Subject: Woody Guthrie's Jewish connections
From: GUEST,Will Kaufman

I'm seeking information for a book project on Woody Guthrie's Jewish and Yiddish connections - not merely through his marriage to Marjorie Greenblatt Mazia, but also the milieu of the largely Jewish left into which he was immersed both in New York and Los Angeles. Any advice or suggestions about contacts and personages would be most appreciated.

I've heard Nora Guthrie, Woody's daughter, do a fascinating lecture on this very subject. The name of the talk was "On Holy Ground."

The members of the Klezmatics immersed themselves in Woody's Jewish-orieneted writings and set many of them to music.

It's too bad Moe Asch and Harold Leventhal have passed away. They would have been good to talk to.

You might want to talk to Michael Asch -- the son of Moe Asch of Folkways Records. Last time I saw Michael he was a proferssor in Edmonton. I think he may be retired now.

Many thanks! I just saw Nora and Michael Asch last week in Edmonton - he's on the case!

You know Pete Seeger and Fred Hellerman would probably know too. Of course their memories are probably not what they used to be

Come to that, if Jim Longhi's still alive, he would probably be able to help.

Do I sense another book about Woody in the offing?

Will, if you can share some of the information you dig up, many of us would be very interested. This thread might be a good place to post it.
Thanks.

Tom Paley knew and played with Woody, he may be able to help but I guess you have contacted him already. Then of course there are John Cohen and Elliott Adnopoz.

Hoot
