Subject: Lyr Add: AG PLEEZ DADDY (Jeremy Taylor) From: Wotcha Date: 14 Jan 00 - 08:12 AM I need some help filling in the gaps on the following, but thought this song would be a fine contribution to the kids section of the database: AG PLEEZ DADDY -- Copyright to Jeremy Taylor (1) Ag Pleez Daddy/ Won't you take us to a drive-in/ All 6, 7 of us, 8, 9, 10/ We wanna see a flick about Tarzan and the ape men/ When the show is over/ You can bring us back again. Chorus: Popcorn, chewing gum/ Peanuts and bubblegum/ Ice cream, candy floss, and Eskimo Pie/ Knickerpulls [?} and liquorice/ Pepsi Cola, Ginger beer, and Calico Rye[?}/ (2) Ag Pleez Daddy/ Won't you take us to the funfair/ We wanna have a ride on the bumper cars/ We'll buy a stick of candy floss/ And eat it on the octopus/ And then we'll take a rocket ship that goes to Mars./ (3) Ag Pleez Daddy/ Won't you take us to the wrestling/ We want to see that oaf called Sky High Lee/ Whe he fights Willie Liefenburg/ There's gonna be a murder/ Poor Willie's gonna don a red bloody hanky/ (4) Ag Pleez Daddy/ Won't you take us off to Durban/ It's only 8 hours, in a Chevrolet/ There's fantasy and ...[...]../ There's tons of fish in the aquarium/ The ideal place for a holiday/ AG PLEEZ DADDY!!! *Ag is pronounced much like ach or och. Apparently, according to earlier thread this was a number one song on South Africa's music radio. It certainly is remembered by kids I knew from Malawi, Rhodesia, and RSA. Appreciate the help filling in the blank lines. Cheers, Brian |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Ag Pleez Daddy From: Roger the skiffler Date: 14 Jan 00 - 08:23 AM Thanks, Brian. A college friend of mine who came from SA (well the apartheid regine ran his liberal parents out) used to sing this and I had only reconstructed a fragment from memory. (Well it was 1968!). I think a South African is needed to cnfirm the tradename/nicknames of the sweeties/candies RtS |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Ag Pleez Daddy From: Roger the skiffler Date: 14 Jan 00 - 08:32 AM As I remember it the sweet "Knickerpulls" was actually "Niggerballs" but today we'd want to use an alternative (I'm surprised Jeremy didn't)! And, I think, Calico RICE. Can't remember what was in Durban. RtS |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Ag Pleez Daddy From: Malcolm.Smith@durham.ac.uk Date: 17 Jan 00 - 08:09 AM I have an unconfirmed recollection that there was a revue called "Wait a Minim" at the Fortune Theatre in London, sometime around 1965, and this song was either performed in the show or released on record at the same time. Here are a few, sometimes tentative, suggestions. I'm sure it was "nigger balls" and "Canada Dry" in the chorus. I think verse 3 has a rather different ending: /Cos Willie's gonna moorer (sounds like) that lerrer Yankee/ Verse 4, after "Chevrolet" is There's lots of sand and sea and sun/ And fish in the aquarium/ It's a lekker place for a holiday. I think there was a disappointment verse, imperfectly recalled as Ag, soos, Daddy/ If we can't go to Bioscope/ something something something, Life's a heck of a bore/ If you won't take us to the zoo / then what the heck else can we do/ but go on out and moorer all the uggies next door. I also recall a "last try" verse: "Ag, please, Daddy" which is cut off by the angry reply "Foetsaak!" (Be Off! Or something similar). Apologies for hazy memory and ghastly Afrikaans orthography. Can I just say that for me one of the delights of Mudcat is the posting of songs that I thought no-one else in the world remembered, and the collective memory it draws from other contributors. Malcolm Smith. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Ag Pleez Daddy From: Roger the skiffler Date: 17 Jan 00 - 08:33 AM Thanks, Malcolm, that's helped! I'd omitted the "Foetsaak" ,which I think is Afrikaans for "Go forth and multiply", so as not to offend any small possums or herons that might be reading thi! Your memory is a lot less hazy than mine! "Moorer" is "murder" and is it "blerry" (bloody) Yankee? I think the [something something] in your new verse picks up the other suggested locations:, funfare, wrestling?. RtS |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Ag Pleez Daddy From: bigJ Date: 17 Jan 00 - 03:36 PM Malcolm, you're right, there was a revue called 'Wait A Minim' - I saw it at the Fortune theatre but I'm sad to say - since it ages me even more - that it was 1963. The LP that was released at the time was on Decca's London label LK4610. Ag Pleez Daddy was also released some time prior to that on the African Gallotone label. Regards. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Ag Pleez Daddy From: roopoo Date: 18 Jan 00 - 02:23 AM I have put a request through, (via a friend of mine who knows of the song, can sing the first line, did down the phone at me, but can't remember much more), to another contact who lived in RSA for years, and who she says is bound(!) to know it. I only lived there for a couple of years in the 80s and never came across it, but is it referring to the annual emptying of the Transvaal and Free State into Durban every December? I got a wonderful book while I was out there called "Kyk Daar!", which is all about Durban life, covers the annual visit of the "Kyk Daars", and has a cartoon with the grandad standing holding his little grandson's hand on the beach. They are looking at the sea, and the little boy says:"Jus like Oupa, on whose big farm is this big dam?" I hope before long I may be able to post something. It relies on contact #1 actually remembering to get in touch with contact #2 in the first place! I'll try and nag'em! cheers mouldy |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Ag Pleez Daddy From: Lanfranc Date: 18 Jan 00 - 05:15 AM Jeremy Taylor is very much alive and well and back in the UK. He has reissued a selection of his tracks from the 60's and 70's on Prism PLATCD 990. CDs and concert dates available from Jeremy Taylor Recordings, Rock House, Trelystan, WELSHPOOL, Powys, WALES, UK SY21 8HZ I saw "Wait a Minim" too, and, until some ratbag borrowed and didn't return them, I had the LPs of "Wait a Minim" and also "Minim'bili". There's more to JT than Jobsworth, but he never did worry too much about being PC, whether in the old days in South Africa, whence he was from time to time banned, or in the songs he is writing today. He's always true to himself, though, and that works for me. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Ag Pleez Daddy From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 31 Aug 01 - 09:02 AM I notice this thread also asked for more info on JT. This is from 1998: Known throughout South Africa for his comic song Ag Pleez Daddy, Jeremy Taylor first appeared on the London stage in 1963 with the musical revue Wait a Minim! which also featured ethnomusicologist Andrew Tracey (also on the Festival Fringe leading the Wood and Air workshop on xylophones at the St Andrews College Design and Technology Centre). From there Jeremy became a leading exponent of satirical songs on the British folk scene, enjoying a two-year stage partnership with Spike Milligan.
He returned to South Africa in 1979 to play one-man shows, TV and stage acting roles. He returned to Britain in 1994 to lecture on South Africa and now lives in Montgomeryshire.

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Ag Pleez Daddy From: Bob Bolton Date: 01 Sep 01 - 09:34 AM G'day, I seem to remember some discussion of Jeremy Taylor's wonderful (and trenchant) songs of South Africa and beyond a year or two back. I may have contributed the words of Jobsworth (almost the anthem of my days with a working band, really). Jeremy toured Australia in 1979 and I have a cassette tape compiled from (broadcasts of) his concerts in Adelaide, South Australia and Perth, Western Australia. The tracks on this tape are: Dr Barnard's Driver (comedy routine), Transplant Calypso (song) Immorality Act (song) Lift Girl's Lament (song) Ag Pleez Daddy (song) Republic Day Calypso (song) All Along the South Coast (song, set in England) Love on the Sands (song, set in England) Love California Style (song) Jobsworth (song) You Know! (poem, England?) Made in Holland (song) When You've Gone out of your Mind (song – parody of Windmills of the Mind) The Swan Brewery Props (Jeremy – definitely not drinking the props from the sponsor) Prawns in the Game (song based on Union Leaders' speeches) Donkeys' Charter (song about Blackpool, England) Winter Song (more serious song about Blackpool) Pommy Bastard (Jeremy's take on local attitudes Irene Goodnight (end of concert). If you can't find the words elsewhere, to some of these beaut songs, I could get in and dig them out (so far as I can understand his Afrikaans numbers). Regards, Bob Bolton

The Northern suburbs of Johannesburg is(was) where the wealthy live(d)while poor whites lived in the southern suburbs. ..."that" or "an" ou called Sky High Lee. An ou is Afrikaans for a fellow. At one time "Ou" jokes were the rage in South Africa. eg What's a trio? Answer: An ou who lives in a tree. Sky High Lee was a Texan wrestler. Willie Liebenberg (not Liefenberg) was a local wrestler. ......cos Willie's gonna donner that blerry Yankee donner means beat up The song ends with "Voetsek!" pronounced Footsek!(foot as in put) with the meaning already alluded to! Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Ag Pleez Daddy From: GUEST,harvey andrews Date: 11 Jan 02 - 04:46 AM This song means a lot to me. I was a student when it was in the charts in England. A friend showed me my first three chords on a guitar and that evening I wrote a parody. We had a lecturer who gave us excruciating health lectures who's initials were DAD, so of course, we called him daddy. The opening line was "ag, pleez Daddy wont you give us a health lecture.." I sang it the next night in a college talent show...and that was my first solo public performance. Jeremy and I worked together frequently in the 70's. He is now living just outside Shrewsbury. I saw him recently at a local folk club, audience about 20, and thought long and hard on how a man of such brilliant talent could be so little known in our society. It's probably because he sings and plays, stimulates and entertains, asks questions and challenges an audience and doesn't just dance and mime to percussion tracks. Pardon the sour grapes but I'm distinctly pissed off with Britain's ever accelerating dumbing down! |

I think he might have been responsible for Chastity Belt too. In any case, "Prawns in the game" is well worth catching. Kitty PS Jeremy Taylor is one of the first guests I ever saw at a folk club (when I was still at school) when he did Ag pleez Daddy and the elevator song, and the song about changing your appearance to be trendy because all the white people want to be black and the black people want to be white. AG PLEEZ DEDDY (THE BALLAD OF THE SOUTHERN SUBURBS)
Ag pleez, Deddy, won't you take us to the drive-in?
CHO: Popcorn, chewing gum, peanuts an' bubble gum,
Ag pleez, Deddy, won't you take us to the fun-fair?

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Ag Pleez Daddy From: Dave Bryant Date: 14 Jan 02 - 12:04 PM Sorry not to have looked in on this one earlier - it was me who wanted the lyrics of "Red Velvet Steering Wheel..." I think that nearly everything's been said already. I actually went and saw "Wait a Minim" and still have (a very warped) copy of the record. The Chastity Belt song was in the show, but Jeremy said he learnt it at college. A cut down version of W.A.M. was broadcast on BBC television and entitled "Time to Breve". Many years ago I heard a radio programme in which the late John Betjemin read his favourite bits of poetry and "All around the south coast" was included. Is he now living back in the UK permanently ? When I last saw him a couple of years ago he still had a place in South Africa, and told how he made person-to-person calls back to a friend in his village. The village telephonist recognising him, would then spend the next 20 minutes telling him all the local gossip and as his friend was not available anyway, he got it all for free. Finally has anyone got the words of one song which has not been mentioned "The Belle of Barnstable" - definitely one of my favourites. All I can remember is bits, the local lord saying: I'd forfeit all my titles if only she'd give in, She's paralyzed my vitals - I think I need a gin. And the vicar: Thy kingdom come thy will be done In heaven and below. Thy kingdom's in the second row, Oh please lord let me in.

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Ag Pleez Daddy From: Jim Dixon Date: 14 Jan 02 - 06:04 PM Dave: If you want to request lyrics for different songs (other than the one you named at the beginning of this thread), it would be best to start a new thread for each song. On the main forum page, click on "Create a New Thread." On the next screen, select "Lyric Request" as the prefix, and then type the name of the song as the name of the thread (or whatever you think the name might be). On the next screen, type whatever information you have about the song as the first message. Don't assume that whoever reads the new message will have read the old one, or vice versa. But before you do even that, check to see if the song has already been posted in some old thread. To do that, on the main forum page, type either the title or some phrase from the song – in quotation marks – in the box called "Digitrad and Forum Search" and click "Go." |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Ag Pleez Daddy From: John MacKenzie Date: 13 Sep 04 - 06:18 AM The song Kitty alluded to is called Black and White Calypso, and was I believe the reason why Jeremy was not allowed back into SA for a while. I used to see him often when we both lived in Richmond Surrey. He was married to Zelide then, and they have two boys called Josh and Caleb, I always loved those names. Can't remember all the words of this song, but it is very funny, and like most of Jeremy's songs extremely perceptive. Turning the pages of Zonk I see Special liquid that guarantee To make your curly hair straight And bring you success on every date But when I pass by the downtown beauty parlour There's the white ladies sitting there hour after hour With a big funny thing on their head trying to make their straight hair curly instead. Cho. Tell me tell me tell me why I want to know the facts Why all the white people want to black And the black people want to go white I can only remember fragments of the other verses, but there was a bit in the final verse about his friend marrying a black girl, and it says, And she gave him a little bit of black in the night And he gave her a little bit of white That's the answer. Well in apartheid days in SA this was the ultimate offence, to even mention mixed marriages. So he was not a friend of Dr Verwoerd, but he was a hero to lot of others, including me. Giok |

I learned his "Piece of Ground" and spent the next 32 years looking for anything about its author. I found Jeremy a few years ago on the web (JeremyTaylor.info) and corresponded with him. The upshot of all that is that I am helping him come to the US (Chicago area) for a number of appearances which I lined up for him. If anyone wants to know about these they may contact me. (Jeremy_info@Yahoo.com) He'll be here in the month of March, 2005, very soon.
