Subject: Welcome New Members--February 22, 2000 From: wysiwyg Date: 22 Feb 00 - 04:12 PM You all welcomed my husband Hardiman the Fiddler so handsomely that I thought I'd toss up a thread to welcome other newbies of the moment. So if you have not yet introduced yourself, anyone, this is a good place to do it! We'll run the thread till it's too long, then snip it and tie it off. For our first new New Member, I'll welcome one that recently joined. Didja notice OSMIUM has just osmosed into the gang? We have correspnded in the Help dept. and here's a brief sketch: "Thanks Praise - My interest in folk is recent; I now play Irish dance music finger picking style on guitar (four years after trying the first tune!) and sing mainly trad Irish but also write a bit myself." Who's next? Let's welcome them all.

Subject: RE: Welcome New Members--February 22, 2000 From: Scotsbard Date: 23 Feb 00 - 02:58 PM I've been lurking sporadically for a few months and only commenting occasionally, but have found the lyrics database invaluable during the last couple of years. I play journeyman level folk/classical guitar, and sing anything from madrigals to motown (even choruses in public with local theatre and opera). Perhaps eclectic would be the kindest term for my musical career, so I'll spare you additional details. My favorite dead poets are Burns, Hein, and Gilbert in no particular order, and (un?)fortunately I can't seem to write anything but parody these days. A celtic/folk/vocal quartet we started about two years ago is the musical project of which I'm proudest, and maybe we'll eventually make a splash here along the gulf coast. Hello to all of you Mudcatters, and I must say that I've found this forum both entertaining and educational. ~S~

Subject: RE: Welcome New Members--February 22, 2000 From: wysiwyg Date: 23 Feb 00 - 09:59 PM NAW, Troll I may betimes need motherin' myself you see. I have far too many responsibilities as it is!! (Quoting my stepdaughter who just wafted by the door...). Perhaps I may from time to time be persuaded by circumstances to wear the black drover's coat, strap on the .357, and make peace. Ah, the scent of a woman has nothing on Hoppe's... As the woman said to the dentist (cradling his testicles gently but firmly in her fist as he bent to begin work on her teeth), "Now we're not going to hurt each other, doctor, are we? Oh Sh*t!! That IS being a mother! Besides, I am also not ready for the kind of meaningful relationship with Max that would be necessary to be the mommie. And if I agreed I know someone would expect me to play house. Naw, I'll keep it as it is. If I change my mind you can call me Wendee. |

Subject: RE: Welcome New Members--February 22, 2000 From: Osmium Date: 24 Feb 00 - 04:23 PM Well it was only a manifestation of a promise; promise. Does a promise need to be asked for before its a meaningful promise? |
Subject: RE: Welcome New Members--February 22, 2000 From: Sabra Date: 25 Feb 00 - 12:58 AM Right, since Im always late for everything anyway, I may as well peek my head round the door and say hello at the tail end here...I found this site quite by accident the other day and have to admit to being instantly addicted. I sent the addy to my darlin who is a folkie in Scotland(and has the largest collection of Trad lyrics I'd Ever seen in one place, til i landed here with the amazing DigiTrad) and now he's one of the faithful as well! I think I fall more into the Fan & Admirer category than the musician, although I sing, play guitar & dulcimer and am re-learning mandolin and just learning "whistles". I couldnt write a song to save my life, but am in awe of those who can--perhaps I can be part of the official "Huzzah" squad?? |
Subject: RE: Welcome New Members--February 22, 2000 From: wysiwyg Date: 25 Feb 00 - 01:21 AM SABRA'S PRAISEPOEM Sabra huzzahs us but we huzzah her, Not only for joining, but for saying a word. Which one will tell her a musician she be? Which topic will draw forth her song poetry? Welcome her sweetness, her tickle, her laugh, Welcome her darlin', pour a shot of strong caff. It was Sabra who issued the Panda command! Sabra? You now lead the Big Panda Band! Bring forth your instruments, shake off the dust! Sabra commands that we play, so we must! Be sure to remind her, as she takes the baton, We'll expect her to play, for us, before long! WELCOME!

Subject: RE: Welcome New Members--February 22, 2000 From: Sabra Date: 25 Feb 00 - 01:22 AM (Uh OH...and now I'm gonna attract the wrath of Garg right off wi two postings in a row) Chocolate Pi~~ I was interested to see you mention Shapednote singing- I attended a "sing" in the Smokey Mtns two summers ago and was mesmerised! The event was put on by the parks service for the tourists, but the folks who came to sing had members that had been at this for over 30 years. I joined in a bit as they invited us to do,(even bought the song book to bring home) but since I have no group to sing with locally thats about as far as I got. Welcome from a fellow newbie and cool about the shapenote group!! |
Subject: RE: Welcome New Members--February 22, 2000 From: Sabra Date: 25 Feb 00 - 01:30 AM wow.. thanks Praise! Hey, being vicarious mum isnt half as difficult as the real thing. Surrounded in glories and having a way Of contributing images and thoughts 'long the way. Osmium's asked, "Can a promise be true If a promise has not been requested of you?" The answer (I trust) will emerge in the end, And if not, we will holler and whoop 'round the bend. Stand with us, as equals, Osmium, do, The mountaintop has room for all, 'specially you. Be bold, strong, and faithful, and show us your heart; You know, here at Mudcat, the heart's the best part!

Subject: RE: Welcome New Members--February 22, 2000 From: wysiwyg Date: 25 Feb 00 - 12:38 PM BTW Allayouse-- These praisepoems just come when they will, and in whatever length seems "enough" at that moment. I've never had them before and I'm not sure who I caught them from! If you haven't been inflicted with one, please don't take offense. It could happen at any time or never happen again. |
Subject: RE: Welcome New Members--February 22, 2000 From: wysiwyg Date: 25 Feb 00 - 12:43 PM Sorry, hit SUBMIT too fast. Also BTW-- in perpetuity-- The odd voices these sometimes come in are not meant to mimic, mock, or otherwise give offense ethnically/etc. I grew up in a polyglot place and the people living in my head speak various languages or have various accents when they pop out. I don't wanna harp on the PC angle (DON'T START POSTING HERE ABOUT IT!!) but I would like it known that diversity has had this effect and that's where it comes from. You oughtta hear the lil ole Jewish man (God) who I hear in some of the Old Testament writings! AIAC |

Subject: RE: Welcome New Members--February 22, 2000 From: Irish sergeant Date: 25 Feb 00 - 06:18 PM Thanks every body for the welcomes. Praise, only play mom cat if it suits the days temperment. from the folkiies I've known in my life I learned, most of the timie ya can't teach em much about anything other than music. (Which is cool enough). Chocolate PI, If you're the "baby" of the group that makes me an old f**t. I was riding carriers before you were born. But it's a good thing that there are people much younger that I who are interested in traditional music. By the way i'm looking for skipping rope rhymes from Lodon's Whitechapel district circa 1880-1888 (Research for a story about Jack the Ripper) Any clues? Again, thank you all, and I look forward to a long fruitful musical association, Irish Sgt.(Aka Neil) |
Subject: RE: Welcome New Members--February 22, 2000 From: Susan A-R Date: 27 Feb 00 - 12:11 AM Welcome all. Say Scott, have you checked this out yet? (lurking musical buddy of mine??) Sabra and Chocolate Pi, if you are interested in sacred harp, you may want to check out Village Harmony camp here in Vermont. They have been doing singing camps for years for teen agers, and now they offer them for us jealous adults. They do have a website, but darned if I know what it is called. entering Village Harmony in a search engine should get you there though. First session is full, but there's a rumor that there's still room in the later session. Susan A-R |

I'm not a musician (play basic guitar), not a college student (those days are behind me now), not much of a singer (my thanks to those @ "Sounds Like Sunday" at the Dandelion Cafe in Halifax for making me feel comfortable enough to sing), but am a total devotee of lyrics, puns, melodies, prose, harmonies, guitar licks, the sweet sound of the mandolin, and the twang of the banjo. I love the fiddle, and the pipes make me cry......this is the perfect place for me to be.....thanks to all the "seasoned vetrans" at the 'Cat for the laughs and the provocative thoughts! Pixie |
