I'm referring to his commentry during the Italy game which was refereed by Englishman Graham Poll who I must add did a good job pity his assistant on the right: couldn't keep up with the play/new fuck all about the off-side rule. But did we need Davis to repeatedly inject England references into the game. OK its alright to make reference to Poll being English and as I said he did his job very well, as Poll usually does, now I know he's come in for a lot of critisism this past season but the guy's a pro. But when I looked it up I was surprised how many teams have done that (come out successfully from the preliminary round with only two goals) before the English, among them Ireland, Northern Ireland and Wales. But the undisputed leader in this discipline (coming through with least goals and effort) is Italy. In 1982, they finished second in the preliminary round with no win and only two goals. The great thing is that they are coming together as a team --- playing three games unchanged has given them a real unity, particularly defensively. Ferdinand and Campbell are beginning to look like the best central defensive partnership around, but they'd be really tested against Brazil. However, the Brazilian defence is notoriously suspect, and the speed of Owen and Heskey will hopefully give them real problems. With Beckham just getting back to his best (he didn't do that much against Denmark, but everything he did was crucial)and Butt and Scholes dominating the midfield, England have a real chance in what may turn out to be a classic goal-fest --- hopefully a case of "we're gonna score one more than you". However, England's players can be cocky young sods who don't give a buggers about history. The defence looks better than it has done for years and really England have had some extraordinary luck - which is important. They have nine or ten first choice players available and they have now had a few games together. I agree that they could quite conceivably play better - and there would be no time better than on Friday. However, the hot midday temperatures will favour the experienced Brazilians, who are now clear favourites to lift the trophy. They have the firepower to win games without dominating them. The difference is, so do England this time around. The Brazilians should win, but England are unlikely ever to get a better chance against the world's greatest football nation. |
