Hot on the heels of new build A1 Tornado, the Great Western Society (GWS) have recently announced that they are going to build a 47XX 2-8-0 heavy freight loco. Basicly a Hall class on severe steriods, the 47s were employed on heavy fast night freight turns, which earned them the nikname, Night Owls. Time to build? Probably not as long as Tornado due to Swindons standardisation policy (Hall boiler etc). This one's going to worth watching!

The A1 Trust arn't hanging around either, they are looking into building a P2 2-8-2!

Who said steam is dead?! Bring it on lads!

Wassail!! Chris

A magical age. I go on two steam train trips each year. Sadly the younger generation don't seem interested. One local group who restored an engine some years back are in fear the project could soon come to an end due to poor ticket sales over the past 12 months. It was a poor summer weatherwise in the UK.

The younger generation are interested when you can grab their imagination, there's a group who plan to build a 'Baby Deltic' from a class 37, the Class 15 and Co-Bo guys are doing great things. Possibly if we could turn their talents from turning a Citron Saxo into a low riding sound machine, into a T9 high stepping Geryhound sound machine, I'm more than willing to help, all we need is a spark.

Poor ticket sales, and a lack of revenue are part of the current economic climate (I'm not going to get dragged into politics or any other debate on this thread). All the preserved railways are feeling the pinch at the moment, but we rode the storm in the eighties, and I'm sure we will again. Let's just give a bit of a cheer and support for the guys with the vision, ambition, and sheer bloody mindedness, to make things like this happen.

Sorry, I forgot about the new Patriot build, and the new Clan, And the Bloomer, and The J94............ And some silly bugger might want to build a Bullied Leader........Now where did I put those blueprints?

Wassail!! Chris

Sadly the younger generation don't seem interested.

Nostalgia just ain't what it used to be! Next there'll be a thread on attracting young folk to steam (not Steamfolk, which is something very different). Lot's of young Steampunks though, and some truly great things happening there...

Wonderful Steam

And some silly bugger might want to build a Bullied Leader. Bring it on !! Chance to show what an inoventive designer he was. But Narrow gauge loco's are still being built from scratch.

A fantastic trip on the Cumbres & Toltec scenic railroad, with narrow guage steam locomotives from c. 1900 and old time cars. It is the highest and longest coal-fired steam narrow guage, reaching above 10,000 feet in altitude in the high country along the New Mexico-Colorado border.
The all-day trip is sure to interest even the most jaded teenager. A stop for lunch in a high altitude setting allows time to look at the alpine flowers.
The area if far from 5-star hotels and city amenities, which adds to the experience.

Well let's hope they don't make such a mess of it as the Tornado mob did, partly at least through an arrogant assumption that the old steam engineers didn't know what they were doing. Result: hollow stays that broke with temperature cycling, severe pincushioning of the firebox, and a year out of service when still brand new.

There's also a big threat on the horizon: ERTMS is proposed to be rolled out over many main lines in the next 20-25 years- it's already in place on the Shrewsbury- Aberystwyth/ Pwllheli line. This requires the signalling system to be able to control the loco, so the throttle and braking system if not the valve gear too will have to be able to be operated remotely. They will also have to make room underneath for the "balises", the signalling sensors, and sacrifice some tender space to the electronics.

Paul, I think Menningham Dampflokwerk have had a major hit on their work, buggering up Tornados boiler is one thing, totally mis-building the C15 boiler for Australia, thats something else. It's the first time a new boiler has been returned to the builders. The A1 Trust arn't to blame for the failing of the boiler, its gone through more hot to cold cycles than would have been expected of an A1 boiler in normal service. Yes, the old boilersmiths have a wealth of knowlage, which needs to be handed down to the younger generation, but getting the youth of today be interested in a trade which pays little for much hard and dirty work, thats really hard.

Ah, the joys of working on arcane, individual, and bloody annoying machines! Why do we do it?

Wassail!! Chris

And then there's all the might-have-beens.

How about the Lancashire and Yorkshire 4-cylinder 2-10-0 that was cancelled because of the First World War?

Look, if we're going to waste pots of money on a sleeve valve engine that doesn't work, how about this one?

I forgot. I was going to suggest a new build English Electric GT3 but I see someone else got there first! Sensible size, sensible fire extinguisher.
