The London Midland and Scottish Railway Stanier Class 5 4-6-0, commonly known as the Black Five, is a class of 4-6-0 steam locomotives. It was introduced by William Stanier and built between 1934 and 1951, of which 842 were built.

18 have been preserved, of which 5 are still operational and mainline certified. However, I am yet to see one in recent years.

Funnily enough, I never saw a shiny one back in the 1950s, they were always filthy!

Restored ones exist on the Keighley and Worth Valley, East Lancashire and North York Moors Railways - All of which I visit at varying frequencies so I shall look out for them :-)

Some years ago my wife and I went on a day steam excursion from Lancaster down to Preston then across to the Settle and Carlisle, upto carlisle and back. We were hauled by a preserved Jubilee but on the return to Preston another excursion hauled by a Black 5 pulled in on the other side of the platform.
There was much photography of the two locos sitting side by side in the slowly swirling mist of late evening, augmented by escaping steam.

It was Leander.

On the section down from Lancaster to Preston we had to run fast to fit in between the intercity expresses. We were going over 90mph at times.

Black five and K1 are used on the Fort William to Malaig train daily. The Jacobite ,(Black 5' No 45407, 'The Lancashire Fusilier) one of the greatest scenic rides

Just noticed how similar Black Fives are to 8Fs, or 48 thousanders as we used to call them!
