Hi,

I'm new here, so apologies for any missteps.

A few years ago I heard a beautiful recording of 'Shule Aroon'/'Siuil a Run'/'Johnny Has Gone For A Soldier' and now I can't remember who sang it or on what album. For a long time I thought it was Tommy Makem and the Clancy Brothers or some subgroup of them, but I can't find it in their discography. It was definitely that style, though--a male voice, I think accompanied with guitar or banjo or something, but not heavy instrumentation; very acoustic.

I'm hoping someone will be able to pinpoint this recording! Thanks in advance :)

J

Can't recall Len singing it but he'd certainly make a good job of it if he did
You really should try to find one of the source singers singing it - Elizabeth Cronin makes a superb job of it as does Liam Clancy's mother 'Mamo' Clancy

It was recorded on “Music of Ireland” by Quilty (the original, Irish Quilty) in 1979. Sung by Eamonn Toland backed by Malcolm Wray and Ian Stevenson (and possibly Joe McHugh but Joe would have to confirm).

Thank you all for the suggestions! I think I might have been conflating Mrs. Clancy's version with something else. Anyway, now I have lots of lovely recordings to listen to :)

Doctor Who had the Jon Pertwee incarnation singing a song that involved a lot of "aroon" if I remember rightly.

Sorry for the thread drift.
