Good boiler, but Bulleid should have known better than to use chain drive for the valve gear. Hadn't he ever had a bike? The rebuild did them a lot of good. One of the best boiler and steamway designs not by Chapelon though.

Unfortunately it was on the slow line and the untrimmed bushes were in the way - never mind, it was a wonderful sight with I think 13 or 14 pullman coaches.

Thankyou.It's a shame that Bullied never got the chance to be CME of BR instead of Riddles. Don't get me wrong the standard classes were all really good and Riddles did a first class job, but can you imagine how experimental Bullied might have been? The Leader class could have paved the way for a whole new style and development of future locos. I've seen no end of drawings of spamcan tank engines. Make a great picture, an air smoothed Z class !!

The transition to Diesel wasn't just the result of oil lobbying- the steam loco is sadly inefficient, and it's difficult to see how even the best engineering brains available could have made it much better. Even with Porta's innovations, the diesel is far more attractive, especially where duty is intermittent.

That's not to say I prefer looking at Diesels to steam...

As for Bulleid, he was a bit gone with the fairies by that time, and his turf- burner could't hope to compete even with the botched first attempt at Dieselisation in Ireland. Crossleys indeed!

I'm glad you liked the picture, I cannot describe the anticipation of seeing it during the 20 minutes I was waiting in high chilly winds in a very open area! Daft really but it just proves my theory on being 18 for life!

You are quite right about the excitement and anticipation. When I lived and worked in York, I had good friends at the NRM who would give me running times for locos coming out of York. I remember waiting for Hardwicke one day and being an hour late back to the museum that I worked in but it was worth it. I also clocked the midland compound and leander, the duchess and so many others.That feeling has been with me since I was five or younger (A long time ago now) when my dad and I would walk to Sydenham hill on a Sunday to watch the Golden Arrow going past, often with a Bullied pulling it.It was still there a few weeks back when I got the chance to see Gresley and Union of S.A at Church Fenton. It was there when I worked on the NYMR laying track and guarding, when I was on the Bluebelland others and it's there every chance I get to see a steam locomotive.

For the rest of the uncivilised world try this...

Yes, it's a repeated typo !! Not poor spelling.(Dodgy keyboard,sticky keys and slight delay. A good new one at reasonable price is hard to find on an island) So you'll just have to put up with it. I DO apoligise for not checking it before submission. By the way, half the letters are missing too, so it's guesswork sometimes. *Will try harder next time.
