Christmas in Prison
John Prine

https://youtu.be/00Ig33jctXs

It was Christmas in prison
And the food was real good
We had turkey and pistols
Carved out of wood
And I dream of her always
Even when I don't dream
Her name's on my tongue
And her blood's in my stream

Chorus:
Wait awhile eternity
Old mother nature's got nothing on me
Come to me, run to me, come to me, now
We're rolling, my sweetheart
We're flowing, by God

She reminds me of a chess game
With someone I admire
Or a picnic in the rain
After a prairie fire
Her heart is as big
As this whole goddamn jail
And she's sweeter than saccharine
At a drug store sale

Chorus

The search light in the big yard
Swings round with the gun
And spotlights the snowflakes
Like the dust in the sun
It's Christmas in prison
There'll be music tonight
I'll probably get homesick
I love you
Goodnight

Chorus

Subject: Lyr/Chords Add: IT'S A BIG OLD GOOFY WORLD (Prine)
From: NightWing
Date: 01 Dec 21 - 01:43 AM

A week or two after he died, I sang this song at a local jam. I had just learned it over the preceding couple of months. Sometime in the final pair of verses, I found myself crying. Managed to finish the song, but I had to take a break to get myself back together. I've managed to finish it a few times without weeping, but it still makes me teary.

It's A Big Old Goofy World
Written by John Prine

Up in the morning, Work like a dog
Is better'n sittin' Like a bump on a log
Mind all your manners, Be quiet as a mouse
Some day you'll own a home That's as big as a house

I know a fella He eats like a horse
Knocks his old balls Round the old golf course
You oughta see his wife She's a cute little dish
She smokes like a chimney An' drinks like a fish

CHORUS
There's a big ol' goofy man Dancin' with a big ol' goofy girl
Ooh babe! It's a big ol' goofy world

Now Elvis had a woman With a head like a rock
I wished I had a woman That'd made my knees knock
She'd sing like an angel An' eat like a bird
An' if I wrote a song She'd know ever single word

CHORUS

Kiss a little baby Give the world a smile
If you take an inch Give 'em back a mile
Cause if you lie like a rug An' you don't give a damn
You're never gonna be As happy as a clam

So I'm sitting in a hotel Tryin'a write a song
My head is just as empty As the day is long
Why, it's clear as a bell, I shoulda gone to school
I'd be wise as an owl 'Stead'a stubborn as a mule.

CHORUS
Ooh Babe! It's a big ol' goofy world

EVERYBODY
(John Prine)

"While out sailing on the ocean
While out sailing on the sea
I bumped into the Savior
And He said pardon me
I said "Jesus you look tired"
He said "Jesus so do you,
Sit down son
'Cause I got some fat to chew"

Everybody needs somebody that they can talk to
Someone to open up their ears
And let that trouble through
Now you don't have to sympathize
Or care what they may do
But everybody needs somebody that they can talk to

Well he spoke to me of morality
Starvation, pain and sin
Matter of fact the whole dang time
I only got a few words in
But I won't squawk
Let 'em talk
Hell it's been a long long time
And any friend that's been turned down
Is bound to be a friend of mine

Now we sat there for an hour or two
Just eatin' that Gospel pie
When around the bend come a terrible wind
And lightning lit the sky
He said so long son I gotta run
Appreciate you listening to me
And I believe I heard him sing these words
As he skipped out across the sea"

(Thanks, John Prine)

Lyrics from LyricFind very close to those on jpshrine.

Transcribed from Souvenirs; fifteen new recordings of classic songs (2000)

Grandpa wore his suit to dinner
Nearly every day
No particular reason
He just dressed that way
Brown necktie and a matching vest
Both his wingtip shoes
He built the closet on our back porch
And put a penny in a burned-out fuse

Grandpa was a carpenter
He built houses, stores and banks
Chain-smoked Camel cigarettes
And hammered nails in planks
He was level on the level
He shaved even every door
And voted for Eisenhower
'Cause Lincoln won the war

Well, he used to sing me "Blood On The Saddle"
And rock me on his knee
And let me listen to the radio
Before we got T.V.
Well, he'd drive to church on Sunday
And he'd take me with him too
Stained glass in every window
Hearing aids in every pew

Chorus

Now my Grandma was a teacher
She went to school in Bowling Green
Traded in a milking cow
For a Singer sewing machine
Well, she called her husband "Mister"
And she walked real tall and pride*
She used to buy me comic books
After Grandpa died

Chorus

* He seems to sing 'pride' to rhyme with 'died'.

"My dad went to 11 different schools because Grandpa was a carpenter. He died when I was about 7 or 8. He built the Bank on 4th and Madison...man, Grandpa used to take me everywhere. After I sang the song for a bunch of my family, a couple of my Aunts pulled me aside to tell me that he didn't smoke Camels, he smoked Kools." John Prine

GRANDPA WAS A CARPENTER
Written by John Prine
As recorded by John Prine on “Sweet Revenge” (1973)

1. Grandpa wore his suit to dinner nearly every day—
No particular reason; he just dressed that way:
Brown necktie and a matching vest and both his wingtip shoes.
He built a closet on our back porch and put a penny in a burned-out fuse.

CHORUS: Grandpa was a carpenter; he built houses, stores, and banks,
Chain smoked Camel cigarettes and hammered nails in planks.
He was level on the level, shaved even every door,
And voted for Eisenhower 'cause Lincoln won the war.

2. Well, he used to sing me "Blood on the Saddle" and rock me on his knee
And let me listen to the radio before we got TV.
Well, he'd drive to church on Sunday and he’d take me with him too.
Stained glass in every window, hearing aids in every pew. CHORUS

3. Now my grandma was a teacher, went to school in Bowling Green,
Traded in a milking cow for a Singer sewing machine.
She called her husband "Mister" and she walked real tall in pride,
And used to buy me comic books after Grandpa died. CHORUS

[E]Woke up this morning, [A]put on my slippers

[E]Venus De Milo can have my arms, [A]look out, I've got your [E]nose
[A]Sell my heart to the [E]junkman and [B7]give my love to [E]Rose. But;
CHORUS
[E]Give my feet to the footloose, [A]careless, fancy [E]free
Give my knees to the needy, don't [F#]pull that stuff on [B7]me
[E]Hand me down my walking cane, it's a [A]sin to tell a [E]lie

HUMIDITY BUILT THE SNOWMAN
(John Prine)

Does he still think about her? Why there was never really any doubt
Every time he lights a candle or blows a candle out
The scientific nature of the ordinary man
Is to go on out and do the best you can

I don't think that you know that I think you don't know
That old barometer goes crazy, baby, every time it starts to snow
You won't find me walking, 'round your part of town
Humidity built the Snowman, sunshine brought him down

This world is full of people, they never seem to fall
Somebody said they seen you, you hadn't changed at all
The fundamental story of the contemporary man
Is to walk away and someday understand

I don't think that you know that I think you don't know
That old barometer goes crazy, baby, every time it starts to snow
You won't find me walking, 'round your part of town
Humidity built the Snowman, sunshine brought him down

The scientific nature of the ordinary man
Is to go on out and do the best you can

I don't think that you know that I think you don't know
That old barometer goes crazy, baby, every time it starts to snow
You won't find me walking, 'round your part of town
Humidity built the Snowman, sunshine brought him down
Humidity built the Snowman, sunshine brought him down
Brought him down, brought him down

Song : Donald And Lydia (Mod.not to slow 3/4 timing)   By John Prine

C                         F       C
Small town bright lights Saturday night,
                           D7             G7
Pin balls and pool halls flashing their lights
         C                           F         C
Making change behind a counter in a penny arcade,
                            G7             C
Sat the fat girl daughter of Virginia and Ray (spoken) Lydia
                      F         C                               D7         G7
Lydia hid her thoughts like a cat, behind her small eyes sunk deep in her fat
          C               F          C
She read romance magazines up in her room
                               G7             C
And felt just like Sunday on Saturday afternoon

(Chorus)
G7    F                     C             G7                  C
But dreaming just comes natural like the first breath from a baby
C7       F             C                G7                        C
Like sunshine feeding daisies, Like the love hidden deep in your heart

C                      F      C
Bunkbeds shaved heads Saturday night
                               D7          G7
A ware house of strangers with sixty watt lights
C                               F       C                         G7    C
Staring though the ceiling just wanting to be, lay a one of to many a young PFC (spoken) Donald
C                                        F       C
There were spaces between Donald and what ever he said
                            D7          G7
Strangers had forced him to live in his head
    C                         F       C
He envisioned the details of romantic scenes after midnight in the stillness of
      G7         C
the barrack's latrine
(repeat chorus)
C                     F         C                           D7          G7
Hot love, cold love, no love at all, a portrait of guilt is hung on the wall
C                  F          C                      G7             C
Nothing is wrong, nothing is right, Donald and Lydia made love that night (spoken) Love
       G7   C                                 F               C
They made love in the mountains, they made love in the streams
                                           D7             G7
They made love in the valleys, they made love in their dreams
      C                                    F
But when they were finished, there was nothing to say
C                                  G7       C    C7
'Cause mostly they made love from ten miles away
(repeat chorus)

Souvenirs; When I was first performing at the Fifth Peg in Chicago, I thought I should have a new song every week so that people wouldn’t hear the same songs they heard last week. I wrote this song in my '65 Malibu on my way to the club on a Thursday night. I wish I could do that now!

SOUVENIRS
(John Prine)

All the snow has turned to water
Christmas days have come and gone
Broken toys and faded colors
Are all that's left to linger on
I hate graveyards and old pawn shops
For they always bring me tears
I can't forgive the way they rob me
Of my childhood souvenirs

CHORUS
Memories they can't be boughten
They can't be won at carnivals for free
Well it took me years
To get those souvenirs
And I don't know how they slipped away from me

Broken hearts and dirty windows
Make life difficult to see
That's why last night and this mornin'
Always look the same to me

I hate reading old love letters
For they always bring me tears
I can't forgive the way they rob me
Of my sweetheart's souvenirs

Memories they can't be boughten
They can't be won at carnivals for free
Well it took me years
To get those souvenirs
And I don't know how they slipped away from me

Starts with a great performance of "Souvenirs"

Then Sam Stone. Then Speed of the Sound of Loneliness. Then Paradis, with a melody slightly different from what I learned.

Subject: Lyr Add: ALL THE BEST (John Prine)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 12 Feb 18 - 01:34 PM

This was mentioned in a thread about divorce, so I looked it up:

ALL THE BEST
As recorded by John Prine on "The Missing Years" (1991)

I wish you love— and happiness.
I guess I wish— you all the best.
I wish you don't— do like I do,
And never fall in love with someone like you;
'Cause if you feel— just like I did,
You'd prob'ly walk around the block like a little kid.
But kids don't know;— they can only guess
How hard it is— to wish you happiness.

I guess that love— is like a Christmas card:
You decorate a tree;— you throw it in the yard.
It decays and dies— and the snowmen melt.
Well, I once knew love;— I knew how love felt.
Yeah, I knew love;— love knew me.
When I walked,— love walked with me,
And I got no hate— and I got no pride.
Well, I got— so much love that I cannot hide.
Yeah, I got— so much love that I cannot hide.

Say you drive a Chevy;— say you drive a Ford.
You say you drive around the town till you just get bored,
And then you change your mind— for somethin' else to do,
And your heart gets bored with your mind and it changes you.
Well, it's a doggone shame,— and it's an awful mess.
I wish you love;— I wish you happiness.
I wish you love;— I wish you happiness.
I guess I wish— you all the best.

[A live recording by John Prine also appears on "A John Prine Christmas" (2009). A cover by My Morning Jacket appears on "Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows: Songs of John Prine" (various artists, 2010).

[Prine explains, in the intro on the Christmas album: "I got kind of an unusual Christmas present a couple of years back. I got a divorce for Christmas. So I really didn't know what to do, so I went out and bought myself an electric train because I never had one before. And me and this friend of mine, we nailed it to the dining-room table— just 'cause we could."]

Subject: Lyr Add: THE FRYING PAN (John Prine)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 11 May 17 - 11:14 AM

This was mentioned in a thread called Food songs, but I thought it would be more appropriate here, since food is not its main theme:

THE FRYING PAN
As recorded by John Prine on "Diamonds in the Rough" (1972)

I come home from work this evenin'; there was a note in the fryin' pan,
Said: "Fix your own supper, babe; I run off with the Fuller brush man." An'—

CHORUS: I miss the way she used to yell at me, the way she used to cuss an' moan,
An' if I ever go out an' get married again I'll never leave my wife at home.

Well, I sat down at the table, screamed, an' I hollered an' cried,
An' I commenced to carryin' on till I almost lost my mind. 'Cause—CHORUS

If I ever see another salesman come a-knockin' at my door,
I'm gonna pick up a rock an' hit him on the head an' knock him down on the floor. 'Cause—CHORUS

YOUR FLAG DECAL WON'T GET YOU INTO HEAVEN ANYMORE
By John Prine
As recorded by John Prine on “John Prine” (1971)

1. While digesting Reader's Digest in the back of a dirty book store,
A plastic flag with gum on the back fell out on the floor.
Well, I picked it up and I ran outside, slapped it on my window shield,
And if I could see old Betsy Ross, tell her how good I feel.

CHORUS: But your flag decal won't get you into Heaven anymore.
They're already overcrowded from your dirty little war.
Now Jesus don't like killin', no matter what the reason's for,
And your flag decal won't get you into Heaven anymore.

2. Well, I went to the bank this morning and the cashier said to me:
"If you join the Christmas club, we'll give you ten of them flags for free."
Well, I didn't mess around a bit; I took him up on what he said,
And I stuck them stickers all over my car and one on my wife's forehead. CHORUS

3. Well, I got my window shield so filled with flags, I couldn't see,
So, I ran the car upside a curb right into a tree.
By the time they got a doctor down, I was already dead,
And I'll never understand why the man standing in the Pearly Gates said: CHORUS

[In the 3rd chorus, substitute “We’re already…” for “They’re already….”]

SPANISH PIPEDREAM
by John Prine
as recorded by John Prine on "John Prine" (1971)

1. She was a level-headed dancer on the road to alcohol,
And I was just a soldier on my way to Montreal.
Well, she pressed her chest against me about the time the jukebox broke.
Yeah, she give me a peck on the back of the neck and these are the words she spoke:

CHORUS: Blow up your TV. Throw away your paper.
Go to the country. Build you a home.
Plant a little garden. Eat a lot o' peaches.
Try and find Jesus on your own.

2. Well, I sat there at the table, and I acted real naive,
For I knew that topless lady, had somethin' up her sleeve.
Well, she danced around the barroom, and she did the hoochie-koo.
Yeah, she sang her song all night long, tellin' me what to do. (CHORUS)

3. Well, I was young and hungry, and about to leave that place,
When just as I was leavin', well, she looked me in the face.
I said, "You must know the answer." She said, "No, but I'll give it a try,"
And to this very day we been a-livin' our way, and here is the reason why:

LAST CHORUS: We blew up our TV, threw away our paper,
Went to the country, built us a home,
Had a lot o' children, fed 'em on peaches.
They all found Jesus on their own.

DEAR ABBY
As recorded by John Prine on "Sweet Revenge" (1973)

Dear Abby, Dear Abby, my feet are too long.
My hair's fallin' out 'n' my rights are all wrong.
My friends they all tell me that I've no friends at all.
Won't you write me a letter? Won't you give me a call?
Signed, Bewildered.

Bewildered, Bewildered, you have no complaint.
You are what you are, an' you ain't what you ain't,
So listen up, buster, an' listen up good:
Stop wishin' for bad luck an' knockin' on wood.

Dear Abby, Dear Abby, my fountain pen leaks,
My wife hollers at me, an' my kids are all freaks.
Ever' side I get up on is the wrong side o' bed.
If it weren't so expensive, I'd wish I were dead.
Signed, Unhappy.

Unhappy, unhappy, you have no complaint.... [etc.—same as above.]

Dear Abby, Dear Abby, you won't believe this,
But my stomach makes noises whenever I kiss.
My girlfriend tells me it's all in my head,
But my stomach tells me to write you instead.
Signed, Noisemaker.

Noisemaker, Noisemaker.... [etc.]

Dear Abby, Dear Abby, well I never thought
That me an' my girlfriend would ever get caught.
We was sittin' in the back seat just shootin' the breeze
With her hair up in curlers an' her pants to her knees.
Signed, Just Married.

Just Married, Just Married... [etc.]

Signed, Dear Abby.

The Prine Shrine has it all. The first song is called "Dear Abby" and the second line is from a song called "Donald and Lydia" (one of the few songs I know about masturbation). The title of the third escapes me.

Love that Prine, though!

Hi, Vixen - be sure to do a Forum Search and a database search for prine. I think there's a Web page full of John Prine lyrics. I'll see if I can find it.

Subject: LYREQ: John Prine Tunes?
From: Vixen
Date: 30 Apr 99 - 02:50 PM

I'm seeking some lyrics for 3 tunes I heard a friend of mine sing years ago...I think he said they were by John Prine, but I haven't been able to find them in the DT or elswhere. The friend has moved to parts unknown, so I can't ask him! Any help will be gratefully appreciated!

"Dear Abby Dear Abby / well I never thought / that me and my girlfriend / would ever get caught"

"Dreamin' just comes natural / like the first breath / from a baby / like the sunshine / feedin' daisies / like the lovin' hid deep in your heart"

"I'm goin' steady / with Iron Ore Betty / an' she's goin steady / with me"

Any ideas on titles, recordings, etc??? I remember snatches of all three songs, but not all of therm.

Many thanks!

V
