Subject: Cheer me up - Please
From: JulieF
Date: 07 Feb 01 - 12:13 PM

I'm sorry to burden people and I know that my woes are very minor in the rich tapestry of life but I am so pissed off today that I need cheered up. I've been out sorting software across the city which worked perfectly when I was there and miraculously had failed by the time I got back to my desk. Then finally this afternoon I had to put a very old bit of software on the machine of the woman whoes work is always the most important (in her opinion) and not only didn't I get the software on I wiped out all her network software as well. This comes after a week when I had to go to my uncle's funeral who left a nine year old daughter and her three half sisters.

As I said , I know this is really small fry in the plain of suffering and I really am just looking for cheerful words - I'm sure you can manage that.

All the best

Julie

To err is human,....to really foul something up requires a computer! Julie I really can't think of a fitting joke, etc. to cheer you up but I truly wish you the best. Now if you could say a few kind words about this headache that has been plagueing me for the past five days.....

Hi Julie,
certain things in life are meant to test us, especially cock-ups at work.
I wish I could think of something cheerful to say to you, but I've also had a shitty day at work. I'ts now 18:26 here and I have 128Km to drive home. My wife is at a conference in Stockholm and my son is staying with his Grandmother.
It's a long night ahead!

whose software was being unruly
Not thinking of risk
she popped in her disk
and buggered up really and truly

Julie,

Laugh at the work problems they don't really matter. Next time try Start>settings>control panel select the networks icon and highlight all the adaptors then click remove. This always cheers me up when I have had it with a user.

Sorry can't help with your Uncle and more importantly the people he left behind...I suggest you don't hold back and have a good cry for them.

Spot.

Julie, sorry to hear of your troubles, but you've done the right thing in posting here. I was sick a while back and could'nt believe the sympathetic response that came from the 'Cat, as well as some helpful advice and a few 'keep your chin ups'. So, keep your chin up!!

As for the woman whose computer you wiped out, she sounds like trouble anyhow so as long as there are no repercussions from that, enjoy it, heh heh.

All things must pass.

Well done, Micca! Great cartoon, Amergin!

Julie, sorry to hear about your uncle. My sympathy and a big hug coming your way.

The computer thing will work out; maybe this respite will make her realise that she can live without being first on everyone's list and making them miserable about it.

Are you near any windows? If so, take a break and go look out at some Nature; take a deep breath and blow it out slowly, than watch the birds or listen for them, feel the sun or rain or whatever there is near you and know that all the care and love of the Mudcatters are carried to you on those birds' wings, songs, in the warmth of the sun, cool touch of rain etc.

All the best,

kat

Julie, I know messing up somebody else's computer can make for some really downer feelings. But hey -- at least it wasn't YOUR computer!

There once was a techie named Julie
Who met a self-aggrandizing foolie
She pushed the wrong key
And buggered her PC
Which made Julie's foolie all drooly.

Oh well. My brain doesn't kick in until about noon.

Julie, There isn't one of us who hasn't made some error at one time or another, so you are asking the right group for help. You found yourself stressed and under the strain of recent events. I am sorry about your loss and the children's. So here is a big {{{{{HUG}}}}}to let you know we care about you.

Be kind to yourself, listen to some wonderful music; pick up a book with some inspirational thoughts; telephone a close friend, whatever it takes to get cheery.

Julie--you can always re-install software, if worse comes to worse--of course, whose to say that she didn't delete the software herself? and if any files were lost, you can always say "What do you mean, you didn't back your files up? You should always back up your files!"

Of course, you should ask the woman, "What was the last command that you entered?" This question immediately generates fear--chances are, she has no idea what the last command was, and if she does, you can always say."You should have done "X" before you did that, because you were in the "Blank" mode, and that could cause "XXX" to delete and whatever else your immagination can cook up--

My experience with the self-important types is that generally they are the biggest screw-ups of all, and they know it, and they act self important in order to conceal their ineptitude, so when you start throwing this stuff around, they get panicked enough that when you offer to straighten it out without telling anyone else about the problem, they are happy to let you--

Is this a dishonest and manipulative ploy? Some might say so, but you have no way of knowing what goon activities took place between the time the program was running fine and the time you got back to your desk and it was a mess, and chances are, the guilty parties are trying to make it look like it is your fault--

Micca said it best.

Anyway, all you need to get a laugh is to think about this worthless heap of parrot droppings, which we at the forum otherwise think of (ourselves) as 'contributors.'

Also, be assured that your woes are minor, and will certainly provide for neat cocktail party discussion for years to come.

The GOOD thing about this....and YES there is a GOOD part, is that this kind of screw up goes on every day in the computer age. Even if they don't know it consciously folks know that at least once a year they're gonna have huge computer woes. You've just gotten yours over early in the year.

Here's to you from Canada.

What was Bruces motto "If at first you don't louse up Try Try Try again" Iv'e been complaining to my boss about the computer at work for months, funny thing after I overheard him saying they were cutting back on commercial training (Most of my wage comes from the CT budget) I got fed up and tried to fix it myself, result one computer with a complete nervous breakdown one boss needing work done and a phone call (Finally) to the repairman.

As for your Uncle love the family and don't be afraid to cry.

M Ted beat me to it; She-Who-Thinks-She-Must-Be-Obeyed should have had her network software, etc. in reserve somewhere. She sounds like the type who (of course) isn't perfect, it's not that she's always right; it's just that she's never wrong/it's never her fault.
If your cousins live nearby, stop over and give them and their mom a hug. If they are too far away, call, send e-mail, or drop a card. Too many people drop out of sight after the funeral, and kids that age can always use somebody to talk to, no matter what their circumstances (if circumstances take that turn).
Now, as for you, young lady, (((((hug))))). You're not burdening us; you have the wisdom to know that a few words here will keep your suffering from having a chance to expand even more. :)

Just before I checked into Mudcat, and this thread, my hubby sent me this. Timing!

Last night as I lay sleeping I died or so it seemed Then I went to heaven But only in my dreams But then St Peter met me There at the pearly gates He said "I must check your record Please stand here and wait" He turned and said "Your record Is covered with terrible flaws On earth I see you laboured For every losing cause I see you drank alcohol And used smokes and drugs too Fact is you've done everything A good man should never do We can't have men like you up here Your life is full of sin" Then he read the last of my record Grasped my hand and said "Come in"

He took me up to the big boss and said "Take him in and treat him well He used to work for ******* He's done his time in hell"

******* insert any computer-related IT-fixing department or company name here

Hugs and kind thoughts from Oz, too. Helen

Julie, I keep telling colleagues that the most important lesson we can teach the children in ICT is that a) computers go wrong, and b)even if a message tells them its their fault (like the one that says - If you do not wish to see this screen again, close down Windows properly), it isn't telling the truth.

In this case, however, telling Madam that there may have been some incompatability between the software you were installing and some changes which had been made in the computer and you hadn't been made aware of might be a better teaching point. It hadn't happened on any others, had it?

I have a colleague who gets help with her laptop from her son.........

When I remember the funeral of my brother-in-law, I get some sushi from M&S (which he introduced me to), and listen to the music my neices played there. It isn't cheering, but satisfying. And I keep in touch with them (older than your cousins).

What's your comfort food?

Amergin, Helen, priceless posts. Julie, don't belittle or denigrate your pain. It is plenty big enough for your shoulders. Doesn't matter what problems other people have, won't make YOU feel better, and that is the operative phrase. Go for a long walk. Cry for your uncle. Write a long letter to your Aunt, and cousins, with all the wonderful memories you can muster up. Will help you, and them. And post Helens letter in that fatheads computer at work....someone needs to share with her what a fathead she is! Love and prayers your way.

As I understand it, the Hurdy Gurdy was once seen as the instrument of the Devil because it has two soundposts. The French/Italians describe the soundpost as the "soul" (because of it's fundamental effect on the tone of an instrument). Obviously, you can't have two souls.... Hence the Hurdy Gurdy was cast out of use in French Cathedrals etc.

Strange that they felt they needed an excuse...!

Hope things turn up a bit for you Julie, life can be a bit of a lemon sometimes.

Best wishes,

Jon

Certain old men prefer to rise at dawn, taking a cold bath and a long walk with an empty stomach and otherwise mortifying the flesh. They then point with pride to these practices as the cause of their sturdy health and ripe years; the truth being that they are hearty and old, not because of their habits, but in spite of them. The reason we find only robust persons doing this thing is that it has killed all the others who have tried it. -- Ambrose Bierce, The Devil's Dictionary

Hi Julie

Live is only as hard and serious as ya take it. On the other hand ya need these moments of disappointments, anger, shame, dreariness, bad luck and whatever else to know and enjoy the opposite of it. I know what I'm talking about cause I found out that if you take a more relaxed attitude towards life it wont affect ya this hard. Shure it sounds easier then it is in reality but the more ya try the easier it goes. I dont mean to become indifferent, dont get me wrong, it's more like take a step aside and watch it all from there. And as ya see, there's a lot of people who are concerned about ya. Doeen't that feel good?

What can I say - but thank you so much. I would have looked at this last night but its not easy throwing a 15 year old off the computer when she says she's doing her homework.

I loved the limerics and the cartoon as well as all the kind words. I was begining to think I was jinxed. Last week I went to get a rail ticket and all the systems were down, this week I went to Argos and their conveyor belt was broken. - Bloody Hell - I thought I only had to walk into a shop etc and the systems would grind to a hault.

Things are much better today. I have removed the offending machine ( no user hovering behind me) . It has been zaped and the basics put back on - so I can just sit tomorrow moring and build this software back in , bit by bit and I'm on holiday all next week.

I promise to try and be more emotion and less reserved and I an practising spontenaity ( That's not how you spell that is it - but you get the drift)

All the best

Julie

Two quotes, one from my office door and one from right above the screen here: "One of the signs of an approaching nervous breakdown is the belief that one's work is terribly important."--Bertrand Russell. "I have never made but one prayer to God, a very short one:'O Lord, make my enemies ridiculous.'And God granted it."--Voltaire. It's a frantic but loving waltz clog in here. LRM

Julie: My condolences on the loss of your uncle. May God keep and protect you and yours. OK the serious stuff out of the way, Let Old Irish Sergeant give you a crash course on humiliating self-important twits.. Oh wait, my solicitor tells me that advocating ex-lax brownies or setting their desk on fire may violate several statuates and result in punishment and lawsuits. Of course the truest and sweetest revenge is to wait until the center of the universe makes a horrendous mistake and then offer to help them rectify it. Not only do you look great, but it tends to make the self important show their true colors. Many time they implode and have to take a weeks leave or end up quietly disappearing. Kindest reguards, Neil

*ROFL* Sorcha... No little dots? I swear, I could read it once. Give me a while and I'll make sense of them all again.

Julie, all the best. Relax, spend time with your loved ones, this too shall pass. Enjoy your holiday next week.
