Subject: RE: Martin Carthy Concert May 1 - online!!
From: Joe Offer
Date: 17 Apr 21 - 12:01 PM

Email from Janie Meneely:
We did it! We've persuaded Martin Carthy to do an on-line concert, Saturday, May 1st. 8 pm UK time (which translates to 3 pm on the US east coast; noon on the US west coast; and the wee hours of the morning in Australia).

Please, please, please! spread the word!! UK musicians really got slammed by the COVID lockdowns and universal prohibition on live gatherings of any sort. God forbid we should have sung together in the same room! Meanwhile, Martin told me he hasn't had a gig for . . . and then he couldn't even remember! Here's yet another musician who hasn't seen a paycheck for months on end. He is eager to perform, even if it's to an invisible audience.

The concert is free, BUT we are suggesting £8-$10 per person (more if you can) that will go 100% to the artist. In order to avoid scammers, we're keeping the link out of circulation; instead, we're asking people to pre-register (email janiemeneely@gmail.com or through one of the event's cosponsors: Folklore Society of Greater Washington, Old Songs, Folk Music Society of New York, and the Folk Song Society of Greater Boston).

We're hoping for a groundswell of support for Martin.

    Cheers,
    Janie Meneely

An Evening with Martin Carthy

Saturday, May 1 8 pm UK (3 pm US east coast; noon US west coast)
Streamed live from Falcon Audio Visual Arts Studio
Whitby, UK

A give-what-you-can donation (£8-$10 per person suggested; more always welcome) goes directly to the artist. To avoid scammers, we’re asking people to register for the show in order to get the link (contact janiemeneely@gmail.com).

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

To call Martin Carthy a master musician doesn’t do him justice. To put it simply, he personifies the British folk revival of the 1960s-70s and continues to dominate a genre rife with old ballads and bursting with contemporary songs reflective of these ever-so changing times. His musical repertoire aside, Carthy’s unique guitar style remains the envy of guitar players the world over.

Martin Carthy’s music underpins so many of the folk classics we have come to know and love in the last 50 years. He has influenced writers and performers from Bob Dylan to Richard Thompson as well as the most recent generation of folkies (we just haven’t heard of them yet). Whether as a solo artist, a member of the fabled Watersons family band (he married Norma Waterson in 1972), or part of the trailblazing Steeleye Span, Carthy has left his mark on plenty of stages and consistently wowed audiences with his spot-on interpretation of traditional song.

Please join us for what will be a very special and intimate evening. The blessing of a YouTube concert, of course, is that the show will be available on screen for 48 hours after the initial viewing. Tune in when you can. Tune in again.

GETTING TO THE CONCERT:

Before the concert is slated to begin, paste the link into your computer browser (the channel goes “live” 15 minutes before showtime). Anyone can watch a YouTube livestream, but if you want to make comments or join in the chat (visible on the side of the screen) you will need a YouTube or Google login (people with gmail accounts are automatically logged in to Google).

As per usual with concerts of this kind, the proverbial tip jar makes it easy for those who wish to make a contribution to the artist. It will scroll along the bottom of the computer screen: paypal.me/tulip0852 (you don’t have to have a PayPal account for this; just click on the link and follow the instructions, which include how to pay with a credit card).

Contact janiemeneely@gmail.com if you would like an email reminder on the day of the concert.

You're right of course Hagman, and the theory of providing a source of income to an excellent musician & decent bloke is fine by me. But yer man has done very well out of folk music, and I'd be surprised if he needs the money!

In Ireland it's known as the 'poor mouth' and although I'm sure yer man would make no such a claim, I would prefer to find a more needy cause to support- OK?

"Hangman"? I've been called worse.... :-)

Back to the point, Guest, would you argue that one shouldn't buy a CD or go to a concert of (say) Bob Dylan or Elton John because he doesn't need the money?

(There was of course the recent famous example of Leonard Cohen going back on the road at a very late stage in life because, yes, he DID need the money.)

I'm sure we all support as many needy causes as our means allow. But your man Flann O'Brien would also appreciate the irony of cutting of one's nose to spite one's face.

(Plus you - and all others who so choose - are in the fortunate position of being able to enjoy the above-mentioned concert for no donation at all - a win-win, I would say.   :-))

First of all, you're missing the point- it's just that there seems to be an element of the 'poor mouth' in all this it's busking, really via PAYPAL
It's good that such online access to music is available, but even if I am fortunate in its availability it isn't my concept of music.
Good luck to you supporting billionaire superstars- again, not for me.
By the same principle the obscenity which passes for professional football is not my idea of the 'beautiful game' so Again NO THANKS.

Can I get a word in edgewise, fellows?

Poor mouth, schmoor mouth.

Who, and WHERE, are the co-sponsors of this virtual event?
Sure, the artist is in the UK;
however the list of sponsors is a list of
organizations in the USA.

Martin Carthy spent many a year literally going round the continental lower 48 states, bringing his performances in person to us in the United States.
It is unlikely that he will pass this way again, in person.
Even if he does come again,
I doubt it will be for one of those lengthy tours
such as he used to do
when he was half his present age.

So, we North Americans have our own reasons for doing this,
and I venture to say,
money is not the most important consideration here.
Some of us heard Mr. Carthy in person here in the States years ago
and we miss him.
We want him back any way we can get him.
All right? Thanks for listening.

Let me chime in here--sorry not to have posted sooner.
I find it alarming that an assumption is being made by someone that Martin Carthy is flush with cash given his prominence in the music scene. Seeing that I'm nearly his neighbor, I can assure you that Martin is one of the "purehearts" that chose to do music for music's sake and not for the money. He made enough in the early days to purchase a comfortable home (unpretentious home, I might add, a modest duplex), but in the last year with NO money coming in and a multi-generational family to support, times have been tough. It galls me to think that on these pages readers would second guess what is an honest and heartfelt attempt to support one of our leading artists.

In truth he'll be turning 80 this year, which means he won't be returning to the States given the prohibitive cost of British travel insurance--not to mention the visa for performers. It's hard for traditional folk musicians—even the likes of Martin Carthy— to make money in the UK these days, and given that a visa is no required for travel to the EU (thank you, Brrexit) yet another source of revenue is being turned off.

Please spread the word about this concert, and support it as you see fit, but please don't assume that because someone is "famous" he (or she) is necessarily rich.

"The Fall of Paris" : during the livestream performance,
Martin Carthy explained that he was playing the tune for
the French Revolution song, whose chorus begins with:

Ah! Ça ira, ça ira, ça ira!

Is this somewhere in Mudcat? My searches are not going well.

I used an e-mail account in order to pay online for my ticket,
and one consequence was that
a series of posts came to me, they were all from the same source,
abbreviated as follows:

which obviously is short for Martin Carthy Livestream[ed]
but you see the result.

Keberoxu - so far I've found this

Ah! Ça ira, ça ira, ça ira!
Le Peuple en ce jour sans cesse répète:
Ah! Ça ira, ça ira, ça ira!
    Malgre les mutins, tout réussira.

After the Paris mob burst forth in its fury, carried the Tuileries by assault and massacred the nobles in prison, these words appeared:

Ah! Ça ira, ça ira, ça ira!
    Les Aristocrat' à la lanterne;
Ah! Ça ira, ça ira, ça ira!
    Les Aristoncrat' on les pendra.

source:
https://tunearch.org/wiki/Annotation:Downfall_of_Paris_%28The%29

I've known that tune a long time, over a quarter of a century I'd say. But I never knew there were any words to it. As a tune, the Downfall of Paris has four parts.

Keberoxu - see https://mudcat.org/Detail.CFM?messages__Message_ID=999556

Now I will have to listen to Missippi Sawyer, the tune reputedly similar to Downfall of Paris.
I also have to listen to Edith Piaf singing Ca Ira
'les aristocrates a la lanterne' on youtube

there is plenty about Ca Ira on Wikipedia, which I have shared to a new thread. Some versions of the song, both French and English language, are provocative and gory.

And tes tgere was a previous Mudcat discussion. https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=38012 asks for songs to the tune The Downfall of Paris.

I would not think of the tune as I know it when I listen to the Edith Piaf recording. Or this recording (also with a set of lyrics in the notes)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-srLjMRjoVI

instrumental by the Yorkshire regiment

There is just a bit of similarity at the beginning of the tune. To me, I am not speaking of the same air when I say Ca Ira as when I say or play The Downfall of Paris.

Downfall of Paris, Irish dance tune https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuljlIwx638 played by the Davey Triplets (lol)

for those of you who didn't receive this e-mail:

On Martin Carthy’s behalf, I would like to thank you all for your generous donations with were greatly received by Martin, Norma and the Family. I know that Martin was thrilled to know there were so many people watching him play. Although Martin had myself as the audience, he certainly didn’t feel alone. You were all with him in spirit.

The YouTube Video of Martin’s concert is still up on YouTube but will be taken down at some point and will be posted on the Falcon Audio Visual Arts website permanently
https://www.falconaudiovisualarts.co.uk/page-11/page-10/
So you will be able to enjoy the concert again at you leisure.

Again a great big thank you goes out to all of you.
