Subject: Carter Family Lyric Sites From: Stewie Date: 08 Dec 00 - 09:46 PM There are often requests to the forum for lyrics of Carter Family songs. Those interested in the Carter Family, and who cannot afford the Bear Family boxed set, may like to bookmark these two sites for future reference. You may not agree with all the transcriptions, and will find discrepancies, but these generous souls have done the hard yards for us. The web can be a wonderfully generous place: Have a great yuletide, Stewie.

Subject: RE: Carter Family Lyric Sites From: Giac Date: 10 Dec 00 - 09:45 AM Good stuff, although you're right about incorrect lyrics in some places, like "Bethel Nation Stand" and "little salvation band" instead of "Bethel Mission Band," but it is indeed a heroic effort and a few listens to Carter recordings could clear up the misheard lyrics.

Subject: RE: Carter Family Lyric Sites From: Bill D Date: 10 Dec 00 - 01:43 PM LOL..wonder what A.P. and Sarah would have done with "They have killed the Earl of Murray and laid him on the green".........The internet has the potential to accelerate musical entropy...or to freeze it in one mode forever! |
Subject: RE: Carter Family Lyric Sites From: Murray MacLeod Date: 10 Dec 00 - 07:39 PM Bill, I have to point out that they killed the Earl of Moray, not Murray. Murray |
Subject: RE: Carter Family Lyric Sites From: Stewie Date: 10 Dec 00 - 08:02 PM My pleasure. The one that I labelled #2 has been mentioned a few times in the forum - and now Mudcat linked by Joe - but these things are sometimes missed by those who would be most interested. I got a beaut CD in the mail yesterday: Jody Stecher and Kate Brislin 'Songs of the Carter Family' Appleseed CD 1043. It has Larry Hanks adding bass vocals to several tracks and Suzy Thompson added on one track. There are 12 songs, including many less covered ones such as 'Bear Creek Blues', 'Away Out on the Old Saint Sabbath' and others. This is the loveliest tribute to the Carter Family since the truly wonderful 'Meeting In the Air' LP on Flying Fish by members of the Red Clay Ramblers - sadly, that gem has never made it to CD. Appleseed have also released a second volume from Warner Collection - 'Nothing Seems Better to Me: The Music of Frank Proffitt and North Carolina' Appleseed CD 1036. Indispensible. --Stewie. |
