Subject: RE: Excellent Mudcat parody From: The Borchester Echo Date: 29 Mar 09 - 11:49 AM Sorry, Dick, I seem to have nicked your three-ton. I know I shouldn't mention this, but I really, really wonder if any of the participants here actually get the point of Borfolk? Cos I think they've mostly got the mentality of committee members, meself . . . (Oh dear again). |
Subject: RE: Excellent Mudcat parody From: Leadfingers Date: 29 Mar 09 - 11:53 AM I was once in a Folk Club that Ms Easby would have LOVED ! The MC actually told the audience " This is a FOLK CLUB - you are NOT here to enjoy yorselves !" Ths SAD thing is , he was NOT making a joke ! |
Subject: RE: Excellent Mudcat parody From: The Borchester Echo Date: 29 Mar 09 - 12:01 PM Erm, not at all likely. Firstly, have you not grasped that I am fundamentally sceptical of the entire concept of the revival "f*lk club" and secondly, from where did you get the impression that I was on the side of the Borfolk committee? Adult literacy classes are available, I'm told. They might offer help in extracting meaning from structured sentences. |
Subject: RE: Excellent Mudcat parody From: GUEST,Ralphie Date: 29 Mar 09 - 12:02 PM Diane Go Away Nobody is finding you funny, and your slightly (Radically) left of Chaiman Mao attitudes are beginning to annoy. So....Go away....Please. We don't actually care that you worked for some commie rag 40 years ago. So, you met Karl Dallas... So, you you were there when Steeleye formed....(actually no, but Hey) Am I Bovvered??? No No No... So just go away. What started as a lighthearted comment on a lampoon of Mudcat has been hijacked by you and Mr Miles into some sort of political rant. Enough already. We Don't care. |
Subject: RE: Excellent Mudcat parody From: The Borchester Echo Date: 29 Mar 09 - 12:15 PM Political rants I can do, having contributed to several different far left publications. However, they are far from the topic. What's wrong with the music scene, however, is the subject of this thread. It's what Borfolk was about and it's what was being pointed at (not so gently) in the spoof thread. This is what I'm addressing. So who's being off topic? If it makes some people (and I certainly don'tmean you, Ralph Jordan) uncomfortable because their lack of attention and respect for music is being exposed, so be it. That was surely the original intention of Borfolk. |
Subject: RE: Excellent Mudcat parody From: GUEST,Ralphie Date: 29 Mar 09 - 12:27 PM Diane Which part of the two words "Away" and "Go" Don't you understand? I'd much rather spend my time with the people that you are belittling in your interminable boring rants, than with the more politically correct, holier than thou group (of 1 apparently) that you represent. Stop, Desist, End...... For Goodness sake... STOP IT |
Subject: RE: Excellent Mudcat parody From: The Borchester Echo Date: 29 Mar 09 - 12:37 PM Ralph, I don't think anyone else is interested in whatever it is you're trying to convey to me. It's nothing whatsoever to do with the topic. Please talk to me offlist. |
Subject: RE: Excellent Mudcat parody From: manitas_at_work Date: 29 Mar 09 - 12:48 PM No Diane, *you're* not interested in what Ralph is saying to you or in what the majority want this thread to be about. For heavens sake, most of the contributors here are performers and organisers who are doing their bit to further folk and traditional music. The choir don't want to be preached at, they want to get back to the vestry and crack a few jokes. |
Subject: RE: Excellent Mudcat parody From: greg stephens Date: 29 Mar 09 - 12:59 PM Well, Diane, youi are stating very clearly what the thread is meant o be about. Well, I started it, and I can tell you with some confidence its purpose was actually to draw the attention ofMudcatters to an amusing, clever, and modern spoof of the Mudcat forum: in particular its mix of slightly bizarre contributors. The thread was not, for exmple, designed to be a vehicle for people to spew abuse at each other, or to tell us in excruciating detail how they used to be familiar with Borfolk and Steeleye Span and left wing politics thirty years ago.Which may of course be very interesting to some people, but perhaps not to all. Perhaps a special thread could be started for that stuff(it could be titled "Borfolk: a parody" or something, it would certainly be boring). |
Subject: RE: Excellent Mudcat parody From: NormanD Date: 29 Mar 09 - 01:44 PM I think it might be a good idea to start up a series of individual splinter threads, on the theme of how we / I have been personally affected / maligned / sticked & stoned / not been stoned / accused of being stoned / accused of wandering into the thread pilot's compartment with a loaded gun / etc etc. Then we could all chip in. This thread is fun, even more so than the one that's satirising it. I haven't laughed so much since I went to a particular left group meeting and some recently expelled ex-members were outside giving out a leaflet accusing other members of walking off (without due authorisation or democratic agreement) with two sleeping bags and a Roneo duplicating machine. Now, in case this is open to misunderstanding or misinterpretation, or just plain meshuges, here's a couple of emoticons to choose from: :) :( ;) ;( |
Subject: RE: Excellent Mudcat parody From: Gedi Date: 29 Mar 09 - 01:49 PM Well said Manitas. Now, wheres that Communion Wine gone........ |
Subject: RE: Excellent Mudcat parody From: GUEST,Ralphie Date: 29 Mar 09 - 02:05 PM Hi Greg, Manitas, Gedi, NormanD. et al Thank You. This started as a pleasant litle "Hommage" to a very tongue in cheek website, lampooning us....!!! And then it got Hi-jacked by two individuals for ends known only to themselves. One has a personal adjenda with the Editor of a certain UK magazine. Luckily he's gone now. The other just seems to hate us all!! The Borfolk stuff is a lovely and (dare I say it) loving parody of us all. If one can't laugh at oneself. what is the point of being? As I've stated before, Peter Bellamy adored his Borfolk name! So away with the miserable contributors to this thread. Start your own socio-political thread, and leave the rest of us to have a bit of harmless fun. |
Subject: RE: Excellent Mudcat parody From: NormanD Date: 29 Mar 09 - 02:16 PM Pretty much agreed. Except that I do find most of what Diane has written on this thread to be of much interest to me. I think Diane likes cats. I suspect the cat(s?) wake her up at some ungodly hour, and going on the computer is preferable to being trampled upon and left sleepless. Yes, I think the cat's to blame. Calm the cat with goat's milk, it works with mine. Which nicely brings it back round to bleating..... |
Subject: RE: Excellent Mudcat parody From: Surreysinger Date: 29 Mar 09 - 02:26 PM As Greg started the thread, and presumably knows what the topic was intended to be, all I can say is "Hear hear". |
Subject: RE: Excellent Mudcat parody From: jacqui.c Date: 29 Mar 09 - 02:37 PM Funny Idea I just had ! We havent had so much repetitive twaddle since the good old days of S******s I'd been thinking that for a while Terry. |
Subject: RE: Excellent Mudcat parody From: The Borchester Echo Date: 29 Mar 09 - 02:47 PM Hold on a cotton-pickin' minute . . . Any suggestion that I've been miserable in my contributions is an outright lie (and I don't remember Dick being that either, but he can speak for himself). I've been reading Borfolk since its first publication 30 years ago. It was funny then (as I said), and still is . . . though tinged with poignancy and frustration that the underlying, systemic problems that have existed in English trad music since the revival are, sadly, still there and improving not one wit. This is because certain elements just don't care about standards, presentation, image and professionalism. That's hardly being miserable, it's speaking the stark, unvarnished truth about how the English as a nation, alone in the world, have been conditioned and educated into despising and being ashamed of their cultural heritage. This is not solely my analysis, as borne out by liberal quoting and paraphrasing by me from a number of sources, notably The English Acoustic Collective. But Lawrence Heath, disguised as the hapless Frank, was saying it way back in Southern Rag and he's saying it now (clearly far too gently for some) in the spoof thread.. Unfortunately, some are taking this as "ooh look, aren't we quaint". No, you're letting gold slip through your fingers by not safeguarding and investing it. Off-topic alert but I didn't raise the points: One point of correction out of millions: my first major feature was on the Steeleye Span relaunch in 1971 (which was not only for the Morning Star but was extensively syndicated), but obviously I was aware of all its multitudinous components long before Ashley pressganged them.. I used to be Cecilia Sharp, great-niece of Maud Karpeles, doncha know (somebody once wrote to me believing that . . .). Oh, and did I know Karl Dallas? Yes, of course. He even propositioned me. Twice, IIRC, and he only tried it on with Anne Briggs once. And yes, Norman. Spot on re the cats. |
Subject: RE: Excellent Mudcat parody From: manitas_at_work Date: 29 Mar 09 - 03:10 PM Never mind the communion wine, what about the vicar's gin he thinks is safely hidden behind the stack of John Rutter. |
Subject: RE: Excellent Mudcat parody From: High Hopes (inactive) Date: 29 Mar 09 - 03:28 PM "what about the vicar's gin he thinks is safely hidden behind the stack of John Rutter. " so that's why the local village lovelies are performing a circle dance around Farmer Partington's haystack ? |
Subject: RE: Excellent Mudcat parody From: Surreysinger Date: 29 Mar 09 - 03:35 PM Always wondered if John Rutter had a purpose ... now I know!! |
Subject: RE: Excellent Mudcat parody From: GUEST,Kampervan Date: 29 Mar 09 - 04:10 PM Hey Ralphie, I don't think that telling any contributor to 'Go away' is particularly democratic. You and, indeed, 99% of other contributors, may not like the postings of any given individual, but why shouldn't they post? Hell, I prefer provocative to anodyne, informed to regurgitated, and acerbic to placatory. Always offering a different perspective; I can't imagine Mudcat without such contributors. Just read and reflect; don't rush to rubbish. I don't hold with cliches either. |
Subject: RE: Excellent Mudcat parody From: Rifleman (inactive) Date: 29 Mar 09 - 04:25 PM "Hey Ralphie, I don't think that telling any contributor to 'Go away' is particularly democratic." While I may or may not agree with other posters on Mudcat I will not deny them their right to post. Telling someone to go away just because you don't happen to like what they're saying is ignorant, to put not too finer point on it. (though I must admit that I have this sneaking feeling in the back of my mind that Ralphie's response is all part of the parody,[tell me it's so Joe, tell me it's so]). |
Subject: RE: Excellent Mudcat parody From: Gedi Date: 29 Mar 09 - 05:26 PM "what about the vicar's gin he thinks is safely hidden behind the stack of John Rutter. " Now you're talkin'. Lead on McDuff.... |
Subject: RE: Excellent Mudcat parody From: Richard Mellish Date: 29 Mar 09 - 05:49 PM Give the Devil his/her due. There is SOME justice in Diane's criticisms of folk clubs, and her endorsement of the criticisms implied by some of the Borfolk satire. And she HAS made a few humorous remarks in this very thread, giving the lie to accusations of a lack of humour. And she DID apologise for an unfortunate remark about the Guid Scots Tongue. However -- given a choice between an informal singaround, with a range of performers good, bad and indifferent, and the output of "the music industry" or "musbiz" (to quote two terms from Diane's postings), I'll take the informal any day. A modicum of "image and professionalism" is all to the good, but it can easily go to excess, giving the performance priority over the material. Although we're not peasants (nor the urban equivalent) in our local pub singing what we learnt from our families, we're closer to that than we are to commercial music. BTW thanks for the prompt about the banjo. I was of course looking everywhere but the furniture at the top of the page. Richard |
Subject: RE: Excellent Mudcat parody From: jacqui.c Date: 29 Mar 09 - 06:24 PM At least, in singarounds and the like we are out entertaining ourselves and, mostly, others. That, to me, is the purpose of those gatherings. I would guess if the only folk who were allowed to sing the songs were those that had them handed down from their families the whole thing would, by now, have come to a shuddering halt. |
Subject: RE: Excellent Mudcat parody From: Old Vermin Date: 29 Mar 09 - 07:28 PM 'Pint of Old Vermin' indeed. At my age? Haven't the strength. Be that Easby woman a-arguing with hersell? |
Subject: RE: Excellent Mudcat parody From: katlaughing Date: 29 Mar 09 - 07:38 PM For those who would like to have some more fun, as originally intended, I invite you to the new Mudcat Parody thread...it's moderated..only fun allowed!
