She's improved a lot and tries, but the last couple of folks sent home, especially Brandi, were WAY better. It reveals more about the voters than the dancers.

I watched the first episode and described it to Jacqui as watching a train wreck. Pathetic but you can't take your eyes off it.
She may win it. Honest - I don't care. I can't take these scripted reality shows. Saw the first episode by accident - a train wreck.
I wish no harm to anyone.
That pretty much sums it up.

For years and years the supermarket tabloids and gossip talk shows have been trying to convince the American people that clowns like Lindsey Lohan, Brittany Spears, Paris Hilton and Ana Nicole Smith are celebrities.

They are not. They are worthless airheads on drugs.

The Palin family represents a glimpse of rural America and a chance to see people who look and think like us. We like them and have every right to.

Country singers ain't as good technically as the members of the Met, but we don't care. The American people are telling the sleaze factories of Hollywood and New York to bug-off. We have had enough of their swill.

We like folks who hunt, fish, drive jeeps and listen to Country music. That's America and the Palin family is helping bring back some of the pride we have lost in recent years.

Most Americans do not hunt, fish, drive jeeps or listen to county music. As for country singers--few today are worth a shit but don't you knock Bob Wills & his Texas Playboys or I'll knock you upside the head.

A few years ago we were treated to the live adventures of Ozzie Osborne and his family.

Every third word was f**k and yet we were told they were normal.

Give me Johnny Cash, June Carter, Bob Wills or Mac Wiseman any time. You folks can keep Ozzie Osborne, Snoop Eats Dog Poop and all the other purveyors of Urban Stink Noise.
Glad that crap makes you happy.

My take is that most of the people "here" have nothing against people who hunt, fish, or drive jeeps, and that at least a few of the folks here are pretty much those people themselves. And that by far the most of us "here" have much more regard for Johnny, June, Bob Wills, and Mac Wiseman than for manufactured "Celebraties" who are famous for being famous. Some us just aren't that impressed by a woman who sets up a TV series, supposedly to showcase Alaska, and makes it into constant highly staged scenes to impress us with what a "regular" person she is, and what regular blue-collar folks she is raising her kids to be, and tries to rub the point in incessently with self-serving prattle.

Hey, PDQ, you'd be surprised how many of us damn liberals really like Johnny Cash, Bob Wills, Marty Robbins, Louvin Brothers, Dolly Parton, Hank Williams, Flatt and Scruggs, etc.--and share your sentiments about the other "musicians" in your second sentence.

But, believe it or not, that doesn't mean we're eager to have Sarah as President.

You might not understand, but there are other factors involved.   Trust me, there really are.

Sarah Palin is not qualified to be President and I have said that three or four times before on this forum. Mitt Romney will be the Republican nominee in 2012, perhaps Marco Rubio the VP nominee.

Subjecting Palin to 24/7 derision says more about her detractors than about her.

Neither should her daughter should be subjected to haterd that is re-directed from her mom.

I like the Palins. I like Joan Baez. I like fishing and own two 4WD Scouts. I like Blues and I like Bluegrass. I think Mike Auldridge, Tony Rice, David Grisman and Kenneth Burns. They are the finest musicians I have ever heard. I like to be positive.

Would some of the regular Mudcatter "lighten up" and stop being so hateful and negative. It would make this a better place to visit.

pdq, Bristol Palin is not staying alive on DWTS because she's "just like others in rural America," She's still in the running and beating out far better dancers - and just may "win" - because:
a. the judges have been afraid to evaluate her as critically and score her as fairly (i.e., as low) as they normally do contestants who dance as badly as she does. (This lessens the power of the judges' numerical scores , even when she has the lowest ordinal rankings.)
b. the show has been giving a lot of screen time to Bristol's "Mama grizzly" and the rest of the family, playing up lots of aspects of her "back story" that have nothing to do with dancing.
c. there is a huge, largely internet-based, collaborative effort to maximize the call-in and text and online votes for Bristol.

As the granddaughter and daughter of midwest farmers, I reject your apparent sweeping generalization that "rural America" finds the Palins just "like us" in the way they look think, and act and that "we like them."   Sorry, but my rural American forbears would not have admired someone who abandons elected offices mid-term just for to run for a higher office or because she can make more $ on the lecture circuit and as a media darling. Nor would they have admired a mother with several minor children, one a pregnant unwed teenager and one a Downs syndrome infant, assigning her parental responsibilities a back seat to pursuit of a high national office.

I also reject the notion that country singers ain't as good technically as opera singers. That may be true of some country stars, but it's not true of the best country singers; it's just different vocal styles.

And as for "sleaze," I'd say that both country music and the Palin family have as big a share of that as do Hollywood and New York.

At any rate, DWTS has, until this season, tried at least to some degree to winnow out the really bad dancers before it got down to the finals.   This season, but treating Caribou Barbie's daughter with kid gloves -- heck, it began when they put her in the category of "star" although her only claim to fame is having a MOTHER who ran for the Vice Presidency and now is a right-wing media 'star' -- has, IMO, lost them whatever remnant they had of being a talent show.

Oh, and saying that Bristol Palin is in no way a "star" or a good dancer is not subjecting her to hatred.    She's a quasi- household name because her Mom has acquired a high political profile and is what many would call a "media whore." (Does Mama Palin seek the media spotlight because she wants glory, political influence, or money? Or all of the above?) Bristol has also been in the media spotlight more than the other Palin kids because of being an unwed teen mom.   None of that makes her, to my way of thinking, either a "star" or a "celebrity."

But I think most people who are outraged or just annoyed at Bristol's "beating out" several much better dancers on DWTS feel that way just because, even though she has improved since the beginning of the season, she just plain does not have what it takes to be a good dancer.   She lacks energy, fluidity, intensity, style connection to the music, etc., even when she manages to get all the steps down.    I can't think of anyone who's made the finals on that show who was as clunky and robotic and un-entertaining as Bristol is.

"...the same passion..."    Might not always be such a good idea.   If Sarah runs in 2012, the passion is likely to be on her side.    Obama, like all presidents going for a second term, will have to be running primarily on competence, not passion, and will be judged in large part on the economy--regardless of the fact that presidents have limited leverage over it.    They always take credit or blame for it anyway.

Bristol Palin's Death Threats Have Gotten So Bad, The DWTS After Party Is On Lock Down! EXCLUSIVE!

With all the death threats and heightened security surrounding the season finale of Dancing with the Stars, we hear the party to celebrate the winners is going to be on lockdown…but we have all the details!
People are sending talcum powder to Bristol Palin. Her partner, Mark Balls, is reportedly receiving death threats. Still, those are no reasons to cancel a Dancing with the Stars finale party! However, we hear extra precautions will be taken, just in case…

"They are trying to keep it very hush-hush because of the death threats towards Bristol," a source tells Hollywoodlife.com.

We know the location of the party, but to protect the cast from the crazies, we have to keep mum on that. We can tell you, however, it's going to be at one of the "regulars" when it comes to celebrations in Hollywood.

Have you ever seen a reality competition finale stir up so much controversy? All eyes are definitely going to be on DWTS tonight!

"Security is apparently going to be epic to make sure nothing happens to her or Mark or anyone for that matter," our source says. Are we talking armed guards around the catering table or metal detectors at the valet station? We'll just have to wait and see.

" The Roman Empire's decline had nothing on us." ~ Ebbs

There are two Americas.

One is found in the big cites and is as degenerate as anything the ancient Greek or Roman cities fell into.

Good news is that rural and small-town America still has traditional values, clean water, fresh air, good schools and reasonly well-adjusted people.

What keeps things going down hill is that the cities have all the votes.

Akenaton, I wasn't saying I would fault a mother for pursuing national office while she had several kids at home, including a Downs syndrome infant -- any more than I would a father who did the same.   I'm saying my rural American grandparents probably wouldn't have admired a person for doing that. And I do find it a bit ironic, to say the least, when the "family values" and "I'm not a feminist" crowd of "conservatives" applaud such a decision.

pdq,
If " rural and small-town America still has traditional values, clean water, fresh air, good schools and reasonly well-adjusted people," why are they so often the ones who vote against environmental protection, renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, public schools, etc., and in favor of unrestricted gun posession and use?

And the cities have all the votes, in situations where the popular vote counts, but the rural, low-population states have disproportionately large electoral voting power and really, really disproportionately large influence in the US Senate.   Wyoming has as much Senate power as does California.

Perhaps the real lesson is the mentality of the kind of people who take something like Dancing-Half-Nekkid-With the Stars dead seriously, regardless of their political stance. On the one side you have people who would stuffa a ballot box to vote for me as the world's greatest swimmer, if they thought I exemplified their right-wing fanaticism, so long as I didn't get eliminated from the competition by drowning, which would be all too likely. On the other, death threats against a young woman over the possible outcome of a so-called competition among people who are invited to take part because they are famous for being famous.

How many seasons before the debut of the series "America's Funniest Violent Deaths"?

Paris Hilton became a celebrity by releasing a video of her engaging in oral sex. Bristol gained celebrity from being pregnant out of wedlock while her mother campaigned for VICE president.
Celebrity can now be established by being a rather stiff and contrived dancer. She does not move with liquidity, she moves with rigidity as if there is a stick in her backside. I have known large limbed women who knew how to move. Bristol does not.

Poor Bristol...

Not the best dancer in Hollywood, or even on her reality show.

Gotta million dollars, a beautiful baby, a pretty face, but the shame of being ordinary. How horrid...

Why oh, why, didn't she lose the pregnancy and go to college so she could apply to law school in hopes of getting a law degree and becoming an assistant district attorney in Bowie or somewhere? Why? Assistant district attorneys are so happy and her life is so terrible.

Poor us...

How wrong it is that she has imposed herself so brutally on our defenseless living rooms. How wrong it is that people persistently like people that we don't.

Have I got all the key points of this thread?

Well, the judges overscored Bristol and/or underrated Jennifer Gray (scored her too low) tonight, but when the dust settled, Bristol came in 3rd out of the 3 finalists.

This proves there really is some vestige of order and justice in the universe, however minor.

Now if Mama Sarah would just stay off the TV for a day or so ...

Jennifer Grey deserved it, and I think the judges scores were fair. I got the impression that the votes didn't count for enough to make up for a seriously lower score. This is a good thing, when people were voting for political reasons instead of because they thought she was the best dancer. On the other hand, people who aren't into the Palin politics may have been voting for the best dancer, although that hunky Rick Fox tempted me to actually call in.

People can't seem to focus on anything but their own prejudices, whether it's pro something or anti something. It's not about anything but what they want it to be about. Of course, when the show identiies a person as a "teen activist" they are expecting that sort of reaction, but I don't know what else they could have labeled her that sounded positive.

Bristol probably gained more from the competition than anyone else. Her dancing improved but at best it put her to the point where Jennifer Grey and several others started. But she did improve and she became more comfortable talking into a microphone and camera. Most,if not all, the other contestants already had developed some sort of on camera persona, some element of agility, and some even had dance experience.

I cannot think of any justification for hate mail or death threats. Even frustration at the fact that far better dancers were being eliminated should not have been directed at Bristol. That was the result of her supporters.

I lived in a so-called redneck area of Alberta years back. Lemme tell something about that experience.

1) The area had someone from it who announced she was lesbian. The local reaction from people who knew her--and in small towns everyone knows everyone--and their reaction was, `Yeah, and so?`

2) People of colour--when it was remarked by `outsiders` that they were people of colour--would be told, `Yeah, and so?`

I don`t buy into stereotypes. The rednecks I knew didn`t. And one way or other, I think we shouldn`t, either.

IMO and FWIW

Uh, 99.9? Can we swap some of our rednecks for some of your rednecks?
Please?

"Good news is that rural and small-town America still has traditional values, clean water, fresh air, good schools and reasonably well-adjusted people."

... and meth labs, illegitimate babies, rampant alcoholism and open anti-semitism and racism. And firebombed mosques (Murfreesboro, TN). And shot-dead 'liberals' (Knoxville, TN). And assassinated doctors (Dr. Tiller).

For every 'reasonably well-adjusted' rural person, I can find an example of crazy. Let's not get into that. Your image is not in keeping with reality, and I suspect mine isn't so hot, either. This shows the problem with using strawman examples, both good and bad.

What counts is what's inside. Sarah Palin seems to have the knack for extracting money from people who want to be lied to, but has no solutions for the complex problems we face. Is there a Palin Plan for, say, global warming? As an Alaskan, she surely knows about sea ice melting and glaciers shrinking, so it's right up her alley to propose a real solution. I haven't heard one. Just kvetching. She's quick to take umbrage, slow to bring positive solutions.

Let's judge her by her actions, then. So, is she a grifter or 'presidential timber?' When she provides more than just 'mama grizzly' images and grand, empty gestures and phrases, then we can answer that question. Till she does so, though, I'll come down on 'grifter' every time.

Bob

Pathetic but you can't take your eyes off it.

Why not? Someone holdong a gun to your head or glued your eyes open with "crazy glue"?

Hit the fu$kin switch.

Months after the election when contemplating whether or not to resign her office as Governor of Alaska a former presidential adviser suggested for her to stay on. Learn to negotiate, travel a little, broaden herself on the many issues facing the country. Apply herself w/due diligence to Alaskan problems was his advice. Her respone? "Those aren't exactly my options right now. I've got several trumped up ethics violation claims and people can walk right up to my house. No, I'm going to resign." 3 weeks later she signs a book deal. She's a shallow intellectual as well as an abusive politician. Check out what she did w/her ex brother-in-law.

Oh, wait a sec...this thread is about BRISTOL Palin. Nevermind.
