Subject: RE: Welsh poster translation required From: GUEST,John Rowlands Date: 01 Jul 07 - 01:28 PM If you would like to buy a genuine enamel sign of the poster you mention, there's mine going on ebay right now! Thanks, fotonix@tiscali.co.uk |
Subject: RE: Welsh poster translation required From: sian, west wales Date: 20 Mar 05 - 06:43 AM Kinda like it, brucie. And Megan L, the same thought struck me! Or possibly it was part of Owain Glyndwr's plan for unification of Wales ... Still want to hear the tune this is being set to ... siân |
Subject: RE: Welsh poster translation required From: Peace Date: 19 Mar 05 - 05:02 PM sian, yes to the female. We use the term here to refer to other firefighters, male or female. Sorry 'bout that, ma'am. |
Subject: RE: Welsh poster translation required From: Megan L Date: 19 Mar 05 - 03:48 PM jings ye mean auld lang shanks set up the forrestry commision weel well ye live an learn :-) |
Subject: RE: Welsh poster translation required From: GUEST,NIckp Date: 19 Mar 05 - 03:07 PM Thank you, I knew the Cat wouldn't let me down. As it happens it's an old enamelled sign so I expect that's from before the English descended over the Borders! Nick |
Subject: RE: Welsh poster translation required From: sian, west wales Date: 19 Mar 05 - 12:56 PM I was just slow off the mark, brucie! (You do remember that I'm a female buddy, right?) And, Jon, if I smoked (which I don't! Filthy ych-a-fi habit!) when visiting the relatives in North Wales I'd ysmygu, but down this way (south west) I'd probably smoco, or smocio if I was smocio-ing posh ciggies. Ain't life complicated? siân |
Subject: RE: Welsh poster translation required From: Peace Date: 18 Mar 05 - 04:31 PM sian, I should have thought before writing to the Fire Service in Wales that you'd handle this. Forgot, buddy, Sorry. |
Subject: RE: Welsh poster translation required From: GUEST,Jon Date: 18 Mar 05 - 03:31 PM I wasn't too far out then Sian. I wonder where the poster saw it. Most signs I remember in Wales were bilingual, eg: No Smoking Dim ysmygu. Would, if you have the habit, ysmygu or smocio? |
Subject: RE: Welsh poster translation required From: sian, west wales Date: 18 Mar 05 - 03:04 PM Couldn't get in earlier, but here you go. Comisiwn Coedwigaeth Cymerwch Ofal Peidiwch Cynneu Ta^n Forestry Commission Take Care Do not light fire. COH mish ioon COID wig eth cuy MER wch OH val PIDE ee-ooch CUH nie Taaan ... remembering, of course, that the ch is like 'Bach' in Johann Sebastian. So ... you're singing this? OK - I guess it scans. Kinda. Haiku-ish. siân |
Subject: RE: Welsh poster translation required From: Peace Date: 18 Mar 05 - 03:00 PM I sent a message via e-mail to a fire service in Wales. Will post reply when and if. |
Subject: RE: Welsh poster translation required From: GUEST,Jon Date: 18 Mar 05 - 11:55 AM My best attempt. Someone who speakes Welsh may well correct me: Take Care Don't start a fire. |
Subject: RE: Welsh poster translation required From: GUEST,Snuffy Date: 18 Mar 05 - 11:03 AM If we're doing it a word at a time - the only other one I know is "Peidiwch" which means "Don't" |
Subject: RE: Welsh poster translation required From: GUEST Date: 18 Mar 05 - 08:19 AM "Tan" I think means 'fire'. As for the rest, it'll take a far more in-depth knowledge of Welsh than mine! |
Subject: Welsh poster translation required From: nickp Date: 18 Mar 05 - 08:10 AM Hi folks, I know we have a few Welsh speakers out there and I've been asked to get a translation of a poster an acquaintance has. It appears to be a warning about forest fires and reads: Comisiwn Coedwigaeth (I guess that's Forestry Commision) Cymerwch Ofal Peidiwch Cynneu Tan (with a circumflex over the 'a') And I don't suppose anyone fancies trying a phonetic pronunciation that I can pass on too? Thanks, Nick |
