Subject: Who's been here the longest? From: GUEST,Marty Dawson Date: 08 Sep 00 - 01:14 AM I've been looking in for a while and I started wondering how long people have been coming to this site. Other than the originators has anyone been here since day one? This place is unique on the net. M |
Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: GUEST,marty D Date: 08 Sep 00 - 01:17 AM Dammit, excuse my stupidity. I just saw the newcomers FAQ. I'll probably find my answer there. M |
Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: CarolC Date: 08 Sep 00 - 01:42 AM Marty Dawson, welcome to the Mudcat. Best wishes, Carol |
Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: Joe Offer Date: 08 Sep 00 - 01:58 AM Well, Marty, for some reason, the first thread was #4, started by Max October 1, 1996. http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=4 Max and Dick Greenhaus were here from the start, of course. Bert shows up later in October. I'm not sure where Bert fits into the mix - he works with Max, or Max owes him lots of money, or something... The counter says Bert has posted 3,474 messages since 29 Oct 96, but I saw posts from him before that date (don't ask how many I've posted). Susan of DT came a little late - but still in 1996. It's not until Thread 32 that I start seeing names that are really familiar. There's Peter, and I suspect he's Peter T. There's our sactified curmudgeon Bill D, there's Bill Foster, and of course there's Bert. Martin Ryan, too. Looking a little farther, I see Ralph Butts, LaMarca, and Bob Schwarer. Susan A-R was way early, too. Hmmm. Another poster was from Los Alamos National Laboratory - I've posted a few Mudcat messages from their library... You don't have to wait in line to use the Internet from there - but it helps to have a "Q" clearance. The last thread started in October 1996, was #87, Message #215 - and I know at least ten of those threads were blank and probably several messages were. We got a slow start. I think you'll find I got here about 12/96 or 1/97, and Dale Rose and Gene G got here about the same time. It was the Washington, DC folks who got here first, since the Digital Tradition has its roots in the Folklore Society of Greater Washington (among other places). -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: John in Brisbane Date: 08 Sep 00 - 03:59 AM When I arrived in Mar/April 97 Joe was well established but at that time was irascible and sceptical. Actually we've all come a long way since then. Regards John in Brisbane (Just paying Joe back for some cheek he gave me some little time ago). |
Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: Alice Date: 08 Sep 00 - 04:19 AM It was May '97 that I found the Mudcat site, and June '97 that I started posting messages. I remember Barry Finn and LaMarca and Joe, of course, from that time. |
Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 08 Sep 00 - 04:47 AM I don't know when I first started coming here. I know it was some time before I started posting messages. If it is based on messages, I didn't start until late '98, November, I think. I had used the Digital Tradition database for some time while it had been in residence at Xerox. It must have been at least 6 months after it left Xerox before I came here searching out songs. It's hard to believe the Forum is such an integral part of the life of all of us, after such a relatively short time. |
Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: GUEST,Martin Ryan Date: 08 Sep 00 - 06:07 AM Joe looking back at that thread - we never did turn up "When Paddy Stole the rope" - did we? Regards

Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: Wolfgang Date: 08 Sep 00 - 06:16 AM When I came in June 97, there were already here: Martin Ryan, Alan of Australia, Peter T., Alison, Dale Rose, Frank in the swamps, Susan from California, Bob Landry, Bill D, Jon W, and many others mentioned above. True, some of them now post less in half a year than, e.g., Mbo in a week, but I am still glad if I see their names from time to time. Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: Little Neophyte Date: 08 Sep 00 - 06:35 AM I came here around Sept/99. Rick Fielding suggested I check out this site, so I did. katlaughing became my mama teaching me many things before there was a FAQ Newcomers Guide. So did Joe Offer and Jon Freeman. Catspaw would always make me laugh and still does. Gargoyle would always yell at me. Fell in love with Charles BSeed cause he is my Uncle Charles Never got flamed much, too busy apologizing for my existence to get much of that. Haven't been around much lately, only because life pulled me in a few other directions. I am thrilled to have found this site. It means a great deal to me. Banjo Bunny |

Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: bob schwarer Date: 08 Sep 00 - 08:44 AM Ifound the DT way back when it was connected with Xerox. They backed out because of copyright concerns and DT was dormant for awhile. Finally the present setup arrived. Don't remember dates. Went under the handle "Phideaux" for a bit. Bob S. |

Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: harpgirl Date: 08 Sep 00 - 11:16 AM ...yes that was a memorable post. I treated it lightly as I recall. Gargoyle never hassled me after that. But I have hassled him privately alot since then...and I took it from a bunch of folks for not getting mad at him...although I did privately ...harpgirl |
Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: Rick Fielding Date: 08 Sep 00 - 11:20 AM Jeez, at two and a half years I'm practically a virgin. I do remember that Joe Offer was high up the spiritual totem pole and the computer "Mr. Fixit". I was pretty intimidated when I found out he was some kind of "actual" Minister. The revelation that he was a private dick as well, completed the "untouchable" portrait...........and then, I met CATSPAW!...and found out that Joe was "touchable" after all! now I touch him all the time! Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: sophocleese Date: 08 Sep 00 - 11:22 AM I started reading last summer and posting at the end of last summer so I guess I've been here a year now. Sometimes it feels like longer and at other times it feels like less. |
Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: Dave (the ancient mariner) Date: 08 Sep 00 - 11:24 AM I was searching for some lyrics to Sea Shanties during some quiet time at work. Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: Peter T. Date: 08 Sep 00 - 11:55 AM I was here real early, and knew I was addicted when I stumbled into a smalltown cafe in darkest Borneo and found out that the owner was fooling around with the Internet and persuaded him to let me send a message to Mudcat! If the finding of one good friend is worth more than rubies, then Mudcat has already been to me Aladdin's cave and the island of Edmund Dantes, Count of Monte Cristo, and the treasure guarded by the White Cobra in the city of the King of Twenty Kings, known to all the jungle as the Cold Lairs. yours, Peter T. |

Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: Lox Date: 08 Sep 00 - 12:18 PM You're thinking of Zaphod Beeblebrox. Or was the wayward wailing heron his stage name...... hold on, are Zaphod Beeblebrox and Gil Scott Heron the same man? Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: Bert Date: 08 Sep 00 - 02:35 PM Like George I had used DT in the Xerox days. I didn't find Mudcat until 21 Oct '96. And I still haven't got the words to the song I requested. Perhaps that's because I made the beginners mistake of not starting a thread for it. And Harpgirl, you already know my thoughts on the 'size' issue. Bert. |

Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: Banjer Date: 09 Sep 00 - 12:35 AM How long have I been here....? Huh, what century is this? I can recall that when I first arrived at Mudcatville there was only one dirt road, called Main Street, both city limit signs, Welcome to Mudcatville and You Are Now Leaving Mudcatville, were on the same pole. If a bus came through the folks in front were out of town before the ones in the back ever arrived! That was back in nineteen-hundred-something...I've watched this little burg grow into a respecable sized metropolis, heck there must be some hundred and fifty folks living here now. Given enough time I could probably name all of them, but with my old memory I know you haven't got that much time! This place is the kind twilight zone that once you arrive you never really ever leave. Oh, you may go on to other places but part of you always stays here in the company of good spirits, all interested in the same types of music and nonsense that originally drew you here. A real nice community it is...Well I gotta go off for a while, promised Cletus and the boys I'd meet 'em down at the ole fishin' hole long about sunup. Reckon I'll fetch along my banjo, just in case the fish ain't biting. Ya'll have a fine now and lets see, what was the question.....? |
Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: raredance Date: 09 Sep 00 - 01:08 AM I haven't been here the longest, of course, but I have been lurking for a while. The earliest post of mine I could find was January of 1997. I thought I might have had one in late 96, but maybe I was just reading stuff. That first post was a rather late response to thread 33. That is sort of a trend that has continued, i.e. posting after the thread has peaked and most folk have moved on (I have to get back to that Anacreon thread one of these days). Mostly I post facts related to songs (lyrics, recordings, background etc.), so for the "feeling flamed" out there, most anything else I post should not be taken very seriously. I once started a thread asking a question, but didn't get much of an answer, so I learned my lesson there. Joe ordered me to put in line breaks, but I am still waiting to be able to do a clicky to make a clicky. After all links are for breakfast and Tigers and formerly sleeves. rich r |

Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: Peter T. Date: 09 Sep 00 - 10:16 AM I'm with the big guy. When he goes, I go. Hey, marty, good instinct. I was a standup comic for a short time. I was a good comedy writer, but couldn't handle the audiences and the owners. yours, Peter T. |
Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: campfire Date: 09 Sep 00 - 10:48 AM First stumbled in (by accident) in April 1997. I actually knew some lyrics somebody was looking for and posted the bit I remembered. I didn't have my own computer then, so could only come back through the Library connection about once a week. I may not have a lot to say, but I stop by, usually twice a day. campfire |
Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: Rick Fielding Date: 09 Sep 00 - 10:51 AM Peter! you've been holding out on us! 'Course I know yer a world traveller, respected author, daring environmentalist, free lance philosopher, artist, actor, director, softball player, and courageous enough to tackle songs with Joan Sutherland's range, but Henny Youngman?! Who was that Ladle I saw you with last night? That was no ladle, that was my knife! Rick (frustrated sit-down comic) |

Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: Little Neophyte Date: 09 Sep 00 - 01:48 PM Catspaw you know Rick can be pretty funny. Why I remember when I had my first lesson with him, he made me laugh the entire time with that southern bluegrass accent he does. And his Polish Jewish old man one just cracks me up. BB |
Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: catspaw49 Date: 09 Sep 00 - 02:10 PM Yeah I gotta' say that Rick has the impressionist thing really down!!! The jokes are still pretty lame, but the lad certainly has a future in the dialect game if he chooses to go that way. If so, I want to wish you the best in your new profession!!! Just don't give up that day job of pickin' and singin'.....'cause I think you're still tops there. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: momnopp Date: 09 Sep 00 - 03:04 PM I haven't been here long; less than a year if I recall correctly -- because I wasn't a computer geek until a couple of years ago. I noticed, however, that an awful lot of folks brought laptops to the Getaway the past couple years, and last year after meeting so many 'catters, I was convinced I'd have to spend more time checking out the threads. Someone always seems to beat me to whatever I have to say on the music threads I know something about, so most of my posts are to the "BS" threads. I love this place and will hang out here for many, many moons to come. JudyO |
Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: Mark Clark Date: 09 Sep 00 - 07:34 PM I can't remember when I first started reading at the Cafe. I know I was downloading lyrics from the DT in 1997. The earlist post of mine cataloged here is dated April 10, 1998 though I've been lurking for much longer. I first learned of the DT when it was only a diskette being passed around. It seems to me I first located the DT on the Internet before there was a WWW. We used archie and ftp; it seems to me the DT was hosted on a Xerox Corp. server. My searches were rather intermittent until The Mudcat Cafe took over as DT host. - Mark |
Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: Rick Fielding Date: 09 Sep 00 - 09:06 PM Oi vay y'all. Hey Leej, who you callin' an "arsenal"? Ain't that the guy G. Dubya hates? Apologies Marty D, but sometimes the best of thread intentions go awry! Rick |

Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: Bill D Date: 09 Sep 00 - 09:54 PM ya know...it's sometime fun to just change the thread # up top to an earlier one and browse...like this is 25175....if you backspace over it and enter 4317 you get a thread from March 98 about the tune "Banna Strand"...neat stuff! (wondering how harpgirl managed to get the theme from ' been here longest' to 'longest here'...*grin*...)wait..."longer" could mean temporal...hmmm...then it IS better! Bill D..not a misogynist, just a general misanthropist |

Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: Susan from California Date: 10 Sep 00 - 12:15 PM I have had two incarnations here at Mudcat, first as Susan of California and then after I couldn't figure out how to reset my cookie, I became Susan from California. The first time I posted was before I registered, I requested lyrics to the song "California Dreaming" and waded into a "what is or isn't folk" discussion. That was in the spring of 1997. I take time away sometimes, but the community here always draws me back. One of these days I'm going to learn how to do a blue clicky, and how to italicize, etc. Now that school is back in session, that will probably have to wait until next (a word I would like to have put in italics) summer! |
Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: Peter T. Date: 10 Sep 00 - 12:35 PM The first person I really connected with here was the illustrious Gene Graham. I asked about "Ghost Riders in the Sky" and he posted this huge screed about the guy who wrote it, and I was totally amazed at his generosity to a complete stranger. And then the wonderfulness of it all hit me: you could actually pool folk generosity in one place, and the Internet allowed you to do that because of its mixture of anonymity and intimacy, and Max's brilliant design! Still a wonder. And we are coming up on the next Mudcat birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! yours, Peter T. |

If you are a good little lad, I will try and keep the others from whipping yer arse for beating on that poor auld goatskin. I am anxious to see you, and will have a cooler full of Guinness, given the fact that we can bring alchohol this year. Mick |
Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: GUEST Date: 10 Sep 00 - 07:54 PM Good thread and interesting to see how relationships have emerged from this site. I do wonder why some insist on injecting their own pruriency into every conversation. My guess is that they are using it as a smokescreen to hide their own inadequacies, which would also explain their prolific use of the "misogyny." |
Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: Big Mick Date: 10 Sep 00 - 08:04 PM Well, thank yew, Doctor. Thank goodness we have you to point out the finer points of our fellow villagers problems. Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: GUEST,Barry Finn Date: 10 Sep 00 - 11:25 PM My inadequacies as a guest (see above) prohibits me direct communication with other members so I have to take & give it where I can. Now it's about time that there's a doctor in the house. My daughter laughed at me the last time I paid one who said I had a couple of screws loose just before they relieved me of some of the scrap metal I haul around in my legs, but I'm as sick as I ever was & still I've never felt better. So Micky my boy I don't care if your singing is lovely as your snoring as long as you're showing up & as for the arse whipping I've been beaten but never by someone who wanted to try it twice except by a goat who got me drunk on Woolite & started using me as a tipper. See ya soon, Barry |
Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: Barbara Date: 11 Sep 00 - 03:16 PM I got here in late 97, tho not to post until 98 Spring, and for years before I had internet access, I would get friends to download the latest DT for me. I'd have to look but I think I've got one from 94 or 95. When did DT first become available to download? And Jeri, about that parody, I'm WAITING... Blessings, Barbara |
Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: Big Mick Date: 11 Sep 00 - 09:48 PM OK, I see it now. It has been brought to my attention that my post seems to imply that Harpgirl made the GUEST post. That is not the case. I was making a sarcastic comment to the guest with regard to the attempt to interpret motives. Not only do I believe that it wasn't Harpgirl, I believe the remark was a shot at Harpgirl and Kendall. And I believe that the remark was unwarranted. That is why I made the sarcastic comment. Thanks......rant over. Mick |
Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: belter Date: 12 Sep 00 - 12:43 AM I'm not sure when I first found the dt. I was trying to read it in 95, but it grew faster than I can read. I don't think I notist imediatly when the discusion forum started. I may have been distracted by school. When I started reading the forum, I was amazed by the broad range of knowledge that was being shared, and suprised that I could sometimes contribute a useful tidbit that no one had beaten me to. I guess I began posting soon after I got on the forum, off and on. And today I became a member. |

Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: Metchosin Date: 12 Sep 00 - 01:35 AM Like most I came to the DT first, researching something for my brother in July 99 and later to possibly find some history on songs my grandfather used to play and sing .
Proved worthwhile too, though not in the way I thought it would. One of my grandfathers's songs has only been collected from one other source in North America and my grandfather's version be appearing on an upcoming CD of Hobo Songs soon....damn, wish I could remember the name of the artist...oh well, when its out I will probably be so excited I will certainly let everyone know.
The other upshot was that one of my grandmother's songs proved unique too and Murray on Saltspring is including it in a book of Bairn Songs he is compiling.
I entered the Forum in September or October 99 after a lot of lurking and with considerable trepidation, intimidated by the expertise and my decided lack of computer skills. And lo and behold Gargoyle was the first to greet me. He told me to go away! everyone here was a jerk.....scared the s**t out of me. Sure glad I stayed. Thanks for all the help and time people, if I've never told anyone before, I'm stating it now: YOU ARE THE BEST AND IT SURE HAS BEEN APPRECIATED! New members and old, whoever you are.

Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: Rick Fielding Date: 12 Sep 00 - 10:45 AM Guest Marty, hopefully you've seen how a fairly general-interest thread question, whether by a newcomer or a veteran, meanders for several days. Lotsa tangents, but if you can wade through it all you DO get your info. That's why I still like Mudcat. It took a while after my initial queries, but threough the "cat" I got information on an incredibly obscure jazz guitarist (Snoozer Quinn), an even more obscure Django question (English lyrics to "Nuages") and recently, "Ramblin Sid Rumpo" on CD (Kenneth Williams thread). Amazing. Only time I got stumped was in a question on Panamanian folk songs....and that wasn't life or death! Rick |
Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: catspaw49 Date: 12 Sep 00 - 10:58 AM And of course even though Rick coined the phrase "Blue Clicky Thing," after two years, he still can't do one! Spaw |
Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: Rick Fielding Date: 12 Sep 00 - 11:04 AM I could for a few months Spaw, 'cause I wrote all the pertinent info down in felt pen ON THE COMPUTER! (Peter T can attest to this) and then Duckboots cleaned the whole damn room and ERASED it! Rick(too lazy to live) |
Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: GUEST,marty D Date: 12 Sep 00 - 11:06 PM Man, I'm speechless! I guess most of you have been hanging out here so long you don't notice how bizarre this seems to a relative newcomer. I don't just mean THIS topic - but it will do. Psychiatric evaluations? Mysogyny? And I was worried about aking a question? I'm somewhat familiar with the music of both Kendall and Rick, but to hear one of them talking about his "endowment" and the other making bad Henny Youngman jokes in his spare time is just too weird. To find Hedy West enjoying herself as one of the crowd seems almost too good to be true. Catspaw, are you a professional musician? I'm not even sure why I'm asking, but I'm getting less inhibited about this place every day. M

Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: Rick Fielding Date: 13 Sep 00 - 10:20 AM We KNOW how bizarre it is! I make GOOD Henny Youngman jokes. Kendall's endowment is something I'd rather not think about! Catspaw is not a professional musician, he's a computer-generated experiment. Hedy West has not been corrupted yet, but give her a chance. Subject: RE: Who's been here the longest? From: catspaw49 Date: 13 Sep 00 - 10:43 AM On the other hand Marty, when the bizarre becomes commonplace, we have treatment available at the Neil Young Center for the Terminally Screwed. A few sessions learning the Oscar Mayer Wiener song as part of a crazed tiple band will make you right as rain, and we all know how bad rain has become. Welcome to the 'cat....I'm just another kitchen picker, but we do have quite a few pros here. Rick, Art Thieme, Seamus Kennedy, Sandy Paton, Kendall Morse, Frank Hamilton, Hedy West, Margaret MacArthur, etc........lots of names in the folk world. Some are very regular posters. Kendall Morse for instance has been on a lot looking for a way to raise the dead, in this case, he means his willie. Join in whenever and wherever. There are an awful lot of bright, talented, intelligent, and erudite, helpful, and friendly people around here..........sorrowfully, I'm not one of them, but trust me, they're here. Spaw |
