Seulement quelques exemples :

The Avengers. "Chapeau melon et bottes de cuir" in France.

British sense of humour.

Some of my favourite beers.

"Filer à l'anglaise" (Never understood why you say: to take the French leave)

Agatha Christie et mes séries policières préférées…(Couldn't find the words in English)

The Beatles and pop music innovations.

English country dances and my favourite traditional music after Scottish one.

Keeping France in the victory camp after WWII. Thank you Winston Churchill.
(By the way, a thought for all the Tommies who gave their lives for our freedom during WWI and WWII). Thank you Winston Churchill.

I was about to mention Catherine Zeta-Jones but she's Welsh, isn't she?

What is wrong now :

Quite a lot naval defeats! Thanks you Lord Nelson!

Guillotine concept.

The destruction of Le Havre my hometown in september1944 (about 2000 civilians killed).
The slaughter of French sailors at Mers-el –Kebir. My father-in-law was on board the Strasbourg.

What French Canadians call "le grand derangement".

Hooligans (sorry, we have ours, just see a football match between Paris and Marseilles).

Driving on the wrong side of the road (well I'm kidding).

Killed Joan of Arc and transported Napoleon. In fact, I fear people feel more interested by the Corsican ogre in England than in France.

Télétubbies (the French name?)

Mrs Thatcher.

Pourquoi autant d'endroits en Angleterre portent-ils des noms de défaites : Trafalgar Square, Waterloo station… ? (It's only a joke)

Merci Laurent,

Thank you for you kind comment re WW1 and WW11. My father was part of the D Day landings and fought in the battle for Normandy so I have always felt a special link with your part of France. Thanks should also go to all the other Allied Nations who contributed and are almost all represented on Mudcat.I have visited the region many times and know the Houlgate area well.

Ever since I came to know of the Battles in Normandy, I have held a sadness over the loss of life of the inocent civilians in towns such as Le Havre, Caen, and St Malo. Being from a seafairing town, Hull, the sad loss of so many French Sailors has a special resonance that only those from seafairing comunities such as ours will understand.

We in Hull also lost thousands of civilians during the War, to Air raids, but at least we could directly blame "the enemy", how hard it must be to know that the shells and bombs raining down on your town come from your allies! They were times of difficult decissions by the people charged with keeping the world free, and inevetably, some of those decisions were wrong.

So once again, thank you for your kind words, please keep making lots of Calvados and fine fine cheese in Normandy, it is 10 years since my last visit and I long to return!

2 small corrections:

The calculus that is actually used came from Germany (Leibnitz).
I'm almost certain cinematography was developed in France.

Modern calculus notation is a stranger mixture of Newton's and Leibnitz' originals.

Didn't les frès Lumière invent the movie -- before the ciné camera had been dreamt up? Impressive, even to cet anglais! (Lumière, mais pas de Son!)

There will always be claims and counterclaims as to who invented what, but while Baird made the first usable TV system, it was Marconi who invented TV as we know it - Baird's system had 35 lines, while Marconi's had 405 lines which gave better resolution (and cameras which could move). Newton and Liebnitz independently conceived the techniques we now know as calculus, but Newton published first (just as Swan was beaten by hours by Edison when it came to patenting the light bulb, and Wellington won the battle of Waterloo with a little help from Blucher - not to mention a few thousand troops, some of whom came back). I'm fed up of hearing about the sad things that happened in the war, including the bits where my dad got shot in the Black Forest and my Uncle Bert was lost at Dunkirque. C'est la guerre, n'est ce pas?

An englishman and his wife were on holiday in France. Unfortunately his wife was killed in a road accident, and to save money he decided to have her buried in the local cemetary. As he was on holiday he did not have suitable funereal attire, so decided to splash out on a black hat for the funeral ceremony. Fancying himself as a linguist, he asked the receptionist at his hotel where he might purchase, un capot noir. The receptionist looking puzzled directed him to the chemist shop. The conversation in the shop went as follows. Bonjour Monsieur, avez vous un capot noir? Un capot noir Monsieur, pourquoi vous aime un capot noir. Par ce que ma femme et mort!..... Ah les Anglais, quel finesse!!

It is the apparent random allocation of gender to nouns that stops me from being as fluent in French (or Greek for that matter)as I would like to be.
Imagine if English used genders:
Ziploc bags: male- because they hold everything in but you can always see right through them.
Swiss Army Knife:male- because even though it appears useful for a wide variety of work, it spends most of its time just opening bottles.
Kidneys:female- because they always go to the bathroom in pairs.
Shoe: male- because it is usually unpolished with its tongue hanging out.
Copier: female- because once turned off, it takes a while to warm up. It is an effective reproductive device when the right buttons are pushed but can wreak havoc when the wrong buttons are pushed.
Tyre: male- because it goes bald and often is over-inflated.
Sponge:female- soft, squeezable and retain water.
Web page:female because it is always getting hit on.
Underground (Subway):male- because it uses the same old lines to pick up.
Hourglass:female- because over time the weight shifts to the bottom.
Hammer:male- because it hasn't evolved much in the last 5,000 years but it's handy to have around.
Remote control:female- you thought it would be male but consider: it gives man pleasure, he'd be lost without it and while he doesn't always know the right buttons to push, he keeps trying.

Slinks off having offended everyone.

Well, the English made...Engliqh, which allowed Mark TWAN, a famous american to write some of the best pages about the possibilities of not understanding each other between the french speaking community and the english speaking one. Look into "Roughing it", where there is this aller-retour between français and English.

Automatic translators are even funnier at times...
