If I get a vote for "Player of the Game" I'll vote for Mills. What an overall great job on defense!!!! He wasn't always perfect, but the man was ALWAYS there! Congrats to all of you.............and Andres, sorry old friend. Spaw |
Subject: RE: IN-GER-LAND! From: An Pluiméir Ceolmhar Date: 07 Jun 02 - 09:43 AM Well done indeed, England. Instead of instinctively supporting Whoever Is Playing Against England, I found myself supporting Les Rosbif for a change. Don't know if it's because of the N.I. peace process, the Ali G interview with that nice young Beckham chap or the fact that hanging out with the rednecks at the bar of the Mudcat Café has turned me against all those goddam hippie Argentinians with their scruffy long hair.

Subject: RE: IN-GER-LAND! From: alanabit Date: 07 Jun 02 - 09:45 AM I still think Argentina will win the competition, but it's a bit special when England beat the likely new world champions. Now Argentina need to beat Sweden, which should help England go through. To my amazement, not only did England win, but they deserved to win. There will be some beer tonight! |

Subject: RE: IN-GER-LAND! From: GUEST,Den at work Date: 07 Jun 02 - 10:35 AM Congrats England fans. A very good performance and Spaw you never cease to amaze me and all it took to convince you was a bunch of little kids. Yes Danny Mills, who I don't really like when he plays for Leeds, had an outstanding game as did Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand. This was an England team playing with conviction a real team effort. It was nice to see young players getting a chance to show their stuff. Nice to see a break from the way England has picked squad members in the past. Anyway I'm sure the pints of bitter will drained as quick as the can be pulled right across the country tonight. Den |

Subject: RE: IN-GER-LAND! From: Les from Hull Date: 07 Jun 02 - 10:43 AM Well done, the lads. Yes, Den it's nice to see the Leeds and Man U players playing so well together, much as it hurts me to praise Man U players. It was a great team performance. We're right to single out Danny Mills for an excellent game, especially as he only came into the team at last minute. And Rio played great, too. (perhaps you can detect the natural bias of the Leeds United fan here!) Now I've got to learn a whole lot of new tunes for tonight's session. |
Subject: RE: IN-GER-LAND! From: Les from Hull Date: 07 Jun 02 - 10:46 AM Don't worry, Fibs - Ireland's got even more Leeds United players in their starting lineup. They'll not let you down! |

Subject: RE: IN-GER-LAND! From: GUEST,Den Date: 07 Jun 02 - 11:30 AM So I suppose most of the Ireland team is actually Irish. Maybe you were thinking of the French. I believe that quite a number of the French players were born else where. I also believe that they like the Englishmen that play for Ireland don't feel any shame in playing for their adopted countries. |
Subject: RE: IN-GER-LAND! From: catspaw49 Date: 07 Jun 02 - 11:35 AM LOL.....Well, you can take encouragement from the three "Irish" guys who scored for the USA.....O'Brien, Donovan, and McBride, although I don't think any of them have ever been to Ireland! Spaw |
Subject: RE: IN-GER-LAND! From: Big Tim Date: 07 Jun 02 - 11:52 AM I started off supporting Argentina (it's not the English people or players I've anything against, it's the media, the smarmy Motson types) but soon switched allegiance when I saw the ruthless, cynical way they played from the kick-off. I'm not religious but I was actually praying that Beckham would stick the penalty away. The team was magnificent, inspirational: congrats. My English son in law, out in Pusan at present, will be over the moon and my Scottish daughter, out there with him, will be over it for his sake. Ireland for the cup tho! |

I imagine if Michael Owen had been Argentine all the English commentators would have been saying he dived to get the penalty. (And they'd have been wrong.)
Best of luck to the Argentine in the game with Sweden, and to England against Nigeria - and then maybe the two teams will meet once more before the contest is over. |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: GUEST,Den at work Date: 07 Jun 02 - 01:31 PM McGrath I seem to remember Shane saying in an interview that he was born in Tipperary and moved to London when he was 12. I could be wrong though. Den |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: AliUK Date: 07 Jun 02 - 02:16 PM Sorry to say but Owen did dive to get the penalty, but that´s part of the game anyway, the ref saw what he was meant to see `the Dive of God`this time, eh? Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: alanabit Date: 07 Jun 02 - 03:06 PM God I hope England don't meet Argentina again! Those last twenty minutes were too much for my heart even once. I do not think that Michael Owen dived, but I was several thousand miles away, so I can't be sure. Neither can those who think he did be sure. However, the ref (and a very good ref at that) thought it was a foul. England deserved to win anyway and there need be no carping about it. |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: Big Tim Date: 07 Jun 02 - 03:51 PM Shane was born in England, Kent. He was taken back to the old home place near Puckaun, Tipp when he was six months old. James Connolly didn't see Ireland until he was 14, and spent less than half his life there. I love Connolly, but the best description I have seen of his is that by Kathleen Behan, the mother of all the Behans, "a wee fat man with a big moustache"! |

Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: Den Date: 09 Jun 02 - 05:56 PM Big Tim, I stand corrected...must have been selective memory. Is it just me or is Barry Davis the most biased commentator known to man. I'm referring to his commentry during the Italy game which was refereed by Englishman Graham Poll who I must add did a good job pity his assistant on the right: couldn't keep up with the play/new fuck all about the off-side rule. But did we need Davis to repeatedly inject England references into the game. OK its alright to make reference to Poll being English and as I said he did his job very well, as Poll usually does, now I know he's come in for a lot of critisism this past season but the guy's a pro. But we're treated to Davis' wittering about how well England is doing how they have improved while others, favourites have floundered. The guy just pisses me off. Sorry rant off. Den |

Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: Long Firm Freddie Date: 10 Jun 02 - 05:55 PM The rather good BBC site has unearthed this gem:

Sven Goran Eriksson's right-hand man has been entertaining the troops with his instrument.
Eriksson said: "He's already played for the staff. They were all singing.
"You must switch and have a laugh. Life is fun," he added. LFF |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: GUEST Date: 10 Jun 02 - 06:01 PM Nigel Parsons, Nicky Butt has often had superb, game defining performances for Man Utd. Never, (to my knowledge) have the tabloids (mis)used his name in their headlines. To be more facile and immature than the Sun / News of the World is quite an achievement! Well done Nigel! |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: Nigel Parsons Date: 11 Jun 02 - 04:49 AM Guest: (I rise to the bait) Was I 'facile', well, I have that 'facility' however, I just loaded the gun. But I don't think any scatological headline could have been worse than the headline used by the Daily Star. For those who manage to completely avoid the tabloids, (or are from different shores) The Daily Star (more a porn comic than a newspaper) headlined their story of England's football victory over Argentina with the word "Gotcha" which was a repeat of the Sun's headline on the sinking of the General Belgrano. This takes British 'jounalism' to a new all-time low! |

Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: Wolfgang Date: 12 Jun 02 - 11:57 AM Two goals is not a lot. But when I looked it up I was surprised how many teams have done that (come out successfully from the preliminary round with only two goals) before the English, among them Ireland, Northern Ireland and Wales. But the undisputed leader in this discipline (coming through with least goals and effort) is Italy. In 1982, they finished second in the preliminary round with no win and only two goals. In 1970, they even won their preliminary group with one single goal. They went on to win the final, later. Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: catspaw49 Date: 12 Jun 02 - 02:15 PM alanbit says...."I bet Argentina and France would swap places with either England or Ireland - or even the USA come to that." Yeah, I bet they would. And unless the US Team totally folds up, there are a lot of scenarios that will take them to the next round and only a few that won't. Any combination with a win or draw advances the US and one loss scenario will work as well, but the fate of the US team is in their own hands.....Win or draw against Poland and they move on and I'm dead nuts sure that that either France or Argentina would swap places with that! Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: Den Date: 12 Jun 02 - 04:22 PM That had to be the dullest match of the cup so far. Nigeria played there second string team and still played better football than England. The English team had better pull their socks up I'm sure that they will find the Danes much more up for the challenge and if they play the way they did against Sweden and Nigeria then I don't hold out much hope for them. I felt sorry for Argentina they play such attractive attacking football but Sweden were resolute at the back and strong on the counter. I also feel sorry for the S. Africans what a way to go out. Anyway bring on Spain. I will be in Atlanta on Sunday anyone been to the Fado pub. I hope to watch the Ireland game there on tape delay at 2:00 pm. Den |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: Nigel Parsons Date: 12 Jun 02 - 05:28 PM Den: I don't know where you hail from, but the English team were playing an 'early' game, rather than an evening game, in temperatures of about 98 degrees (I can't find the ASCII for the degrees symbol!). The chance to play a defensive match, relying on precision passing to avoid too much running would have been a deliberate choice; Particularly against a team from the Southern Hemisphere who would have been better acclimatised. Comments made by the commentators suggested that the players may need three days to re-hydrate as it is. Nigel. |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: beachcomber Date: 12 Jun 02 - 07:01 PM I'm glad that England have qualified too and what a meeting it would be were they both to make it through to the FINAL!! Naw Ireland could'nt go that far not with Nationwide League players waiting as back-up, could they? Some of those, they say, are not Irish either, imagine it. We'll be giving games to NON_IRISHMEN to play for the cause when we have dozens of true-blue (perhaps green) Paddy's just dying to pull on the colours back home (Well one anyway..whose name escapes me right now!) It is easy to see how people who refuse to accept non native born players as Irish have very little experience of or knowledge of emigration and how the children of emigrants are, very often, reared. beach |

Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: Bullfrog Jones Date: 15 Jun 02 - 02:44 PM Strangely enough, I don't think that England are playing to their potential yet. The great thing is that they are coming together as a team --- playing three games unchanged has given them a real unity, particularly defensively. Ferdinand and Campbell are beginning to look like the best central defensive partnership around, but they'd be really tested against Brazil. However, the Brazilian defence is notoriously suspect, and the speed of Owen and Heskey will hopefully give them real problems. With Beckham just getting back to his best (he didn't do that much against Denmark, but everything he did was crucial)and Butt and Scholes dominating the midfield, England have a real chance in what may turn out to be a classic goal-fest --- hopefully a case of "we're gonna score one more than you". Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: RolyH Date: 15 Jun 02 - 03:18 PM Another plus point from the world cup (other than the football)is that we have got our national flag back from the fascists. |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 15 Jun 02 - 04:44 PM St Georges Flag has more associations with the Church of England than with the right wing nuts, who for the most part have tended anyway to prefer the Union Jack.
Looking at the flood of English flags fluttering everywhere this week I found myself thanking God that it hasn't been Union Jacks everywhere. The St George's Flag is a simple and essentially modest flag. The Union Jack isn't. (Yeah, and I know officially it's "Union Flag" not "Union Jack", but Union Jack is what people call it, and that's the determining factor in such things, in my view.) |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: GUEST Date: 17 Jun 02 - 05:02 AM Come on Belgium! |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: C-flat Date: 17 Jun 02 - 11:41 AM I think we can do better than Belgium against Brazil. Their firepower is undeniable and Juninho(who was the finest player I've ever seen in a Middlesbrough shirt) has been outstanding, but they can be un-done defensively and the way England are playing I think we're sure to score at least once. All we've got to do is stop them scoring twice! Simple really. |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 17 Jun 02 - 12:27 PM If they can beat Brazil they can beat anyone. If. |
Subject: RE: BS: IN-GER-LAND! From: alanabit Date: 17 Jun 02 - 03:28 PM Can't argue with much of this. The history books say that Brazil will win easily, period. However, England's players can be cocky young sods who don't give a buggers about history. The defence looks better than it has done for years and really England have had some extraordinary luck - which is important. They have nine or ten first choice players available and they have now had a few games together. I agree that they could quite conceivably play better - and there would be no time better than on Friday. However, the hot midday temperatures will favour the experienced Brazilians, who are now clear favourites to lift the trophy. They have the firepower to win games without dominating them. The difference is, so do England this time around. The Brazilians should win, but England are unlikely ever to get a better chance against the world's greatest football nation. |
