Nothing racist about my previous remark, I was just referring to some beings that appeared on my doorstep last night out of a crack leading to the underworld. Whether they were Celts or not I have no way of knowing, though as they didnt have freckles and red hair they probably weren't American Hollywood Celts.

Yus - A naked Celtic battle wall, all waving thier fearsome weapons at the English.

It reminds me of the story of the Roman Legion marching into the Blaenau (tr Hills) Misty, dark, raining. Out of the mist a voice calls "One Welshman is worth 2 Romans" - The two nearest legionaires depart into the mist at a run. A fearsome clashing, a curdling scream or two then silence.

A voice calls out from the mist "One Welshman is worth 10 Romans" - 10 romans dash up the mountainside. Again a clash of arms, screams and then silence.

The voice calls out of the mist "One Welshman is worth a whole Centuary of Romans" The Legion commander details off a Centuary, the Centurian at the head, they march up the hill. As the mist closes in on them they see a figure sore wounded crawling down. " Carefull Centurian, it's a trap - Theres two of them out there !!"

When the ancient Celts, and especially those cool Druids sarted tuning their guitars in DADGAD, they paved the way for a couple of years of brilliantly innovative instrumental and vocal music.....AND twenty years of repetitive boring Celtoid albums.

First they added a Nigerian drummer to the band and made "Afro-celtoid" music.

Then came the Cape Breton fiddler: Afro-Mari-Celtoid.

The friggin' didgeridoo made it: Austro-Afro-Mari-Celtoid.

The conjunto accordionist made it Austro-Afro-Mari-Mexi-Celtoid.

Darn, I wish those Druids had played harps (diatonic ones)

The genetic point is interesting. Modern historical/archaelogical work seems to be tending more and more towards the "cultural diffusion" model, as opposed to old"big population movement/invasion", until post-Roman empire, say. This changes post 300AD, so it is currently supposed that the subsequent changes did indeed involve substantial population movement(Anglo-Saxons into England, Irish Gaels into Scotland, and probably Britons into Brittany, to quote the relevant ones here). The implication is that Ireland and Britain had a fairly stable genetic pool up to around 300AD, going back many thousand years.
Now, it is becoming established that are genetic differences observable between Wales, ireland and England, and between the West of England and the east. The interesting corollary to this is that as the AnglSaxons were coming from the Celtic heartland of Europe (genetically speaking) into an area with a substantially unchanged "old population" which had acquired Celtic cuture and language by a diffusion process. not by substantial invasions of people.
So the latest position, which seems quite well documented and becoming more so, is that genetically speaking the English are the ones with the "Celtic" genes, and the Irish and Welsh aren't. Funny, eh?

just did a little checking on the web - according to various sites the celts invented the handsaw, the rotary mill for grain, soap, iron rimmed wagon wheels, the greek gods (according to one page they all derived from celtic dieties) the Indian Civilization (suppossedly one branch of celts became the Hindu's); faster horses; the legend of the trojan war; the domestication of apples; the italian wine industry; Judiasm;

and of course that the original inhabitants of the Americas were Celts.

They also built stonehenge and taught the Egyptians how to build pyramids.

At least that's what various websites say - and we know they couldn't put it on the web if it weren't true?

I'll go for the technology above, plus the combine harvester- Adam H-D did that under the Romans, but he attributed it properly to the Gauls, I think. (I've seen it in a Pelican history of technology). I don't think the mythology has it quite right, but they went to Delphi, Turkey and Galicia, as well as upsetting some Roman geese. A number of the early church fathers were Gauls.

And if any re-enactors in Kent (Celtic name) want some early type domesticated apples, I know where there is one in the public domain.

This may or may not seem like a plus to you, it's hard to say. According to Will and Ariel Durant, the Irish invented soap; thought the Romans were dirty because they wouldn't use it. Me, I think I'd rather spend half the day in a nice calidarium and finish off with a massage and a nice stridgle.

"How The Irish Saved Civilization" by Thomas Cahill Click here. (Just love them blue clickies.) In this book the historian Thomas Cahill tells how the Irish saved civilization in the years following the decline and fall of the Roman Empire.

Some of my compatriots think he understates the case. They believe the Irish invented civilisation.

St Gall, I think it was, at any rate, one of the peripatetic Celtic Christians who reconverted Europe, was notable for being able to read without speaking the words, a hitherto unknown skill. And I have heard that it was the Irish monks who inventedwritingtextswithgapsbetweenwordsthusmakingthemmorereadable.

According to Clever Men and Women of Education the Mesolithic Peoples first settled Ireland at the Mouth of The River Bann . They decided to settle there when they saw the Vast Shoals of Atlantic SALMON arriving each late Winter heading up river to the the Great Lake NEAGH and its ten rivers System . The Indigenous Peoples all over the Watershed harvested this Bounty of The Great Spirit from then till the Year 1661 when an English King gave the Monoply of the Salmon Trade , and The River Bann , and LOUGH NEAGH all 102,790 acres of it to Reward the Military Services of a WARLORD by Royal Charter to the WARLORD's HEIR . The Crown also had earlier rewarded THE HONOURABLE THE IRISH SOCIETY with Fishing Previleges in the tidal portion of the River . These Royal Acts DELETED all IRISH Rights till DATE , the Indigenous Native Irish Fisher People being just mostly ignored and barely tolerated to harvest the Coarse Fish For FOOD and Subsistence Economy there after till date. That is NOW this YEAR 2002 . Seeing as This Is JUBILEE Year Might Not It Be A GOOD IDEA that one of YOU ENGLISH should suggest to your Queen to return LOUGH NEAGH and The River BANN back to THE IRISH PEOPLE seeing as ten generations of Grantees have reduced the Shoals to Remnant Numbers . You have only two months left to achieve this .

Sorry Guest,
I don't understand why you have posted this stupid (and if you think it is true just send your bank account number to them)letter from OBO as it has no relevance to the thread, but at least most Celts can write in proper english, thanks to the Scottish educational system.
Unfortuneately, due to the long English domination of these islands, very few of us now speak the celtic languages, in which some of the most exquisite songs and poems have been written, and translate awkwardly into English.
The music is our gift and continues to be heard across the globe.

Oy vey! is this a silly thread? or what? I'm stuck here on a Saturday night, archieving thousands of reeeely old "folk" music songs to MP3 files so's I can write them to a buncha CDs which take up less space, &C. What are the rest a youse up to. So belfast, did ya see that the SF bookstore has a new book about yer man?

sincerely yours,
Chuck E. Arlah
(yankwank)

I need another beer!

Jeanie West can't sing!

Joe Glazer sounds like he is singing for the masses and believes they are too dim to understand his words. Cisco Houston sounds as though he considered himself God's gift to women. Only Guthrie sounds like a real person, singing real songs.

Maybe a little rum would help.

Hey! Enough o' this doin' down Scottish inventors!Mr Belfast---the man who built and rode the first bicycle just happens to be my Great-great uncle, Kirkpatrick MacMillan [long deceased] . He built his bike in the smiddy at Kier , near Dunscore, in Dumfries-shire, and rode it all the way to Glesca, where he was fined for colliding wi' a young lassie. There is a bike displayed in the museum by [Constable's ] Flatford Mill, which is claimed to be K.MacM's original---though I cannae vouch for the authenticity o' that.
