of the greats performed brilliantly every time they went out. Beckham had more good days than most. In ten or twenty years time, English football fans will be mourning the fact that we have not got another Beckham. Good luck to the man in whatever he does now. |

Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 13 Jan 07 - 03:29 AM Both games have their own charms, Slag. Which is best depends on what floats yer boat. Showbizz and Razamatazz - go for American Football. Athleticism and sporting prowess - make for the Soccer stadium. Some people like, and watch, both - great, no problem. We like Soccer best over here, I suspect because it's what we're brought up with, and I guess it'll always be the case that Americans prefer American Football for that very same reason. Now if we're moving on to a discussion of the greatness of different sports - what about Cricket, surely THE GREATEST of them all, and hugely superior to that girlie-game baseball? S:0)(Ducking and running) |
Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: Slag Date: 13 Jan 07 - 03:02 AM Guys that couldn't make it on the football team sometimes went and played soccer. It was pretty much a girls' game when I was in highschool. When we heard that there were actually professional soccer players we could hardly believe it! Soccer??? And they called it football! No helmet, no pads, no face guard, no tackling, blocking, what the hell kinda game was that? After we came to know the game a little better it seemed like the real action was in the spectators' section. Now there was a nice bit of sports violence. The soccer fans were in need of helmets, pads, face masks, etc., not to mention fire extinguishers and defibrulators. Hey, maybe there was something to this game after all. Ok. Now that you Europeans and other worldly persons are all in a lather, I have to tell you this. Several times I have sat with a stopwatch and timed the actual playtime in an American football game and it always comes out to about fifteen minutes whistle to whistle. If the defensive and offensive teams split the time that means each player who is in the game for most every play had about 7 and 1/2 minutes of real play time. When you consider that there are special teams that come on in certain circunstances it's even less time. In soccer or what you all call football the action is pretty much nonstop and I know that the degree of athleticism required puts American footballers to shame. Beckham may be what this country needs to turn some attention to this worthy sport! |
Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 13 Jan 07 - 01:33 AM Ron, George Best is the finest example anyone could use to demonstrate to young people the dangers of alcohol. He was simply the finest player of his generation, not just in the UK but in the world, who never fully achieved his potential because of his slide into addiction which began at a very early age. Booze stole a giant away from sport. We shouldn't denigrate the man just because of an illness, we should be very sad indeed. I know I am. S:0) BTW - yep, I know all about football and 'football', I wuz just 'aving a larf! :-) :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: Den Date: 12 Jan 07 - 11:48 PM Ron, I take exception to your remarks. George Best was an alcoholic. Its a disease Ron with dire consequences. Best was one of the most gifted players of his generation. Pele even said that Best was the Best. Good God no serious student of the game would even consider Beckham and Best in the same sentence, all national allegiance's aside. While you're at it check out this goal. Don't hold your breath on Beckham ever doing anything like this. |
Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 12 Jan 07 - 09:36 PM He is 31 and not past it. Pete did not fail. The states succeeded when Pele arrived because the league was successful for several years and it started interest in soccer - as witnessed by the fact that youth soccer is as prominent as Little League baseball, the MLS is succeeding, and soccer is alive and well. Best did not "try" the states - he was a drunk looking for a good time and did not care one bit about soccer. Loser. |

No, it will never displace them, and why should it, or vice versa? However, it may eventually overtake the other sports in pure money.... let's face it, Yanks and Canucks like football (sorry) while the rest of the world likes Rugby. Baseball - Cricket. Squash - Raquetball (yech!). But, Yankee football, Hurling, Aussie rules, lawn bowling, curling.... will live on in their own "venues". The only game that will never be equalled, in money or passion, the true game of the rich... war. |

Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 12 Jan 07 - 01:57 PM Thanks Den. When you mentioned "brand awareness" I thought you were looking at that over his athletic skills. Yes, people are more aware of Beckham because of the advertisments and the "Bend it" film, and his marriage to Posh. There are probably a lot of American atheletes who have the same issue - they sign advertising deals and become well known for that, but many people may never have seen them play a game. Most people know George Foreman was a boxer, but I would bet most people who see him selling his grills today never saw him throw a punch. |
Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: Den Date: 12 Jan 07 - 01:34 PM Ron you did indeed read me wrong. I was speaking of brand awareness. American sports fans show little mercy when they see someone dogging it. Beckham has a well recognized name in the states, and a good reputation. He has to show us what he is capable of in order to keep it. |

He has an amazing brand internationally and that's something that Americans understand. |

Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: Paul Burke Date: 12 Jan 07 - 11:54 AM The kick the ball, the man who's holding the ball, his balls, and have a ball version of football is much older than prissy soccer. It's still played once a year near here at Ashbourne in Derbyshire, and is played on Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday: You won't see Beckham here at any price. American football, Rugby football, Australian Rules and Association football are all descended from games like this. Though Australian Rules seems to be also partly descended from the independent (but related) root of Gaelic football, which is a wild and mad game and I don't know why it hasn't made it to British TV on those bleak terrestrial TV sport afternoons. Let's not talk about hurling. |

While LA is filled with paparrazi, they will be just another face in the crowd and can live more of a normal life then when he was the only game in town. He has admitted that the money is important, but he could have received MUCH more if he signed with other teams. I am sure that a Saudi team would have loved to own him. Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 12 Jan 07 - 10:03 AM The Galaxy were averaging about 20,000 per game. The Mexican team Chivas bought a fanchise that also plays in LA. While they are not drawing as well as the Galaxy, they are doing fine. The MLS also had a team in Florida, figuring the Latino population would come out as well. They did not. The Latino population in Florida is largely represented by Cuba and Latin America, which has a stronger baseball background. While the MLS will never be confused with the the great Italian or even British leagues, it will do well and be competitive. |
Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: Teribus Date: 12 Jan 07 - 09:58 AM Lots of latinos in LA, given the choice between American Football, Baseball or Soccer - I'd venture to guess that they'd go for Soccer. |
Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 12 Jan 07 - 09:31 AM "Americans hardly know who he is and there is no way that he alone will boost the popularity of soccer over here (which is virtually nonexistant). American football and baseball will not allow that. " I disagree. While soccer will never reach the popularity of football and baseball - or even basketball, it can be a successful niche sport - along the lines of hockey. The big three sports have a long history in this country, and it is hard to instill passion to a mass audience for a sport that has little significance to our past. However, there are more people that recognize David Beckham then you think. To the soccer playing youth of this country, his name and face are familiar from all the ads and merchandise that caters to that market. Los Angeles and the MLS have made a very good investment. He is worth every penny assuming that he lives up to the expectation. I'm not sure if you remember the Cosmos during the late '70's and early 80's. They filled 70,000 seat stadiums as soon as Pele arrived. I remember one weekend when both the Mets and Yankees were at home, and the Cosmos outdrew them both! Pele's arrival started a trend and we soon saw others such as Beckenbauer, Chinalgia, Best, Alberto and many other international stars. True, many were well past their prime - but they created a spark. The management of the league became greedy and expanded well beyond their means, but now in 2007 the structure is there. Americans are playing soccer - and many of our players are now doing well in Europe and abroad. The idea behind Beckham, who at 31 can still be an impact player in this league, is to put fans in the seats. That is the most important aspect. He is a poster-boy and has the skills to back it up. He will also help improve the level of play and can also help bring others to the game. There is strong talk of Ronaldo coming over. The MLS is playing it smart - building smaller stadiums (20 to 30 thousand) in markets that will support the game. The old NASL put teams in places like Rochester and Tulsa - fine cities but without a fan base that support a major league level team. The MLS has been around for 11 seasons now, and they are cautiously expanding. The level of competition has improved, and the signs are great. Think of Beckham as an ambassador. His greatest contribution to the game is yet to come. |

Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: GUEST,Asterix Date: 15 Jun 04 - 04:51 AM It was a game of two halves.... one 87 minutes long and the other..... six minutes long. Two goals in six minutes now thats what I call a Team. |

Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: Rasener Date: 15 Jun 04 - 04:15 AM I believe the rules are such nowadays, that the goalkeeper can move along the goal line but not come forward. Is that correct referees? |
Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: AKS Date: 15 Jun 04 - 03:57 AM But isn't it still in the book that the goalie may NOT move before the ball moves? Barthez was well on his way when Beckham was only jogging to the ball's (general) direction! re: "...quickly they have forgotten his excellent free kick..."; say no more, Alanabit, beautiful stuff it was! AKS ps did you see the Swedes kick the Bulgarians - boy can they run! Or then maybe the B's are slower than average... |
Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: alanabit Date: 15 Jun 04 - 02:13 AM Kevin, I have to disagree. A well hit penalty takes a twentieth of a second to reach its target. The goalkeeper doesn't have a chance if it is hit properly. I think it would be fairer to say that it is unreasonable to expect the penalty taker to get it right every time. To be fair to Becks, he has more than once taken penalties at nerve wracking moments and done the job perfectly. One memorable occasion was against Argentina in the World Cup two years ago. For those who are moaning about his recent miss, it is worth noting how quickly they have forgotten his excellent free kick, which resulted in England taking the lead against France. |

Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 14 Jun 04 - 05:27 PM A missed penalty is when the ball goes wide or over the top, and it is always an embarassing mistake. A saved penalty is when the keeper guesses right, jumps the correct way or stays in the middle, and stops the ball going into the goal, and statistically that is bound to happen every now and again. Not at all the same thing. |
Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: Rasener Date: 14 Jun 04 - 04:51 PM I love football, and am good mannered and am providing the good folk of Market Rasen with a folk club, which together with all the artists, we all put a lot of hard work into. Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: alanabit Date: 14 Jun 04 - 03:31 PM France were the better side and it would have been a travesty had they left the stadium with anything less than the three points which they deserved. They passed the ball to each other and played composed, confident football even when they were behind. They had passion, discipline and skill. I'll still give England a chance if the two sides meet again though. They weren't all bad. There were some good things in their performance and they can do better. |

Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: breezy Date: 14 Jun 04 - 11:41 AM its agame of two parts, the 2nd being longer than the first due to the addition of Added Time, England dont know about that. No one has told the boys to keep on playing till the end. It was in the minds of the players that they had won long before the final whistle was blown. The failure to drive this point home rests with our motivators especially that swede of a manager who is a creep and too many think the sun shines out of his fundamental. Lack of finishing the race to csoss the line in first place, cost England the game, loss of concentration, loss of determination, loss of pride, loss of direction and the lack of a man to kick arse on the field of play to lead the team to the end . Dont tell me they were good when they lost. England messed up, big time. If you want rewards you have to work for them. Michaela Breeze's reward has been achieved by exactly that, she puts these prima donnas of footballers to shame as can many real athletes. |

Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: Les from Hull Date: 14 Jun 04 - 09:12 AM This is what happens when a team defends too deep and fails to clear the ball, other than giving back to the opposition. We could have put more pressure on the French midfield players, other than having a clumsy striker leg one up. You're right about James' positioning, Den, but even then it was a brilliantly taken free kick. Bartez has seen enough Beckham spot kicks to know his technique, but you can't really blame James for not saving the penalty, Sophe. Keepers will often decide which side to dive to before the kicker takes it. It's a 50:50 thing. |
Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: GUEST,Jon Date: 14 Jun 04 - 09:10 AM I think it unfair to blame Beckham for the loss but it is fair, as suggested in another thread, to suggest he was unwise to take the kick. Here is another angle - from the BBC. As for the comments about the goalkeeper, as a Norwich supporter, I can assure you the real problem in that area was overlooking Robert Green... Mind you, in fariness to James and with regards to the penalty istelf, I thought it was really well struck. Jon |

Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: GUEST,Den Date: 14 Jun 04 - 09:03 AM Well from what I saw Beckham didn't seem to get much purchase on the spot kick and to be honest Bartez did very well. He was across very quickly to make the stop. If its donkeys your looking for. Look no further than Heskey it was his needless foul that gave away the free-kick. James' positioning on the kick was poor. He rooted himself dead centre on the goal line. The wall is there to cover part of the goal. The way they had set up would allow James to move a little to his right and guard that side of the net. And finally Steven Gerrard had enough time to hit the ball anywhere other than where he put it. What about the 30th row of the stadium. |
Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: Sweetfia Date: 14 Jun 04 - 08:37 AM I can't remember what goal is was but what i do remember is that James went one way as the ball went the complete opposite way!! Idiot! |
Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: GUEST Date: 14 Jun 04 - 07:21 AM Anyone who blames Becham for this loss was looking at a different match than I was.
