Subject: RE: Getaway 2005 (14-17 Oct ) From: George Papavgeris Date: 22 Feb 05 - 01:23 PM Giok, if you're only going for the Getaway weekend, then I suggest you avoid the hassle of renting/driving a car, and get a lift from someone, as Nancy King suggested (she gave me a lift last year, but she was but one of several who offered). Looks like we'll meet at last! I plan to come over with Vanessa for a week, spending a few days sightseeing and/or seeing friends before/after the Getaway. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2005 (14-17 Oct ) From: John MacKenzie Date: 22 Feb 05 - 11:49 AM Yep I've now found a flight to BWI, and as it's via Iceland I'm trying to meet up with Skarpi en-route. I shall hire a car at BWI, prices look a bit up on last time I rented in the US, still looking for a good deal so any hints or tips appreciated. Giok |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2005 (14-17 Oct ) From: Amos Date: 22 Feb 05 - 10:45 AM I wondered what Alaska Mike had been smoking, and now it's plain. Accounts for all those great songs. A |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2005 (14-17 Oct ) From: Nancy King Date: 22 Feb 05 - 10:37 AM Actually, BWI (Baltimore) is by far the closest airport to the camp, and there will be lots of people passing by who could pick you up. Any chance you could fly into BWI, Giok? I wouldn't wish the drive from JFK on anyone! Nancy |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2005 (14-17 Oct ) From: Amos Date: 22 Feb 05 - 08:48 AM You could also fly to D.C. instead. A |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2005 (14-17 Oct ) From: Charlie Baum Date: 21 Feb 05 - 11:34 PM PS to Giok-- Oh yeah, you're going to need LOTS of American cash to pay all the tolls on that stretch of road, either that or a transponder for EZ-Pass (an automated toll-collection system)--close to $20 worth. --Charlie Baum |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2005 (14-17 Oct ) From: Charlie Baum Date: 21 Feb 05 - 11:32 PM Giok-- The drive from JFK airport in New York to the Getaway could conceivably take 3-1/2 to 4 hours IF it were smooth and there's no traffic. HAH! Plan on something closer to 5 hours, since we're talking reality here. You'll need to get out of the airport and follow the Belt Parkway aorund the shore of Brooklyn (and past Coney Island) to the Verrazano Bridge, cross Staten Island (that first stretch is the part of the trip that takes an incalculable amount of time, since it's so traffic-dependent), enter the New Jersey Turnpike and take it to its Southern Terminus (90 minutes), cross the entire state of Delaware (about 15 minutes) and proceed through Northeastern Maryland to Camp Rablewood (another half hour or so). --Charlie Baum (More specific route numbers and directions available upon request.) |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2005 (14-17 Oct ) From: wysiwyg Date: 21 Feb 05 - 06:41 PM Oh, pretty.... look... According to Shawlmaster MMario, 50% will go to the Mudcat, and 50% will go to the FSGW scholarship fund. AND you will be able to arrive at the Getaway in style! ~S~ |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2005 (14-17 Oct ) From: Dani Date: 21 Feb 05 - 05:22 PM Mike SMOKED that salmon?! You going to tell me he CAUGHT it, too!? God, that was one of the most delicious things I've ever tasted. I actually think the camp does a pretty good job with food, but it was pretty sad that they had salmon on the menu after we had tasted Mike's. Dani (who is thinking about all the treats to come) |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2005 (14-17 Oct ) From: Ferrara Date: 20 Feb 05 - 10:39 PM Amos, the only secret delicacies are the ones at the Friday potluck. When I'm lucky, Sinsull brings Italian Cannoli -- and when I'm really lucky, I get there early enough to grab one. Other treats appear on the potluck table all evening. Lynn Title's fudge cake is another example that comes to mind, not to mention Alaska Mike's home-smoked salmon which (sob) will not be there this year unless he can somehow air-mail it. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2005 (14-17 Oct ) From: Amos Date: 20 Feb 05 - 09:58 PM My o my o my.... Mick, I can't just stand by and watch you take a fall for the team. It's not right, is what!! Unless of course there is a secret delicacy to the event and its not as bad as it is being made out as. Then you should treat it as just desserts. An all-over Olive Oil Skin Rub or something special like that, you know... A |

I think we better form the wagons into a circle, and break out the Remington repeaters boys. BTW, how long is the drive from JFK to the scene of the debacle? Giok |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2005 (14-17 Oct ) From: SINSULL Date: 13 Feb 05 - 09:23 PM Stephen - banjos are your only salvation. We can buy our own chocolate and champagne, even our own jewelry. And with the proper size batteries, well...But a banjo player complete with drool - SIGH...Why do you think Kendall dusted his off after so many years? It works better than holy water and a crucifix. Now think hard - do you really want us to abandon our harmless games and go to the Getaway just to sing? Your choice, guys. I will dissuade all the the ladies if that is your wish. SINS who believes that Mick doth protest too much. And by the way, I am half German and only a fraction Irish/English/Scottish. The best of the mischief comes from the Irish. |
