I don't remember that church building, but it is part of the church history that the arsonists were found and racism was the motive. I am also aware that shortly before I came to Pittsburgh, Penn. in 1969 3 African American churches were set on fire, and one as a result was totally destroyed because of a racist arsonist. This said, I don't want my first post to this thread to be interpreted that I am so naive that I don't believe such things happen in the USA {and elsewhere}. However, I would like to know if any facts are known about these Tennessee fires that directly connect them to the KKK and/or racism. |

Havin' lived most of my llfe in the South I know there is a segment of white folks who are about as hatefull, igorant and backward as anyone's wildest imagination... I lived with them. I haven't, to my knowledge, known any actual KKK members. But a couple of years ago an acquaintance at a camera club was mentioning that he hadn't been able to find a copy or rental of "Birth of a Nation" available. I just thought he was interested in it as a singular historic film. Then he made it increasingly clear that he appreciated it for its inspiring message. He went on to say that he felt the KKK started as a very good thing, but admitted that it had at times gone a little too far. I "lost it", and departed from the level of civil discourse. Sad as it is to see homes and churches burned, it would be almost a relief if this turned out to be an isolated, mentally ill person. But the odds are so good that Bobert's first assumption was right as to the nature of the case, whether or not it was literally Klan work. |

There were also some spinoff groups that were even worse. The Klan still exists. For some reason I can't fathom there are people who must, absolutely MUST, feel superior in some way: by race, by religion, by knowledge, by political party, by something. Me, I've learned that I'm so butt-naked ignorant that I can learn from 'most anyone. |

Not that it makes what happened any better, but hopefully it will turn out to be criminal activity and not a hate crime. Some years ago, the teenage boy of a gal I grew up with in Oklahoma decided to become a "skinhead." She was at the end of her rope with him, & ready to let the cops take him. Now, according to research done in OK, @ 50 % of Okies are of "Indian" ancestry. Now, this youngin is one whom I held as a baby, diapered, & his mother instructed him to call me "aunt." So when I visited, I sat this boy (then 16)down, & had a chat with him. I told him about how his father's family is Cherokee. I told him about the trail of tears. About how I am Choctaw & Cherokee & some of my family was hated by their own relatives. I told him about how there were many people who were prejudiced against my relatives, Indian & Irish, how in my lifetime there were signs in shop windows that said "Help Wanted--No Irish Need Apply!" (Also @50% of Okies are of Irish ancestry, & some of us are in both groups!) He never associated with those skinheads again. If we who "rock the babies" in this world would take seriously our roles as parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc. from the time they are little ones, we could really change this world. One child at a time. I read research recently that the average midwestern American "white" person has some DNA which is "black." I sure would like to be a fly on the wall & watch some of the hatefilled humans be informed of the interesting ancestry in their genes. |

Comes with the Internet territory. There are, however, a few that are coming in here now and they say they represent something legitimate and even though myself and others tried to make it quite clear we knew who this Group was, this person, that still posts here and freely admits they belong to this organisation, underhandedly have, on several occasions, manipulated Racially charged Hate Posts to Flame up on certain thread topics ( it is pretty slick how it's done though if you can't see it for what it is but after many Years of dealing with Victim's of Hate crimes...this is one Mudcatter that can) The member of this particular Group (just as Bobert says about Byrd) is " trying to sanitize either the Klan or his association with the Klan because it's just that.... a falsehood..." Now this person is a Member here now or posts as a Guest with their name attached (unlike this member, but then I guess this person would be delighted to get the kind of sick email I did) and this person when being challenged one day a while back even stated that they got lots PMs of support from others here which encouraged him a lot.. ain't that just great! That was it really for me... I mean why even bother then to attempt to draw attention to the covert message this person is putting out! The organisation this person belongs to has opened their doors to visiting KKK members when they Visited the UK in the past. They even still have Buddies in other Hate Groups in the US! Now this group, after years of what can only be described as violent, sick rhetoric and horrible actions are attempting to fool People into thinking their aim is not to provoke violence and instill hate towards people who, to put it bluntly just ain't white. There will always be People that are desperate enough to believe that the color of a person's skin or the shape of their eyes or their Religion is the cause of their own personal problems.
