Subject: Should live eels be kept in the fridge?
From: wdyat12
Date: 17 May 01 - 01:18 PM

As most of you know I am getting married late this summer right in the heat of Striped Bass season here in Maine. I fish with live eels at night from the surf. When I was single I used to keep live eels fresh for days in the refridgerator. Is it too much to ask of my new bride to continue this practice or should I take up a new hobby? She claims she likes to fish, but we haven't done that yet.

Well, as I answered in the "Eggs" thread...........

You can, of cours, shove them up a friend's ass, but it would probably end the friendship.

I suppose though that in the case of eels, an awful lt would depend on the friend! Hell, they may even like it!!!

If so, good luck baiting your hook...........

Spaw---and wouldn't it be a lot more fun for you and your wife to play with your eel? A good woman beats the hell out of a Striped Bass.......but then again, maybe things are different in Maine...........................

However, I have these Art Frahm drawings and though the guy who wrote the commentary feels the problem is the effects of CELERY on ELASTIC, the real problem is that the eels or eggs have popped out and created the situations. Click Here

Getting back to the original question, a lot depends on how many people are sharing the refrigerator and how attentive they are when they're looking for tasty snacks.

The Barrymans had their lovely song about cleaning the refrigerator and discovering "treasures" that had been stored there.

Then, there was my old co-operative house in Michigan where one couple stored their placenta (tastefully wrapped in waxed white paper) in the freezer downstairs; Karrie and I being the last of the original members, and about to leave the nest, thoughtfully decided to bury "it" in the backyard before the collective consciousness had deteriorated further and "placenta" became the entre of one future brighter day...

Wydat – fish or cut bait!

Click here for "When Did We Have Sauerkraut?" by the Berrymans. Don't you think you should eat the eels as soon as you get them home? Keeping them in the refrigerator would probably spoil the flavor, dontchathink?
When I lived in Berlin in the early 1970's, you could buy live eels at the open-air markets that seemed to be in every neighborhood. The merchant would fish one out for you and rap its head on the counter to stun it. Then he'd wrap it in brown paper so you could tuck the eel under your arm and take it home. Can't say I know what people did with them once they got the eels home, but the process of purchasing was sure interesting to watch.

I'm with Allan on this one. You're marrying a woman you haven't taken fishing and it's a major passion of yours? You don't really know if she will object to your hobby or keeping live bait in your refrigerator? I wonder what she is hiding from you?

I once knew someone who married someone she'd known thirty years and she found out shortly that he had been a nudist and had been hiding it from her and almost everyone else in his family. That marriage lasted four months.

You've got some communicating to do ,pal!

There's an Irish tune, "The Eel in the Sink." Based solely on that reference, my vote is to keep your eels in the sink.

If you put 'em there just before, say, the missus goes in to wash her hands, it will enliven your marriage.

I keep my maggots in the fridge, my wife don't object too much, she got used to it early on in our relationship. Mind you haven't fished for a while. Used to keep my groundbait in the house too.

I don't eat eel, smoked or otherwise, caught quite a few though-slimey things!!!

Tell her if you can keep your eels in the firdge, you'll keep her tampax in your pocket when you both go out and she hasn't got her handbag-pretty good bargain I guess.

Jellied eels? Yuk! Like a bowl of fishy snot.
My grandfather used to love jellied eels though, and used to keep the live ones in an old sink in the scullery. Buggers to kill and skin, they were - he taught me the trick(apologies to the squeamish here) of nailing thing heads to a board and then skinning 'em with hands covered in rock salt to get a good grip.
But smoked eel - that's a dish fit for the gods. The Dutch use little bootlace eels, not much bigger than elvers, and smoke them in hot smoke which gives a fabulous taste. Yummy!
Catching eels can be fun. In Suffolk we used to bab for them - using a bunch of worms knotted up with three-ply hairy wool with a weight attached. You just dangle the ball in a dyke and the eels' teeth snag on the wool as they go for the worms, letting you pull 'em out without hooks or spears. A damp hessian sack with a good drawstring is the best thing for carrying them home in. Ah, happy memories!

According to such old ballads such as "Randall, My Son" some eels is deadly poisonous, especially if they is "green and yellar." So, Wydat, you should at least put some sort of warning sticky on the fridge door, or one of them magnetic ones from work at BIW, or maybe one of them glowing ones from that retired nuke down the road in Wiscasset.

When Dad and I used to go fishing we always kept the maggots in the fridge (albeit in a tin). Before we had a fridge we kept them in the outdoor khazi as the coldest place. Then of course, forgot some when we went on holiday. On return, bursting for a pee, Mom went in, could hear strange buzzing from the mysteriuous tin, opened the lid.........

Gervase, how the !@#$ are you? I nearly wet myself imagining someone eating a "bowl of fishy snot".

I have a few questions about your post, however, to whit: What is it "to bab"?
What is a "three-ply hairy wool"?
What is a hessian sack?

And, last but not least, how does the dyke feel about having a ball dangled in her?

eel, ugh. snakes, ugh. Doug, I would think it would work, same principle. Snakes don't have much natural gelatn, tho, like eels do. Gives me the shivers, eels do. I have eaten rattlesnake, tho. Not much point in it if you ask me....mostly bones with no flavor. Sort of like trying to eat a bony chicken neck.

Aargh, Chance, don't remind me (or my nether parts) of drinking that chilli oil!
Hessian, I suppose, would be burlap on your side of the pond, or a gunny (sp?) sack. And three-ply wool is what you granny used to knit those scratchy and shapeless sweaters from (at least she did if she was anything like my granny. I swear her knitting patterns were designed for orang-utangs, the sleeves were so long. I'd have to roll them up four times, so the cuffs looked liked those trainer-bands for swimming toddlers).
And babbing is what you do with the hairy wool and the worms in the dyke (I think it's a Suffolk word - leastaways I don't hear it used much in the middle of London!).

I've had MG tyres in the sink and snapping turtles in the freezer. Sounds too much like our house. I tend to marry men who are pretty relaxed about that sort of thing. I've got rubber snakes decorating the beams, too, and the largest collection of rubber squid in the state of New Hampshire.

Gawd the "ick" factor round here has rocketed due to this thread.

Can't you just lounge around lakes and pretend you're fishing? Or are you one of those rare anglers ( especially this side of the "pond" ) who actually eat what you catch?

If you come to the east end of London you can enjoy eel pie and mash with liquer. No fridges required!

Mike, the only place I've found the foot-long squigglies, in several vivid colors, is a deep seas tackle shop in Shelborn, Nova Scotia. They're used in trolling. I'll bring one for show and tell to the Portland, ME, Shanty Sing next week-end.

well the way around this i think is to say-i hate to kill them&they would die if left anywhere else which in&of itself is true>it also may bring out her nuturing instinct&the last thing you may want to mention is that orientals consider them delicious-also true now if she does fish woody it wont matter because youll have to try to make sure that she at least leaves you some for after work-cya psyco

Spaw - I had a look at your Art Frahm site. Wow! Very creepy! I had no idea what an effect celery can have on pink underwear! It's strange that all those women would keep buying that particular brand. You'd think word would get around. Why not any white or black underwear, fer chrissake? This Art Frahm guy definitely was odd. He somehow crystalized in that series of pictures the sick plastic undertone of the 50's. Thank god the 60's came along. I note that there is nary a hair to be seen on the legs of these unfortunate ladies. Not one. Truly amazing.

How do you find this stuff?

Amazing ain't it? I dunno' how I run across the stuff.......sometimes I get things from 'Catters of good taste who may love a site but wouldn't post it or use it.........but they know Ol' Spaw will do anything (no real porn though).

Other times, I'm looking for one thing and the search engines pick up on some weirdass site that just cracks me up. Bill D. has a ton of wacky sites too. The entire site that the Art Frahm stuff is on is really a riot. I love the way the guy writes.

Funny too, but I actually remember being a kid back home and going into the upholstery and repair shop in the furniture store where my grandfather worked and seeing thos Art Frahm calendars.......Very daring in the 50's and for a small town ten year old....WOW!!!! Now I look at that stuff and am both amazed at how far we've come and what effect the '60's had while at the same time being saddened by that loss of innocense which is so obvious by comparison............**sigh**............

By the way, the inflatable horse or whatever it is, is truly extraordinary. An art-deco nightmare on the beach. I bet you could get a fortune for one of those if you put it on Ebay.

Coincidentally, I just heard Jonathan Ross on the radio saying that Bestiality is legal in Maine? A guy was refused permission to bring his wife into court - cos, she's a dog (which seems a harsh judgement to make about a lady).

Eels, ugh I remember my Dad (a fishmonger) tryin' to kill the buggars - smoked conger eel is pretty good apparently. But I reckon newly-weds should have more on their minds than this!!

Foot long rubber squid!! Way cool! None of mine are that long (and only 3 glow in the dark), but I just recently had to walk away from buying a 3 or 4 foot long plush stuffed squid at the Monterey Bay Aquarium because it was out of my price range and I didn't want to either ship it home or carry it on the plane. Did find a pair of silver squid earrings, though. And a wonderful squid pen that looks like it's made out of amber and ivory.

But the real question, is why aren't those eels either destined for a pie or for smoking (and eating -- I mean, you can't alter your mind by smoking eels, can you? how would you get them into the little pipe? are they a controlled substance? -- aw, I gotta go back to work!!!)

A guest said Those who keep live eels in the fridge will die as live eels in the fridge. (Sorry - can't help it.)

Like an eel in the fridge
Like a slug in a ditch
I will try in my way to be free
Like the worms in a jar
Or what's under the backseat in my car
I have saved little surprises for thee
If I, if I have been too gross
I hope that I'm not as gross as most
If I, if I am not the way you wish
I hope you know that I just like to fish...

Lady P,
I only eat what I catch. Not that I catch that much, so maybe it's as well I've got a good fishmonger near me! But tonight it's a 3lb trout landed last night on a damsel nymph, poached in court boullion and served with mayonnaise. Wouldn't mind a few eels, though.

Oh good, I've never understood those anglers who catch fish just to let them go again. Seems awful cruel to me.

3lb trout? Cool. Did it taste good? got any good ways of cooling trout? I've got to stop this, I'm making myself hungry!

lady penelope,

All this talk of catching fish is making me hungry for my mercury dose this month. I wish the rivers and oceans were as clean as President Bush proclaims.

Charlie, it was a parody of Leonard Cohen's "Bird on the Wire." I may have to stretch to reach mediocrity, but my song makes more sense than his.

Jeri....

"Ape Picking Lice"

Like an ape picking lice
Like a preacher engaging in vice
I have tried to be nice
But failed miserably

Like a worm underfoot
Like a shotputter does the shotput
I got torn out by the root
Abandoned, but free

If I, if I have been unreal
I hope that you can just let it congeal
If I, if I have been a schmu-uh-uck
I hope you know we were just out of luck

Like an ape picking lice
Like a preacher engaging in vice
I have tried to be nice
But failed miserably

There. Mine makes even more sense than yours. :-)

Cooling trout or cooking trout? I think we're smoking a rainbow and a brookie to make into pate for our music party in Nottingham, NH next weekend. Need the recipe?

Right after I posted that bit of silliness above, I went to the local store to buy some cream for my coffee. They keep the worms in the cooler between the cheese and the milk.

When I was a vet tech, we kept grosser things in the fridge.

I work in a microbiology lab. Want me to tell you what we keep in our fridges?

I did, indeed, mean cooking. I live in a flat, where would I smoke something? I am intrigued. But the recipe for the pate would be nice, thanks B.G.

I just nailed Curmudgeon's feet to the floor long enough to get the recipe for smoked trout pate.

Bake the trout (not grilled; used indirect heat and the cover on) on a grill (like a Webber). Use wood chips for smoking on the coals.

While the fish is cooking, saute shallots in butter with fresh ground black pepper, Old Bay seasoning and a dash of single malt Scotch (Laphroaig is nice).

When the fish has cooled, remove the meat from the bones, mis with the shallot/butter/whiskey misture. Mix thoroughly, breaking up any larger pieces. Put in a container and chill. Serve with bread or crackers.

Is this thread creep? Sorry, if it is.

I am having flashbacks to my childhood - Chinese food cartons full of seaweed and huge bloodsuckers, a mysterious bag from which a smoked eel the size of Moby Dick dropped out the bottom.

Anyone remember the scene from "Anatomy Of A Marriage"? She, pregnant, is served a huge portion of eel stew by her soon to be ex-husband. He insists she not waste "good" food. She and the audience gag down a few of the slimy beasts and everyone runs for the bathrooms. I am getting sick just thinking about it.
No living creatures in my refrigerator! And yes - that includes live yoghurt cultures!

SINS, there's living stuff in my refrigerator that used to be dead. Kind of like a "Pet Sematary" for food...

Know what you mean, Jeri. My mother claimed she was raising those cultures for Dr. Salk. I was ten before I realized the truth. I don't save leftovers for more than two days - the result of childhood trauma. NOTHING lives in my refrigerator!

Many years ago in my bachelor days, I had one fridge that was so disgusting I wouldn't open the door. Stuff had been mouldering in their for years........So when I moved (and neither Pfizer or Eli Lilly would buy the thing for penicillin) I employed the "Handyman's Secret Weapon." Yep......We duct-taped that sucker shut and put it out on the street with the garbage!

You need to put on "Space Oddity" and listen to it several times. It does wonders for lucidity and helps keep your haid on straight.

One summer when I was about 10 I was digging in the fridge for something to eat. I found these round things wrapped in paper. Opened one up---grapefruit, a Xmas gift from 7 mos ago. I asked Mum if they were "spoiled enough to throw away yet....." Became a family watch word!

I personally have had antelope (pronghorn) heads, bobcat hides, and several other things on that order in my freezer. Don't marry a hunter/trapper either, (grin)

Back in the days when the babies were in their teens we had an in home zoo, just about any animal was fair game for our collection, we had possums, squirrels, lizards, turtles, snakes, birds, rabbits, frogs and other assorted amphibians, mice, rats - ANYTHING.

Well occasionally, despite our best efforts, one of these denizens would snuff it. The kids of couse would want to know why, and would store the latest poor unfortunate in the freezer until they could get it to our tame vet for an autopsy.

This was fine until Tree's Mom came for a visit, she was horrified, "You can't keep DEAD ANIMALS in your freezer" she says. Tree calmly replies, "What do you keep in your freezer"

Bert.
