Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Bill D Date: 09 Oct 08 - 12:56 PM Skivee..yeah...that oughta do it! BTW...an FYI. Those at the Getaway may have noticed & used the color aerial photos of the camp area which were on the registration table. I got them at this site using the Microsoft VE (labels) setting. IF your computer supports FLASH, go to 38°49'50.9"N 76°32'29"W to see the camp from any height. FlashEarth is a standalone site which is actually a subset of http://www.neave.com/, an amazing site set up by a young programmer in London. He has many fascinating effects and games...etc., as well as links to his Flickr images of travels from travels and hobbies. Quite a place... |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Amos Date: 09 Oct 08 - 01:28 PM OR go to this Googl;e Map A |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Bill D Date: 09 Oct 08 - 01:35 PM hmm..the Google map has improved since last year...thanks, Amos! (the value of the FlashEarth is that it uses MS Virtual Earth, so that it can see a lot of places all over the world that Google Maps doesn't cover.... Google Earth does that too, but it seems that there are varied results depending on the program's database. |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Charley Noble Date: 09 Oct 08 - 08:50 PM Another nice thing I picked up at Getaway was Dave Diamond's songbook of outrageous parodies and commentaries on office life in Washington, D.C. I knew that Diamond was a member of Boarding Party, one of the most influential sea music groups that have grqced this wide world. And I knew he did occasional satirical songs such as "The Folksinger's Lament" but I had no idea of all the other creative ditties he had composed. There's also a "fake" CD included with the song book which demonstrates how some of the songs might be sung, sometimes with alternative lyrics! Very useful to those of us who are musically illiterate. Dave and Barry did a fine job of coordinating the Sea Shanty Workshop. It was more sparsely attended than three years back but there were some excellent contributions. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Ferrara Date: 10 Oct 08 - 12:57 AM Well, Surprise! Darriel and a friend dropped by here today (his college campus is an hour away) and he agreed to mail us a CD of his Getaway pics. (I only had to supply the SASE and CD case.) Once they get here I guess I'd better put them up, huh? |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Bobert Date: 10 Oct 08 - 07:33 AM KT, Sorry you missed my BluesMini... You would have fit in real nicely and not even gotten fired unless, of course, you refused to return one of the P-Vines beloved and borrowed peacock feathers... B~ |

Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Genie Date: 10 Oct 08 - 03:46 PM Sins, I dunno if you gave me the cold or if we both caught it from someone else, but I guess the price I'm paying for trying to run on ca. 4 hr. sleep a night for 3 nights in a row is that I came down with a doozey of a cold/bronchitis by the time I flew back to Portland on Wednesday. (I could pull all-nighters back to back with no prob when I was in my 20s. Can't figure out way the bod can't handle it now.) Anyhoo, foggy sleep-deprived and nasally blocked minds do dumb things like plugging in their laptops in airport terminals, reminding themselves not to forget the power supply cord when packing up the laptop, and immediately thereafter walking off with the laptop power supply still plugged into the terminal wall. I finally tracked down the power supply this morning; I knew exactly where and when I left it, in the Raleigh-Durham terminal, but, for the same reason I so easily left it behind, apparently nobody else noticed it till last night. (A white cord plugged into a white wall above a white counter, with the end of the cord flopped behind a row of chairs; very easy to miss.) I should be getting the cord back next Tues. or Wed. (It helps to have a niece who works for American Airlines and based in Raleigh.) Meanwhile, I really don't have anything but short-term emergency access to the MacBook that has my Getaway pics and videos. So it'll be sometime next week before I can post anything or send any videos to Charlie Baum or Dick G. or set up a password-limited website. I did get some really nice footage of a few events, though, and I can easily make stills from the videos too. Stay tuned. G |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: jacqui.c Date: 10 Oct 08 - 03:56 PM That's wonderful Genie. Hope the bug goes away soon, both Kendall and I are under the weather - he's on anti-biotics as whatever it was went to his chest. I'm still trying to get together enough energy to put down recollections of the Getaway but right now everything is still a bit of a blur. Those five hour nights do not help any! |

Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Leadfingers Date: 10 Oct 08 - 07:26 PM Comisserations to all you Germ Laden peeps ! I seem to have escaped , but DO have a degree of Jet Lag still ! It was 28 hours from leaving Mary's to drive to DC to walking out of Heathrow and getting a bus home . I must get MY piccies downloaded and see where I can put them . Too many memories , Too much good music and WAY too much good company ! |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Charley Noble Date: 10 Oct 08 - 09:26 PM I was forewarned by Andrew and Carole that there was a bug about and I was taking massive dosages of vitamin C. Of course, Gorgeous Gary was also carrying a bug which he only announced after I gave him a warm greetings. But so far so good! Another group I thoroughly enjoyed was The Beans, for their harmony arrangements and tasteful instrumentation; they need to do a new CD! The harmony workshop led by The Kossoy Sisters, Julia Friend and Ken Schatz is another recurring memory for me. The Parodies workshop by Dave Diamond and Micca was hilarious. I provided "Wake Up Susina" explaining that it was the original song while "Wake Up Little Suzie" was actually the parody; I'm not sure if if I convinced anyone but some appeared to be amused. Elizabeth Laprelle was every bit as wonderful as I remember her from a Getaway three years ago. This time I was impressed with the range of songs she sings. And she did sing "Rain and Snow." For the Saturday evening concert I led "Bound Away," a Liverpool outward bound song by old sailor-poet Bill Adams which is a tribute to "Liverpool Packet." And I couldn't have asked for better company for bunkmates; they never made it to bed before 4 am so I actually got some sleep! Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Ron Davies Date: 10 Oct 08 - 09:33 PM Charley-- "Wake Up Susina" is a true classic--and one of the musical high points of the weekend. I'm also very impressed with your scholarship in uncovering it. |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Tinker Date: 11 Oct 08 - 10:25 AM Perhaps I can chalk it up to the record breaking lack of sleep at this Getaway, or the cold I seem to be sharing with lots of others, but I confess to a bit of a haze around my memories. One that has been floating back with a smile was the time I got to spend with Kiran while his Dad practiced with a few members of Moose Turd Pie before the concert. We rambled around the retreat center looking at the alphabet on the CD boxes... But when we talked about the musicians (despite repeated insistant attempts to be identified as Uncle Mick) Kiran of the sparkling eyes was repeatedly clear that big guy with the guitar was "Mick-ey" It still makes me giggle. Thanks for sharing Dan and Geeta |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Charley Noble Date: 11 Oct 08 - 01:15 PM Thanks, Ron. It's nice to have my research skills recognized. "Wake Up Susiana" is also a favorite song among the crews of the windjammer fleet here in Maine. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Bill D Date: 13 Oct 08 - 02:24 PM gee, Leadfingers... I had to spend time teaching my son, while young, the difference between good beer and 'other stuff', so he would be ABLE to buy me beer when old enough! Fortunately, it worked.... |

Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: ClaireBear Date: 30 Oct 08 - 11:48 AM I've been remiss -- my friend Ellen Silverberg took many, many wonderful Getaway photos of lots of us and put them up on Flickr a few days ago. I've been so swamped that I haven't had time to cope, but thanks for refreshing this thread just when I have a spare half-a-mo. Here is her note: FSGW 2008 People! At last I've put my photos onto a Flickr site. To see them, go to www.flickr.com/photos/ellenxox/sets/72157608288907937 (clickity click). From there, click on either "Details" (on left) or "Slideshow" uppper right. You can also leave comments... See you next year! Ellen X Silverberg |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Bill D Date: 30 Oct 08 - 11:59 AM About pictures....ummm.... I brought my camera, got it out and turned it on, only to have nasty message in the viewfinder. It seems my card was at home... in the computer....where I had been downloading everything to have it 'clear' for the Getaway. Embarassing? Why, yes..... after all the years I have taken pics. I am glad others took up the slack.... Mea culpa, mea culpa...mea MAXIMA culpa! (interesting side light...I opened this thread and began viewing Bobert, his cohorts and the ladies with their feathers while listening to a folder of MP3s of......Gene Autry! Gives a whole new perspective on booty-shakin'!) |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Ebbie Date: 30 Oct 08 - 12:33 PM Those pictures from Ellen Silverberg are wonderful on a different level. So often, imo, in a music crowd people's faces go flat and emotionless as they/we go "inside". Ellen captured laughter and active listening. |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Bill D Date: 30 Oct 08 - 01:16 PM Thos photos by Ellen are wondeful! Seldom have I seen the 'essence' of some of my friends captured so well. Ummm....you do NOT see, nor will you remember, pics showing late night behavior not approved by Methodists. |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: ClaireBear Date: 30 Oct 08 - 01:25 PM Those were the off-site, Getaway-related extracurricular activities carried out at a nearby hotel with amazingly similar decor, Bill -- how could you forget? |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Bill D Date: 30 Oct 08 - 01:43 PM "how" could I forget? Did you see the ones of ME? |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: ClaireBear Date: 30 Oct 08 - 01:55 PM Oh, you mean like the one of you with the snakebite medicine? The snakes were indeed biting very fiercely that night. As St. Patrick wasn't available to drive them awauy, what then could one possibly do but take precautionary measures to prevent negative impact on one's personal welfare? It's not as if you were drinking, Bill! |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Bill D Date: 30 Oct 08 - 02:03 PM The snakes were in full retreat...... except the pink ones who sang along and slithered over the ceiling while.... nevermind |
