Subject: RE: Doc Watson in hospital From: wysiwyg Date: 24 May 12 - 07:17 PM Here's the initial blurb linked above: Doc Watson hospitalized John Lawless | May 24, 2012 | 0 Comments We have learned that legendary guitarist and folk singer Doc Watson is hospitalized in Winston-Salem, NC. He is 89 years old. According to two close friends of Watson's, Doc fell on Monday and was taken to a regional hospital near his home. After taking a turn for the worse, he was airlifted to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem where he is being treated for what may be a case of pneumonia. Though unconfirmed at this point, there is the possibility that Doc is also suffering from kidney failure. We will update as we are able to obtain further details. === Rest easy, Doc. God has loved you for a long time so have us'ns! Don't go till He calls, now. ~Susan |

Subject: RE: Doc Watson in hospital (May 2012) From: GUEST,Jean in B'ham Date: 24 May 12 - 10:20 PM Praying Doc doesn't go till the time is right - not sick in a hospital. But he has a Saviour in Jesus, so we know God'll take good care of him when the time comes. God bless you, Doc! We love you! |
Subject: RE: Doc Watson in hospital (May 2012) From: Owen Woodson Date: 25 May 12 - 05:59 AM I suppose it had to happen eventually. Even so the news is very sad and, although the odds against him pulling through sound pretty steep, I for one am hoping that he'll live to enjoy a few more years yet. Of all the thousands of musicians and singers I've listened to down through the years, I can't think of one who has brought me more sheer pleasure than Doc. |

Subject: RE: Doc Watson in hospital (May 2012) From: Dan Schatz Date: 25 May 12 - 10:19 AM Doc went through surgery last night to relieve an impacted colon. Any surgery is very serious at his age and this is considered major. Word is (third hand) that he came through well and is his next step withh likely be to a nursing home. Whether this is expected to be permanent or temporary is unclear to me. Dan |

Subject: RE: Doc Watson in hospital (May 2012) From: Owen Woodson Date: 25 May 12 - 01:16 PM One of the first records of Old Time Music I ever owned had Doc singing Hicks' Farewell, with Gaither Carlton (I think) on fiddle. Now seems a very appropriate time to share it. My time is swiftly rolling on When I must faint and die; My body to the dust return And there fergotten lie. Let persecution rage around And Antichrist appear; My silent dust beneath the ground There's no disturbance there. To call poor sinners to repent And seek their Savior dear. My brother preachers, boldly speak And stand on Zion's wall. Confirm the drunk, confirm the weak And after sinners call. My loving wife, my bosom friend, The object of my love, The time's been sweet l've spent with you, My sweet and harmless dove, My little children near my heart My warm affections know. From each the path will I attend. O from them can I go?! O God, a father to them be And keep them from all harm, That they may love and worship Thee And dwell upon Thy charm. How often you have looked fer me And often seen me come. But now I must depart from thee And nevermore return. My loving wife, don't grieve fer me, Neither lament nor mourn; Fer I will with my Jesus be And dwell upon his charm. |

Subject: RE: Doc Watson in hospital (May 2012) From: open mike Date: 28 May 12 - 10:26 AM from May 28, Winston Salem Journal http://www2.journalnow.com/news/2012/may/28/watson-remains-critical-ar-2313363/ Doc Watson's family was called to his bedside Sunday after he took a turn for the worse, his manager said. "Doc did have a pretty difficult day today," Mitch Greenhill, Watson's manager, said in the evening. "But he pulled through." Watson remained in critical condition at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, a hospital spokesperson said. Watson, 89, had surgery Thursday to remove a blockage in his colon. He remains in the hospital's intensive care unit. His management company, Folklore Productions International, had posted an update Saturday that he had undergone a follow-up procedure to Thursday's surgery. Watson, who was born in Deep Gap and is blind, is known as a master of the flatpicking style of guitar playing. He has won eight Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award. He was awarded the National Medal of Arts and a National Heritage Fellowship. Watson has also played at Carnegie Hall and on the lawn of the White House. He started MerleFest, an annual gathering of musicians in Wilkesboro named after his son, who died in a tractor accident in 1985. |
