Subject: New Song Book Available soon... From: RTim Date: 02 Jun 20 - 12:26 PM SOUTHERN SONGSTER ENGLISH FOLK SONGS FROM THE HAMMOND AND GARDINER MANUSCRIPTS Selected by Nick Dow Musical notation by Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne With notes by Steve Gardham The Hammond and Gardiner manuscripts are amongst the most important nineteenth-century collections of English folk song. PRE-ORDER – AVAILABLE IN JUNE £15.00 https://francisboutle.co.uk/products/southern-songster/?fbclid=IwAR28KTHsFQdPjptlTqxBOzdd2_-wrSvM2xGwnza_nZUyYpLpHuCgMvSJBn8 It is over fifty years since Frank Purslow edited Marrow Bones, the influential book of folk songs collected by Robert and Henry Hammond and George Gardiner in Hampshire and Dorset between 1905 and 1908. Purslow went on to produce The Wanton Seed, The Constant Lovers and The Foggy Dew (the last two reprinted in 2017 as Southern Harvest) – 350 songs in all out of a total of 2,400. Southern Songster makes available a further 100 songs and ballads that have not seen the light of day for over a century. There are some unique tunes and texts, as well as interesting versions of songs already visited by Purslow. The musical notation has been supplied by Cohen Braithwaite Kilcoyne, and the song notes have been supplied by Steve Gardham who has added considerably to our knowledge of these important nineteenth-century collections, while Tim Radford introduces ten chanties. Above all this book is a collection of songs to to be sung and we hope that the new generation of singers who are raising the flag for traditional folk song will find our volume as important as the invaluable works of the late Frank Purslow. |

Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon... From: Jack Campin Date: 03 Jun 20 - 03:06 AM Stellar cast of people involved in producing it. Should be great. |

Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon... From: Steve Gardham Date: 03 Jun 20 - 08:00 AM Still a bit of proofing needed but a matter of a couple of weeks should see it off. Too kind, Jack! But thanks. Thanks for the heads up, Tim. |
Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon... From: Jim Carroll Date: 03 Jun 20 - 08:16 AM Looking forward to it - it seems great value considering it's importance One of these days someone will tackle the Grainger collection - and, dare one suggest, make a better job of the BBC project These collections are essential to our understanding of our song heritage Is there going to be a hardback edition - I can see this being very used ? Thanks Jim |

Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon... From: Steve Gardham Date: 03 Jun 20 - 05:51 PM Nick said something about the previous volume Southern Songster getting another run-off. The only one that I know is still available is Marrow Bones. EFDSS have several copies for sale I'm told. Although we worked together on the notes, Malcolm's detailed stamp is marked all over it. |
Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon... From: RTim Date: 03 Jun 20 - 06:32 PM I believe The Wanton Seed has been given a new printing..... Tim Radford |
Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon... From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 05 Jun 20 - 04:45 AM It is worth mentioning that if you do not read music, every single song has a Midi file available. Click on the file and it plays the tune. They are being submitted to the Full English Website under each song, or you can have them from me as a transfer when the book is purchased. The book has been a long time coming but I think it will be worth it. |
Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon... From: RTim Date: 05 Jun 20 - 10:21 AM Good News Nick...How will they be indexed on the Full English site - ie. if a song is made of from more than one source...which source song will they be under..?? Tim Radford (and looking forward to see all...) |
Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon... From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 05 Jun 20 - 11:37 AM The best way would be to search by singer and Roud number, in advanced search, then scroll down the result to the Midi. The gentleman who looks after the Midi files for the Full English lives in Australia. We submitted the files to him in the acceptable format about two months ago. I have no idea if they have been attached on the website as yet. I'll have a look when I can. Nick |
Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon... From: Steve Gardham Date: 05 Jun 20 - 02:05 PM Tim, presumably the midi file will be attached to whoever's version we took the tune from. That seems reasonable. Although some texts, as in previous volumes, have been collations, the tunes are all single source. |
Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: RTim Date: 05 Jun 20 - 03:01 PM Steve....(and Nick).....When I wrote I was not thinking as clearly as I should have...Yes, your answer is now obvious to me....and I also had a peek at the pre-print copy I have and looked at who provided the tunes for each song..... All publicity is good publicity..... Tim Radford |
Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: Steve Gardham Date: 05 Jun 20 - 06:00 PM Just had a peek at the cover. Lovely woodcut of what I think is a cuckoo but I'd prefer a blackbird just because my favourite songster is he. |
Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 05 Jun 20 - 07:15 PM Clive tells me it's a song thrush. Advance sales so far are encouraging. Good News. |
Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: Joe Offer Date: 05 Jun 20 - 07:21 PM I've bought books from this publisher before, and their service to the US is very good. For me, the price of the book was £15.00, plus £7.00 for shipping here to California. |
Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: Jim Carroll Date: 06 Jun 20 - 02:55 AM I asked earlier if it would be issued in hard-back form Jim |
Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 06 Jun 20 - 03:59 AM Sorry Jim so you did. I think at the moment with things as they are we have to test the water, financially before we dive in. Then we have to see how the book is received. Your input as well as others will be valued. Then we can decide on the viability of a further run. kind regards Nick |
Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: Jim Carroll Date: 06 Jun 20 - 05:03 AM Thanks Nick I'll gat a paperback for now but I would guess I'll need a hardback Good luck with it Jim |
Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: Reinhard Date: 06 Jun 20 - 05:28 AM Have the previous books The Wanton Seed and Southern Harvest been released as hardbacks? I can't remember having seen them in this format. |
Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: Steve Gardham Date: 06 Jun 20 - 08:49 AM None of the books in this series have ever been issued as hardbacks. Keeping costs down is essential with books of this sort. I might be wrong but what would be the advantage of a hardback anyway? When I get a book, and I have a couple of thousand, all I'm interested is what's inside it. Some of them are falling apart but that's actually the hardbacks anyway. Just curious! My original copies of the Purslow editions, apart from Foggy Dew which was badly bound, are all still in one piece after 50 years. |
Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: Jim Carroll Date: 06 Jun 20 - 09:32 AM The Purslow became unusable very quickly Beside the point really Steve - I'll welcome any improvement in the way of untampered-with texts and fuller notes and hope to use them and pass them on to whoever gets them (Limerick Uni., in our case) in a form I hope they can continue to be used There are some I wouldn't bother with and others which are no loner replaceable - I was hoping this would,t be one of I could get in a solid form Jim |
Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 06 Jun 20 - 10:35 AM Well we're certainly not ruling that out Jim. Please let us know your thoughts when you receive your copy. |
Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: GUEST,Hootenanny Date: 06 Jun 20 - 11:02 AM To Joe Offer Joe you appear to be getting off light. Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 06 Jun 20 - 02:18 PM I am hoping to make the book available to overseas customers by PDF download. I assume this can then be viewed by tablet or kindle. Watch this space. |
Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 07 Jun 20 - 02:52 AM I'm told Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne will be singing a song from the book and posting it on line. I'll flag it up when it's available. |
Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: Reinhard Date: 07 Jun 20 - 03:42 AM Cohen is a wonderful singer; I'm looking forward to this -- and of course to the book too which I ordered just after your annoucement. |
Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: Steve Gardham Date: 07 Jun 20 - 05:58 AM Absolute agreement, Reinhard. For me the very top, but there are many great young singers of traditional material in England. |

Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: RTim Date: 07 Jun 20 - 11:06 AM Excuse me - but I am taking a liberty by posting here one of the songs from the new book as recorded by me on my CD - "From Spithead Roads" it is the song "The Fair Maid of Bristol" - Roud 17811 - that was only ever collected twice, both by Dr. Gardiner in The New Forest, Hampshire - My old home area, being born less than 4 miles from where the song was collected from Fred Osman in 1908. https://soundcloud.com/tim-radford/the-fair-maid-of-bristol Tim Radford |

Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: Steve Gardham Date: 07 Jun 20 - 04:55 PM The project I'm currently working on involves going through the Hammond Gardiner Mss again, and I've already come across enough unpublished material for another book, but current project needs finishing first. |
Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 07 Jun 20 - 07:19 PM Funny you should say that Steve...… I am reading and making notes on every tune in Hammond, I just want to hear what they heard. Comes of being mad on unwritten history. |
Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: RTim Date: 07 Jun 20 - 07:23 PM There is still an awful lot to be found in Gardiner.......and that is without adding to texts from other collectors (well - maybe just a little...)....But then as a proud Hampshire man I am always going to claim that. Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: Joe Offer Date: 18 Jun 20 - 10:16 PM I got notice today that my book had shipped. I can hardly wait. I have a Kentish friend here in California who has been working on a book since I met him in about 1993. It's a collection of British political songs for the period 1750-1850. He's finally ready to publish it. I've been very impressed with Francis Boutle, so I suggested he might want to publish his book through Boutle in the UK. The University of Notre Dame Press did a nice job of publishing Dan Milner's recent book in the US, so I recommended that my friend try Notre Dame for US publishing. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 19 Jun 20 - 11:45 AM I've just been chatting to Clive Boutle, Joe if you contact me on thetraditionbearer@hotmail.co.uk we'll talk on. Your book has been posted by the way. |

Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 24 Jun 20 - 06:22 AM I have now got MIDI files for all the books (i.e. everything except 'Marrowbones') Thanks to Graham Pratt. Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: r.padgett Date: 06 Jul 20 - 07:53 AM Southern Songster ~ review English folk songs from the Hammond and Gardiner Manuscripts ISBN 978 1 8380928 01 As the title says a South of England collection of over 100 songs from Hampshire and Dorset selected by Nick Dow with musical notation by Cohen Braithwaite – Kilcoyne. Steve Gardham provides 54 pages of song notes on many songs that I have never heard of ~ titles like “The three worms” and “The tinker’s old budget”. Although there are some other popular traditional songs like “Adieu Sweet Lovely Nancy” and “Barbara Allen” Yes times have changed but the folk song collectors of the time would have encountered and collected songs that were current at the time. Many of these songs have entered into the folk repertoire of floor singer s and professionals alike. The Southern Songster is a welcome addition for enthusiasts old and young to get their teeth into, so to speak. Steve also supplies the Roud index numbers and makes reference to audio sources available on CD and online with references to notes and tunes .Where possible CDs where songs have been recorded by traditional and current younger folk artists such as Brian Peters, Bella Hardy, Lucy Ward, Eliza Carthy and Bryony Griffith are given. I was drawn to “Yorkshire Park”, which I know as “Sheffield Park” and “Cruel Mother” both of which are on the Yorkshire Garland website of course with audios of Frank Hinchliffe and Jim Eldon, respectively. The addition of ten shanties is also welcome as the main shanty “bibles” have been hard to locate and festivals and folk gatherings do tend to like full blown shanties with “big” choruses! Ray Padgett July 6th 2020 |
Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 06 Jul 20 - 06:59 PM Thanks for that Ray. I'll pass it on to all concerned. |
Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: Rumncoke Date: 06 Jul 20 - 10:45 PM I have spent time during the lockdown trying to learn to read music - again - and having got somewhere with it, I have spent a bit on books with tunes in - luckily my income was not entirely lost. I have left it a bit late in life to get to grips with the dots - but it just goes to show, you can teach an old dog new tricks. I have even been writing a few new verses where I felt there was a need for explanation or variation. Never did really go for the died for love or man walks away sniggering endings, so I have devised a few which I find more satisfactory. I am going to need another bookcase before long though. |
Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 07 Jul 20 - 06:48 AM Editing and rewriting is actively encouraged in Southern Songster. The more versions of the songs that are produced the better. Time will tell which ones survive. Martin Carthy encouraged me to read music and sing from the page. It is very useful. When you find the root note, and work out the scale and accidentals, it's easier than you think. Rumncoke you are welcome to the Mp3 files of the tunes if it will help your studies. My Email is as above. |
Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 08 Jul 20 - 07:33 AM Here is a bit of feedback about the book. There will be a second run with corrections by the end of July, pre orders are being taken now. It is so important that all of our wonderful traditional songs are collected and registered in book form for us and for future generations to absorb and enjoy. Southern Songster does this in the best possible manner. Martyn Wyndham-Read Carefully-edited genuine traditional songs - words, music and detailed historical notes - a feast for the singer and scholar. Steve Roud A fine continuation of a great series of new editions. Rod Stradling ‘A splendid achievement’ Alan Bearman Sidmouth Folk Week |
